What do you do with Gu ramekins?

ChimChimeny · 22/01/2023 08:02

We've recently had 6 Gu puddings (what luxury 😁) and I've diligently washed the ramekins but I don't know what to do with them now.

Seems a waste just to recycle them but not sure what we could use them for...

I use them to collect used tea bags.

Neighbours87 · 22/01/2023 08:39

Lots of things. I use them to serve accompanying sauces such as cranberry, mint and tarter. Used tea bags when making a cup l. Also used them when preparing ingredients for cooking, such as chopped chili or ginger

SisterNancy · 22/01/2023 08:39

Grow mustard or cress in them on the windowsill

Hobbesmanc · 22/01/2023 08:40

I loved the ceramic ones in different shades of pastels. Pots and Co I think. But our Sainsbury's doesn't seem to stock them anymore. The GU desserts aren't as nice. We find them either sickly or the ones with cheesecake bases are a bit dry and Sandy. I'm a bonne Maman person now. The salted caramel and the pear and chocolate are lush

No one wants the glass ramekins. They just get recycled.

TravellingSpoon · 22/01/2023 08:40

I take them to work and use them as glue and paint pots.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 22/01/2023 08:40

I bake eggs in them for breakfast. Bit of oil, crack the egg in. 15 minutes in the oven, like the diet version of a fried egg.

TakeABite · 22/01/2023 08:06

you can a buy wooden lids for these now so you can use them and keep things sealed. God knows what.

I have one full of hair bands on my dresser.
A couple on rotation in the kitchen as spoon rests, and the others get recycled.

Thank you for this! Do the lids fit tightly?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 22/01/2023 08:41

Pringle lids fit on them, so I have a few for food storage.

Others I give to a local hedgehog rescue, who use them as feeding bowls.

WGACA · 22/01/2023 08:41

List them on olio. People take them to use as ramekins when making their own deserts or my friends makes candles in them etc.

elevenplusdilemma · 22/01/2023 08:26

The plastic lids from a Pringles can will fit them so they can be used to store food in fridge / freezer.

Why do people keep saying this?

They don’t.

I mean, they fit approximately, but they don’t seal, you can’t carry them without stuff spilling. I’ve tried.

Unless I’m getting the wrong Gü or wrong Pringles somehow 🤷🏻‍♀️

NotQuiteUsual · 22/01/2023 08:44

I use them for fat I've drained while cooking. Or to put spoons in while cooking. I Dosh out sprinkles while baking with the kids in them too. I find them quite useful but you only need a few.

strumpert · 22/01/2023 08:44

I agree @HiccupHorrendousHaddock the Pringles kids don't fit properly. I've just ordered some of the wooden ones so thanks to whoever suggested that!

SpaceCandyCoconut · 22/01/2023 08:44

Why is it a waste to recycle them?
You wouldn't think twice about recycling a wine bottle or a pasta sauce jar or any other glass food packaging.
You don't have to keep them!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 22/01/2023 08:46

In my house, they are a kitchen windowsill ornament, along with some other mini jam jars that haven’t made it into the recycling yet.

BunchHarman · 22/01/2023 08:47

Coffeecreme · 22/01/2023 08:06

wouldnt charity shops take them?

🫢

BunchHarman · 22/01/2023 08:48

I sling them in the bin/recycling depending on whether I’ve bothered to clean them. Which I probably won’t have done.

WashAsDelicates · 22/01/2023 08:49

Are these the little chine tubs like ramekins? They are so useful! I use them for individual puddings. My lot always want Christmas pudding, but never ask at the same time, so I currently have a big tub of 8 individual puddings at the back of the cupboard. There were 12, but dh and dc3 had puddings last week, and dc1 took a couple back to uni the week before.

Also sugar bowl and used teabag bowl when we have tea in the garden.

MonkeyMindAllOverAround · 22/01/2023 08:09

If they have come with a plastic lid, I use them to put my dry muesli and oats mix for breakfast at the office or take snack seeds/nuts to work.

I have also used them to carry kibble for my small dog if I am having a brunch in a coffee shop.

Pringles lids fit!

primeoflife · 22/01/2023 08:50

Handy for reusable cotton pads in the bathroom

mumda · 22/01/2023 08:50

For measuring spice mixtures into when cooking. Cracking an egg into for brushing on. Or for pouring some milk in for same.
We've only got about four though.

Offer on Freecycle if you've got loads.

beingsunny · 22/01/2023 08:51

I use them for when we have fajitas, so put cheese, guacamole, onion etc in them, also as previously mentioned good for olives or peppers on a charcuterie board

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 22/01/2023 08:52

I have the pastel ones. Any glass one got rehomed.

hair ties in the bedroom
Samples/testers in the bathroom drawer
paperclips/small bulldog clips in my desk drawer

great for art/craft projects

kitchen
snacks
condiments
measured out ingredients
'base' for any hot bits going on the coffee table

visiting children
keeping baked beans etc from 'touching' anything else
snacks
art stuff

(I have separate ones for good & non food

loads of stuff

my favourite use though is a butter dish (with original plastic lids).

I keep the yellow ones for this and have a couple so always a clean one to put butter in when the current one gets to the end.

Forever42 · 22/01/2023 08:54

I fill one with salty water to bathe the cat's eye when it gets a bit manky.

Other than that I pile them in a drawer never to be used again.

Limer · 22/01/2023 08:54

I stand my salt & pepper mills in them, so the cupboard/table doesn't get covered in salt/pepper dust.

GlassBunion · 22/01/2023 08:55

My hoard of around 40 of the bastards are piled up in my sideboard for all the dipping sauces that I never make.
