What do you do with Gu ramekins?

We've recently had 6 Gu puddings (what luxury 😁) and I've diligently washed the ramekins but I don't know what to do with them now.

Seems a waste just to recycle them but not sure what we could use them for...

I always just recycle them. Years and years ago I used to keep them and they just sat in the cupboard taking up space. whatever fantasies I told myself about repurposing them never actually got close to happening.

How useful can they really be if you have to try and think of uses for them or aren't getting much use from them. Small storage pots and tealight holders etc are hardly life changing or expensive to procure in the first place. The biggest money saving would be in not buying GU pods in the first place- they're so expensive!

I can't believe people give these to charity shops thinking they are doing them a favour.

fairtrauchled · 22/01/2023 12:13

I gave a load to a colleague who decorated them and used them as tea light holders for her wedding

Giggorata · 22/01/2023 12:14

With the wooden lids they're good for incense mixes, if you make your own.
Tea strainer or tea bag holder
Plus paints, sauces, dipping oil, etc.
I have one of those drink dispensers with a tap, containing hand sanitiser, by the back door (from covid) and use one for drips.
I’m considering gluing a load of them together to make a glass wall in my garden.

Genius idea for the messy pepper/salt grinders!

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 22/01/2023 12:17

We use them for jellies, angel delight, etc even use one to measure my washing powder.

Gwenhwyfar · 22/01/2023 12:17

Used teabags

Oh you better believe it. At least Gu glass pots are (mostly) washed and clean before the generous donor drops them off. Same can't be said for the other regular delights like chipped mugs, headless dolls, completed puzzle books, food stained cookbooks, odd shoes...

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 22/01/2023 12:28

Of course as soon as you do recycle the buggers, you will require some small pots for sauces, pickles and nuts.

OldTinHat · 22/01/2023 12:29

My DM used one to soak her finger which had a massive boil on it, in. With bicarb of course...!

gogohmm · 22/01/2023 12:30

Recycle, we have a decent stock already Blush

coffee I manage a charity shop and we get inundated with them .. I've never known anyone actually want to buy them Grin.

If I was buying them, I'd like them to still be full of pudding!

If you want well fitting lids, here's your answer.

LadyWithLapdog · 22/01/2023 12:44

Right, on the Pringles lid situation. I’ve just made ganache, as inspired by a post above. I used 2 ramekins. On one, the Pringles lid fits very well, you can take it by the lid and move it about. On the other, it doesn’t, it’s a big loose. Looking at the ramekins, they are a bit different. So I suspect one is the GU brand and one is a similar looking copy. Mystery solved (though I don’t know which is which).

Pouit · 22/01/2023 12:47

Recycle them. Would you feel bad about recycling wine bottles?
Glass can be recycled over and over. On the other hand, ceramics are a problem as they just go to landfill.

Mouldyfoodhelp · 22/01/2023 13:15

As condiment dishes for Nachos! Salsa, sour cream etc

SmudgeButt · 22/01/2023 13:54

amberedover · 22/01/2023 09:52

Or if you're lazy like me....empty a tin of sweetened condensed milk into a bowl, add lemon juice (try 1 lemon's worth) and stir. it should thicken but if it doesn't add more lemon juice.

Oh damn you @SmudgeButt for reminding me of this calorific emergency pud!

It's a pleasure knowing I've been of service and possibly helped someone else achieve my massive circumference sylph like boyish figure.

IntentionalError · 22/01/2023 13:59

I used to diligently wash them & keep them because they might be useful for something. When it got to the point that we had 30+ of the things cluttering up the cupboards I gave in & chucked them all in the recycling bin. They are just packaging at the end of the day, no different from a jam jar.

I eat the actual Gu, then fill the pot with chocolate angle delight. My DC are still young enough to spot this blatant fake.

Growing up in the 1970s, we had family friends who had no children and didn't know about kiddy convenience foods. When they came for a meal, DM used to make Angel Delight with single cream, and serve it in champagne glasses with whipped cream and crumbled Flake, then take all the credit for spending the morning slaving over melted chocolate and gelatine.

Badbudgeter · 22/01/2023 09:36

Who would buy them?

Someone with a drawer full of Pringle lids they're looking for a use for?

primeoflife · 22/01/2023 14:21

Limer · 22/01/2023 08:54

I stand my salt & pepper mills in them, so the cupboard/table doesn't get covered in salt/pepper dust.

We do this too!!

primeoflife · 22/01/2023 14:24

BeyondMyWits · 22/01/2023 09:39

I don't buy them any more. Felt guilty that I couldn't use them all. Felt guilty at adding to the recycling heap.

Life's too short to feel guilty about pudding, pudding should be a joy... so we choose other stuff now.

But glass is one of the best things to recycle, far better than plastic which often doesn't get recycled due to being the wrong kind or contaminated at sorting.

Buy and enjoy (but only when on offer as they are so expensive!!!)

primeoflife · 22/01/2023 14:27

nuttymut · 22/01/2023 10:44

My friends daughter uses them to make candles in.
as for the comments about charity shops taking them . I volunteer in a charity shop and no , they don’t sell and get chucked in the recycling which they have to pay for .
Ive been astounded at the stuff people drop off . Dirty, bobbly, scruffy. Poor condition.

That's interesting as our local charity shop has asked for clothes that may be bobbly etc as they then get money for rags. We had planned to get them recycled at the tip but they wanted them!!

And if they said "Oh that is delicious, you must give me the recipe" she'd have to bluff "Oh , I'm dreadful with recipes , I just wing it with the cream and chocolate till it looks right " Grin

Extratoebeans · 22/01/2023 14:36

I have multiple of these. I use one for tea bags, then get a clean one out while the other is in the dishwasher. One DD hates beans touching her other food, it's handy to put the beans in on her plate. Sometimes I put sauces in them. Also cat has a green bean obsession, so I put them in one to cool.
DH discovered they make good egg holders for in the ninja. I just keep them stacked in the cupboard for when I need them. But if you don't think you will use them recycle them.

Gu ones actually say Gu on the side Hi

inspired by this thread DH and I went out specifically to buy angel delight and I've filled 4 with that.

then DD used another to mix a 'potion '
