What do you do with Gu ramekins?

We've recently had 6 Gu puddings (what luxury 😁) and I've diligently washed the ramekins but I don't know what to do with them now.

Seems a waste just to recycle them but not sure what we could use them for...

I use them for when I'm cooking, I measure out all the herbs, spices etc. into separate ramakins before I start then I act like a TV chef and combine the ingredients.

Sometimes I'm Keith Floyd and slurp wine at intervals, sometimes I'm Gordon Ramsey and tell everybody to F off, I'm never Nigella Lawson as I don't have a mirror in the kitchen to look lovingly at myself. I've tried Jamie Oliver but I just can't bring myself to kiss salads with olive oil or use tomatoes as a pop of colour.
On balance Keith Floyd comes out on top. (so to speak!)

Presumably people don't get conflicted about other glass jars (jam/marmalade/Pickled onions/cranberry sauce etc to name a few we've been through recently)

We just recycle. Isn't it supposed to be better to recycle glass than all the plastic?!

DarkForces · 22/01/2023 09:53

I'm growing baby succulents in mine although they'll need to be moved on soon!

Decorate and use as a spare change pot?

This is brilliant 👍🏻

StillWantingADog · 22/01/2023 09:53

I’ve kept some but if I kept the lot I would have 200+
so recycling

Cuppaand2biscuits · 22/01/2023 09:54

180 fan oven. I do it so it's easy not so it's low fat! Sausages and hash browns in the oven, add the eggs for last 15 minutes.

movesyouveneverseen · 22/01/2023 09:55

I use ours when I fancy some chocolate (post kids bedtime!), a mix of chocolate buttons, Wispa bites, anything we have in really. You can for a surprising amount in!!

Aside from that they get in the way in the cupboard!

LondonJax · 22/01/2023 10:00

I use them for sauces on the table when we have people round for dinner - nice to get a matching look!

I now use them to weigh out yoghurt etc as I'm on a diet and a small helping looks lost in a 'proper' bowl.

I use them when cooking for measuring out small amounts of spices etc or if I want to put smaller weights (like nuts etc) into the recipe.

I have a couple that I use if there's a power cut as tea light or candle holders.

Make mousses etc in them.

And I used to use them as paint holders when my DS was little - you can squirt a little bit in each pot and they don't tip.

Loads of uses!

Crestaq · 22/01/2023 10:00

I don't buy Gu any more far too expensive, but I used to.
I make my own chocolate fondants with Lindt or G&B cooking dark chocolate. Waaay, cheaper and taste amazing. And you get 6.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/01/2023 10:03

I did keep some thinking the guinea-pigs might use them , but they#d have yelled at me "What's this then Mother? Samples?"

Might be better for smaller (less greedy) rodenty ones .

Neverplayleapfrogwithmrpipes · 22/01/2023 10:08

Collect and donate to a school just before Christmas as they are great to decorate for Christmas.

NannyR · 22/01/2023 10:08

The house I work in has a cupboard full of these things, that many that they fall out when you open the door. They do come in useful for kids arts and crafts stuff, but I don't get why you wouldn't just chuck them in the recycling - after all it's just a small jar with no lid.

Babyroobs · 22/01/2023 10:09

I often think they are a waste. We use them to put used tea bags in or to put warm water in when bathing the dogs eyes, or we just recycle them or their is a person in the village who collects them for some kind of fund raising project. we do have too many packed into our cupboard though !!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 22/01/2023 10:12

Not read the thread so apologies if duplicating.
My son had a student job at a charity shop and said they were very popular.

People do get conflicted, but a jar of jam would last us a fortnight, 4 gu jars a week is just a step too far for me. First step in the recycling wheel is to refuse packaging... we do that by making different choices, making or buying something that doesn't come in individual portions. Gu is great for those who need an individual portion. We don't.

They make over 70 million individual glass ramekined puddings a year. That's a lot of energy going into making, delivering, picking up and crushing and remaking glass.

TheBelmont · 22/01/2023 10:14

I actually stopped by Gu desserts when I ran out of space in the cupboard 🫣 I recycled them all but the thought of rebuilding the stash caused me pudding anxiety 😂

greenacrylicpaint · 22/01/2023 10:14

dip bowls for asian type meals.
dip bowls for doritos (everyone can double dip...).
measure out crisps from sharing pack.
microwave scrambled eggs.
baked cheese (cubed brie/camembert).
use it to keep used teabags until they have cooled down.

Store them in a cupboard and knock them clattering every time I get something else out of said cupboard.

This. I've stopped buying gu puddings for exactly this reason

Vinylloving · 22/01/2023 10:17

Olives, nuts, chopped herbs for garnish, to catch spiders... Mostly stacked in cupboard

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 22/01/2023 10:18

Mezze pots
Tomato and mayo

ArtixLynx · 22/01/2023 10:18

sauces,
craft pots for keeping things in while i'm making stuff,
they're useful for keeping the little tiny bits of lego safe if you're keen builders, water pots for painting,
snack pots.. perfect portion size for skittles, smarties or M&Ms if you're the kind of person who buys the big share bags and only has a handful a day.. same with blueberries...etc
individual jelly pots if you make your own jelly.

It gets recycled though, made into more glass. Years ago before everything came in plastic, it came in glass and you'd take the glass bottle back for reuse, see also milk

Our problem is not glass ramekins its the terracotta pots that bakes come in. They cant be recycled so they go in the bin

cravingtoblerone · 22/01/2023 10:20

I tend to use a couple for fridge storage of small portions of tinned food from open tins - e.g.baked beans, sweetcorn etc. Have those stretchy silicone lids that fit over.

Mostly I take them to the charity shop...

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 22/01/2023 10:26

I love how "take them to the charity shop" for a lot of MN means exactly the same as "let someone else chuck them in the recycling". Except charity shops PAY for waste disposal and your ever so kind donation is costing them money.

If you don't want your discarded Gu glass pots, why do you think anyone else will?

Crestaq · 22/01/2023 10:27

THIS recipe. I can't find it online, but for a chocolate hit I can't beat it.

What do you do with Gu ramekins?
