Oil rigs & wind turbines for me 😬 what's yours?

I have a phobia of coral. Luckily not something that I need to deal with very often!
I've tried numerous times to swim near it, and I end up having a panic attack and becoming a jibbering wreck.

These are linked to my no 1 phobia - submechanophobia. Fear of submerged or partially submerged man-made objects under water. It's paralysing for me if I'm near anything that's under water, extra points if it's metal. I just watched The Rig as well, and all I could think about is how terrifying it would be to be on one of those.

They're also related to my second biggest phobia - megalophobia. Fear of unnaturally large objects. I can just about look at a wind turbine from afar but I would faint if I was ever taken near one (and then faint again when I pass out and fall into the water next to them) Grin I'm also terrified of water wheels 😅

Moths 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

WeWereInParis · 29/01/2023 20:46

Vomit is a big one that affects me day to day.

One that obviously has no impact day to day is whales. I cannot look if they appear on tv (like on the news or in a film or something). I don't know why, they just give me the willies. Urgh.

Not really a phobia but I have an irrational fear of opening the front door and someone throwing acid in my face.

No idea where it’s come from but I have opening the door when I’m not expecting anyone!

There've been a few attacks covered in the media

Not really a phobia but I really get the shivers thinking about big underwater machinery like pumps in reservoirs, turbines, or shipwrecks

Oh that's a phobia, it's mine! Grin

I can not stand to see cruise ships. If I am on a beach, and can see one out at sea... I feel sick and I can't look at them. Makes me feel really uneasy. They are just too big. I will never be going on cruise!

There's a name for that - submechanophobia, I think. I have a touch of that too. Being a diver doesn't really help!

PragmaticWench · 29/01/2023 20:57

Swimming pool changing room floors, when they're wet. I feel horrific writing this, feel sick, my hands are shaking, toes curling up and soles of my feet are tingling.

It's visceral, fight or flight.

Pudmyboy · 29/01/2023 20:59

Earwigs, hate hate hate the pinchy bastards. Tried to rehabilitate them to myself as they are good parents, rare in the insect world, but it didn't work, I hate them and cannot let it go, I have to kill them even if they are outside in their own environment. And by kill I mean pulverise. I just hate them, they scare me so much!!!

Eranzer · 29/01/2023 21:03

I have a phobia of handbrake being loose too like a pp said!

I've a fear of polystyrene foam. I shudder when I think about it and cannot touch the stuff. Just the sound of it rubbing together turns my stomach

doodlepoodlenoodle · 29/01/2023 21:04

Octopus 🐙 I cannot stand them, just thinking off them makes me panicky and stressed 😩 xx

PinkPondQueen · 29/01/2023 21:04

Sponge. I physically cannot touch one. Even looking at one makes me feel funny.

Get rid of your washing up bowl. It will be life-changing

Escalators.
i totally freeze and feel like I can’t move. Heart rate goes up and I panic

Same here. Other than short escalators, I can't do them and always look for stairs or lifts instead.

My ultimate nightmare is the lifts being out of service at Gatwick North Terminal airbridge or Heathrow Terminal 5.

pleasestoprainingplease · 29/01/2023 21:10

Anything that flies, moths, butterflies and pigeons absolutely terrify me. I feel such a donut but I don't care. They've had me in tears. Maybe I'll get therapy one day for it.

SecretPeston · 29/01/2023 21:12

Railway tracks especially when they hiss and crackle when there's no train for miles.

Level crossings - often go out of my way to avoid them.

Freight trains.

Someone else like me! I thought no one else had a banana phobia

Bastard wind turbines for me too, no one else gets it!

Instantly spoil a nice drive with a hulking, malevolent turbine just standing there, slowly spinning.
Fuck, that's given me the chills just typing that out.

ODFOx · 29/01/2023 21:17

I am irrationally afraid of spiders.
The sound of whistling nauseates me.

AddictedToBooks · 29/01/2023 21:22

Statues, pylons, church spires and factory chimneys. I have no idea why and it's not even as though I'm afraid of heights. I'm also afraid of nuns after seeing an oil painting of a very angry looking nun when I was small

PrayForMyBum · 29/01/2023 21:24

Jewellery. Especially chain necklaces. But I can’t touch any of the stuff and I don’t want to see you fiddling with it either.

peskygrout · 29/01/2023 21:27

Driving over plastic bags. I'm absolutely convinced that they'll get caught up on the stuff on the underside of my car and cause an explosion.

I don't know if this is even possible but it gives me so much anxiety 😅

Also, people grabbing my ankles. I think it stems from my brother doing it through the spindles of my parents staircase as I ran upstairs a couple of times.
