What's your irrational phobia?

Oil rigs & wind turbines for me 😬 what's yours?

Another one of mine. Not a phobia as such more a fear, but being chased upstairs really freaks me out. I think this stems from childhood though when my brother used to do it when we were messing about

Blood and tight things around parts of my body. Such as getting blood pressure taken or when people tie hair bands round tier fingers. Probably not as irrational but makes me feel awfully sick.

Peckhaminn · 30/01/2023 00:09

Worms, I also HATE worms. Every time I see one I think of tape worms living inside of me

Peckhaminn · 30/01/2023 00:12

Washing when it's been dried but it's too dry and when you touch it, it squeaks between your fingers. My tongue sticks out, I gag and I can't cope. Another is scraping your teeth by accident. Awful

@XenoBitch it was an error on the nurses part. She was utterly terrified which made it worse!

@gkkp no pain but the cubicle was a blood bath!

I'm struggling to see how on earth this happened??

faultythighs · 30/01/2023 00:41

Wool, it makes me shudder. I can't touch it and look at it.

WisteriaLodge · 30/01/2023 00:45

Empty swimming pools here, the bit that slopes off to the deep end, I can't look it give me the creeps so much. Sharks are another one, especially Bull sharks, they're the most aggressive out of all them, I read somewhere that they can swim from the sea into freshwater too, that frightened the crap out of me thinking they could be in a river somewhere while you're sat having a nice picnic. Luckily we don't have any Bull sharks here in Sussex

ukholidayseeker · 30/01/2023 00:48

Bananas.

Sharks in a swimming pool

Get rid of your washing up bowl. It will be life-changing

But then I’d be afraid of the bits in the bottom of the sink 😂

TheBirdintheCave · 30/01/2023 07:54

@Chardonnay73 @LokiCokey @WisteriaLodge Omg I thought I was the only one! 😱 Does the fear extend to empty shops too for you? They also give me the creeps 😵

LokiCokey · 30/01/2023 08:51

@TheBirdintheCave pretty much abandoned anything... why do they always leave bits behind?!

TheBirdintheCave · 30/01/2023 09:18

@LokiCokey For me I think it's mainly about empty cavernous indoor spaces.

No I'm fine with empty shops, not that I've been in many!

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 30/01/2023 10:08

Claustrophobia and spiders. And more recently - the thought of not being able to breathe. I had Covid recently and it really affected me; since then what was a passing musing has become a fixation I’m working hard to get round.

DRS1970 · 30/01/2023 10:19

Spiders.

Deadringer · 30/01/2023 10:25

Things falling, and me falling off things. I am nervous on a balcony for instance, in case in collapses, and I won't go near the edge of piers or cliffs. I also get nervous that the ceiling will fall in on top of me, no idea why, especially if I can hear someone walking around above me.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/01/2023 10:54

The mere thought of potholing. I’m not sure that’s at all irrational, though.

I have been potholing, and I got stuck. Never ever ever again.

I had to google this (I know it as spelunking), it sounded like a lewd act!

EldersOfTheInternet · 30/01/2023 11:36

Level crossings, for a year I had to walk over one 5 days a week, can't step on the track bit even though I know they're not electrified and the fear of being hit. I hate absolutely hate electric shocks and I've had quite a few in my life. Even now I have a fear that a car or bus I'm in will break down on the level crossing or mistime and get stuck in traffic on it 😳

Twizbe · 30/01/2023 11:37

Cable cars! I hate the fucking things.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/01/2023 11:38

I was extra-traumatised (potholing) after reading of an incident some years ago where a young boy ended up trapped on a ledge at the end of a water-filled channel the leaders didn’t even know was there.

They did get him out eventually but it was a very close call. The poor kid must have been terrified.

PointersPlease · 30/01/2023 11:45

Im amazed to hear my dislike of machinery and water has a name! Submechophobia!
I also loathe water wheels like a poster above

Fluffnotscruffy · 30/01/2023 12:03

Marine life, particularly fish, octopus, jelly fish, lobsters , sharks, whales.
Snorkelling would be my worst nightmare. Even seeing a fish bowl with a small gold fish in it makes me sweaty, anxious and nauseous.

I do not eat fish and struggle when others are eating fish in my company.

I made myself visit the Boston Aquarium convincing myself they are in tanks and can’t touch me, I coped ok with it until I got this overwhelming fear that the large central tank in the middle was going to burst, I started hyperventilating and had to leave.

I rarely get into the sea as a result.
