Accidentally left oven on all night, guess how much it cost?

The bulb went in the oven a few weeks ago and keep forgetting to order a new one. I forgot to turn it off last night when I finished using it, walked into the hall kitchen this morning and it was like when you step out of the airport on holiday. Guess how much this cost me?

DH and I once went on holiday for a week and left the oven on after warming croissants for breakfast!

Fortunately it was about 20 years ago when electricity was cheaper, and more to the point, we didn't set the flat on fire.

Take care people - remember to turn it off!

My mother's friend made meringues, put them in the bottom of the oven on a very low temperature, and then she and her OH went away in their caravan for a week. They got back and apparently the meringues were still perfectly edible, just a bit scorched! This was about 40 years ago, so no competitions regarding how much it costs to leave an oven on for a week, even on a very low heat!

@Cheeseandabsolutelycrackers

No, it isnt. There used to be an economy tariff that gave cheaper energy at night but it isnt available anymore so only legacy customers have it.

There is an electric vehicle tariff which some people have. Their electricity is cheaper per unit overnight. But that doesnt affect gas prices.

Legacy customers? I'll have you know that Economy 7 is all the rage with people with solar and batteries (and no EV). Definitely still available, signed up for it only a month ago. Electricity only, not gas, but that was always the case.

pigsinoodies · 21/01/2023 21:53

Leaving an oven on all night is about the same as leaving a gas fire on a medium/low setting all night. Maybe 1.5 kWh of gas - and roughly the same heat output as a 1 kWh electric fire (what we used to call a 'one bar fire'). So 1.5 kWh of gas x 10 hrs = 15 kWh = about £1.60.

Nannyfannybanny · 22/01/2023 10:48

I have economy 7, have had for the past 50 years. It makes no difference with solar panels and battery. Had them installed last year, with a local authority scheme. Last couple of days we have made 12/13kw. What no one bothered to inform us,is that they take electricity from the grid to run the system. I check the weather forecast daily, then have to decide whether to do washing etc at night or wait for some sun.

Isn't the idea in winter that you use the E7 lower cost electricity to charge up the batteries so then you can use them during the day and have day time electricity at the nighttime rate?

I don't entirely understand - solar with battery definitely works well with E7. 85% of our consumption is on the overnight rate. If it's a gloomy forecast, charge the battery fully overnight, otherwise just charge it enough to see you through to 10am or so. Doing the washing at night is an easy option if your machine will delay (ours won't) but over the year we get enough sun to do such things in the daytime at least 2/3 of the time.

firsttimemama · 22/01/2023 16:08

@HangerLaneGyratorySystem we are dual fuel with Eon Next as well. And they have put my DD to £302 in addition to the £66 discount - in fact they wanted to move me to £333 but I managed to reduce it only - it only lets you go 10% less than the6 calculate. I was paying £180 per month last year standard tariff. I have an old house though but I still think more than double the cost on their estimate is out of order.

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 22/01/2023 17:10

@firsttimemama the OP seems to be on the same tariff but her bill is much less. This thread is making me think I need to investigate further. My DD is £149 with the discount so would be over £200 without it. 3 bed semi 1930s style.

LNEAX · 22/01/2023 17:38

Checked my smart meter the other weekday morning (around 7am) when the heating was on, £1.71 per hour just for the gas 😩

Also in a 1930s semi, I cancelled my dd when contract ran out as they wanted far too much (I don’t want to overpay and request it back as I’m capable of saving myself). £350 this month after the discount.

Jayne35 · 22/01/2023 17:42

Got a smart meter ten days ago - so far our average day has cost us £3.50. That's certain to rise after this weekend - there's no way we could manage without heating during the day with temps at 5 degrees.

Wow, that’s good if dual fuel. Mine varies from £13 - £25 a day, depending on how much heating, washing, drying and cooking.

AnonSource · 22/01/2023 17:43

I did the same a few weeks ago, bulb has gone in our oven too. It used over £8 worth of electric!

£5 at the most.

Gas oven, left of gas mark 6 (I think that’s equivalent to about 180 degrees electric). I’m on the price cap rip off prices not a deal, the oven is newish and was A+++ rated when I purchased it 18 months ago.

My heating is off over night so no heating costs.

I was dreading looking at the smart meter but did anyway, the grand total £1.48 minus the standing charge. That was from midnight to 9am. If it wasn’t so dangerous I might do it more often and the down stairs was and still is so lovely and warm.

Oven wasn’t heating to that temp al night just ticking over. Glad you didn’t have a fire & now you know how to cheaply heat downstairs without gas 😝

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 22/01/2023 18:22

So @Jayne35 will you spend that £350 though? Is that likely to be your actual cost? Or is it just Eon getting a free loan?!

BeKindBeNiceHelpEachOther · 22/01/2023 18:34

My gas n electric was 150 a month til I just got my Dec-Jan bill and it’s 306 after the free 66! How the hell has it doubled? I’m not in Dd n just pay a monthly bill for what I use-I know things were on due to Xmas but this is just plain robbery, literally half the rent-the people of this country are always ripped off! Edf French customers get a 4% rise Edf English customers have 100% rise-so were subside the French! Bonney de douche! As Del would say

Atsocta · 22/01/2023 18:37

Unfortunately December and January have been cold months so more energy has been used for the heating

upinaballoon · 22/01/2023 19:57

£27, 562 ?

PinkPanther27 · 22/01/2023 21:05

Haven't RTFT but with the current costs- £120000

Weedoormatnomore · 22/01/2023 21:29

If it was a gas oven do you not have to wait for a reading till the next day ?. My gas is not registered on my smart meter till 12am i know from reading up about smart meters it works like that for a lot of other people too.

Ineke · 22/01/2023 21:47

My kitchen is very very cold, always. I use the oven a lot on low to cook meals as it also keeps the kitchen warm. It feels like I am maximising it’s potential. So far the cost has been quite low.

We're likely keeping the house colder than is safe though.

I'm beginning to think our terraced house must be quite well insulated - during the warmer patch at the beginning of Jan we weren't even turning on the heating some days and feeling OK. Maybe our neighbours are blasting out the heat and it's coming through the walls!
