Driving.

Mushrooms in grass and on trees they give me the heebie geebies, I eat them fine, mannequins in historical buildings hate them . Urgh

bigcheesematrix · 29/01/2023 21:29

Sharks. Whenever I go abroad I google to see if there are sharks in that sea. Even though I don't really swim in the sea. I get scared when my dh takes my dd snorkelling out of their depth. Even though the country we're in has had one known shark attack in 1975 for example.
Think it's from watching Jaws when I was about 10.

xprincessxjanetx · 29/01/2023 21:29

Moths. Not the tiny ones but the big ones.

They're also related to my second biggest phobia - megalophobia. Fear of unnaturally large objects. I can just about look at a wind turbine from afar but I would faint if I was ever taken near one (and then faint again when I pass out and fall into the water next to them) Grin I'm also terrified of water wheels 😅

I can not stand to see cruise ships. If I am on a beach, and can see one out at sea... I feel sick and I can't look at them. Makes me feel really uneasy. They are just too big. I will never be going on cruise!

Wow! I'm so glad I've read this. I didn't know a fear of cruise ships were a thing.

My in laws go on numerous cruises a year and are desperate for us to come along with the kids but even looking at a cruise ship makes me want to physically vomit.

I once saw a video of Disney cruise ships and they were 'tooting' their horns at one another. They both played music with the horns. If I remember right it was 'when you wish upon a star' and it was the most traumatic experience listening to it. I've never gotten over that video!

Vomit is a big one that affects me day to day.

One that obviously has no impact day to day is whales. I cannot look if they appear on tv (like on the news or in a film or something). I don't know why, they just give me the willies. Urgh.

Do they give you the Free Willys...? I'll get my coat....

🤣

Unsurprisingly, I’ve never seen that film. I wouldn’t be able to watch it at all.

WalterWitty · 29/01/2023 21:38

@Eranzer YES! Just read through waiting for someone to say polystyrene 🤢 even just thinking about it makes my mouth full with Saliva like I want to vom, makes me hot and gives me goosebumps. Vile vile vile!

it’s actually a true phobia, styrophobia

MsFrog · 29/01/2023 21:45

We have a small window in the roof above our landing, and when I go upstairs at night I have this fear that someone will be there looking down at me. It's in the second floor roof, so pretty irrational, and why would anyone climb on the roof just to look in at me going up to bed? But it gives me the shivers.

Also, I can't look in a mirror in the dark, too scared I'll see someone else in there behind me!

Another emetophobe here. However, I've recently had hypnotherapy (I've been like this for 25+ years) and this weekend I've had to deal with my 6yr old twins both having a sickness bug. And I feel such relief, it was the first time I have coped without having panic attacks!

Could I ask how you coped with pregnancy and birth please? I have the same phobia and am scared of these things making me sick.

Ah, you’ve reminded me of an other one - fog horns. The sound and sight of them.

WeWereInParis · 29/01/2023 21:51

@belimoo I know you didn't ask me, but I have the same phobia. I had anti sickness tablets throughout pregnancy with both my DDs, but still mentally coped very badly during the first trimester. I pretty much had a breakdown both times and didn't leave the house between about weeks 5 and 12. In labour with DD2 I was induced and I insisted on anti sickness injections.
So, I did not cope well. But I still had two! No more though.

I love that last one Grin

HappyBinosaur · 29/01/2023 21:56

Death. It’s an actual phobia, I’ve had cbt and emdr with a clinical psychologist which has helped a bit but it’s still very debilitating.
I can sort of dissociate myself from the phobia on a day to day basis to cope but if I actually allow myself to think about it I will have a panic attack or even faint 😞

jackstini · 29/01/2023 21:56

submechanophobia - would this include panic about lock mechanisms and dams, reservoirs etc? Terrifying

@belimoo - google fear free childbirth with Alexia Leachman- life changing!

Ginger1982 · 29/01/2023 21:57

Trucks with no trailers.

Rats. That tail, its feet - shudder.

Another one, is the sight of one of the Kardashian sister names. There is something about the spelling of it that makes me feel nauseous, and saying it also has the same effect.

dudsville · 29/01/2023 22:04

I don't have any phobias, but I'm extremely risk averse. I pay attention to everything I do. You'd think I'd learned a hard lesson that taught me to be careful, but no, it's entirely neurotic.

TheBirdintheCave · 29/01/2023 22:09

Empty swimming pools, particularly indoor ones. No idea why.

SwankyPants · 29/01/2023 22:12

skingraft · 29/01/2023 22:12

Spiders absolutely petrified, want to do that course at London zoo but it’s expensive. I feel frightened even looking at pictures.

I also strongly dislike holes (eg crumpets) but that’s more in a grossed-out way than frightened

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 29/01/2023 22:12

Dead birds. They fly into the windows in the spring and break their necks and I start sobbing and shaking at the thought of picking the body up. It's completely pathetic. They are dead, they can't hurt me.
