Accidentally left oven on all night, guess how much it cost?

The bulb went in the oven a few weeks ago and keep forgetting to order a new one. I forgot to turn it off last night when I finished using it, walked into the hall kitchen this morning and it was like when you step out of the airport on holiday. Guess how much this cost me?

I wouldn’t care about the money as my anxiety would just be happy that I hadn’t burned the house down 😂

That’s good to know it’s so cheap.

Martin Lewis was saying about how microwaves and air fryers are quicker but use much more energy and so are more costly to run.

Ilovetocrochet · 21/01/2023 12:08

Not as much as the cost will be of leaving the upstairs window ( direct access to thermostat control) open for 4 weeks during the icy spell in December! I don’t have a smart metre and am too scared to read my metre and work it out myself!

My standing charge according to Eon Next app is 28.48p a day.

That's odd; I'm with EON and it's 49p a day standing charge, nearly double!

I was surprised it cost so little. I just hope that it helps some posters not worry so much about using their ovens, it certainly has helped me.

It's electric ovens people are worried about, gas is cheaper.

I had the oven on all day in Sept doing slow roast pork and it was c£15.

Goodread1 · 21/01/2023 12:09

I think at least £10 or Bit more

49p is your electric. The gas is the 28p one. My gas is 27p because I'm on an old fix.

FluffyUnionSocks · 21/01/2023 12:10

@venus7 my electricity standing charge is 49p oven is gas though.

Of course; you're correct.
It's already been a long day.........!

tabulahrasa · 21/01/2023 12:17

Last time DD did that after a night out, it cost me about £250.... it broke the oven 😐

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 21/01/2023 12:17

Judging by the way my smart meter revs up when I turn the oven on, I’d say somewhere between £10 and £20.

Cheeseandabsolutelycrackers · 21/01/2023 12:19

So how much did it cost?

The standing charge is not for energy consumed, it's a standard daily amount you are charged regardless of what you used.

IAGAF

As Kevin Wilson would say ‘DILLIGAF’ !!

lieselotte · 21/01/2023 12:21

DH and I once went on holiday for a week and left the oven on after warming croissants for breakfast!

Fortunately it was about 20 years ago when electricity was cheaper, and more to the point, we didn't set the flat on fire.

Take care people - remember to turn it off!

£1.48. The OP's post at 11.56.

Sort of thought youd have posted the answer by now. This really isnt as interesting as you seem to think it is.
What temperature did you have it at? Gas or electric? What rate are you on?

These guessing threads are never that good and are only really funny when the amount is massive. Which this really wont be.

Why do people have to sneer like this? The OP posted the answer less than an hour after asking, and lots of people were interested. Nor was there any indication she was trying to be funny Confused

CohenTree · 21/01/2023 12:28

One hundred and eighty! (pence)?

Cheeseandabsolutelycrackers · 21/01/2023 12:29

Ah ok, missed that post. Not surprising really, energy is a lot cheaper at night when nobody is using it.

Nannyfannybanny · 21/01/2023 12:32

Never mind the cost, what on earth were you cooking at midnight?

cakeorwine · 21/01/2023 12:34

FluffyUnionSocks · 21/01/2023 11:56

Gas oven, left of gas mark 6 (I think that’s equivalent to about 180 degrees electric). I’m on the price cap rip off prices not a deal, the oven is newish and was A+++ rated when I purchased it 18 months ago.

My heating is off over night so no heating costs.

I was dreading looking at the smart meter but did anyway, the grand total £1.48 minus the standing charge. That was from midnight to 9am. If it wasn’t so dangerous I might do it more often and the down stairs was and still is so lovely and warm.

Once they are up to temperature, it doesn't take much energy to maintain that temperature.

If the house was warm, then the heat escaping from the oven would be warming the house up. So your oven would need more heat to keep it at temperature.

Probably easier to have the heating on overnight.

Electricity is. And only if you are on Economy 7 or if you have a deal with your Smart Meter company
Gas isn't

No it's not, it's exactly the same price. With the exception of electricity (this was gas) when people have a special night rate meter or one of the new car charging rates.

But none of that is to do with how many people are using it, it's to do with the rates you are on. And doesn't apply to gas.

It revs up because it's starting from cold.
Once it gets to temperature, it uses very little to maintain the temperature.

Just like house heating.

cakeorwine · 21/01/2023 12:40

It's clear a lot of people on here don't understand how ovens or things like fridges work.

You leave your fridge on all the time. It is not using energy all the time. Just when it's doing its job.

Same for an oven. Its job is to get to a temperature and then try to maintain that temperature with occasional bursts of energy

My DH has just told me we're not going on holiday if we can get the stepping off the plane experience for £1.48.

😂

I'm with EonNext and the gas standing charge is 28.48 the same as the OP; electric is 42.67.

OP out of interest how much are you spending a day? Well, anyone really, how much are you seeing come up per day on the smart meter? I'm having the heating on maybe 6 hours a day and its around £14. I've sort of decided once it hits £14 we have to go to bed!
