Accidentally left oven on all night, guess how much it cost?

The bulb went in the oven a few weeks ago and keep forgetting to order a new one. I forgot to turn it off last night when I finished using it, walked into the hall kitchen this morning and it was like when you step out of the airport on holiday. Guess how much this cost me?

Its not about the oven but the fact that it heated up downstairs for less than 2 pounds.

Pumpkin20222 · 21/01/2023 14:50

Glad you are okay and not hit with a big bill. Hope everyone has a carbon monoxide alarm. Just checked ours after a horrible accident locally.

mathanxiety · 21/01/2023 14:55

Next time you do it, bung in a big shoulder of pork.

So if you set it to 180C it will ignore that and keep on climbing until it catches on fire and burns the house down?

It doesn’t have a temperature dial, just numbers 1 to 9. I have to turn it down manually.

Now I’m starting to think it’s broken!

Yes, but if you set it to 6 it's supposed to not get hotter than 6. If it keeps getting hotter and hotter then the thermostat is broken.

Wheretheskyisblue · 21/01/2023 15:07

The main cost will be in heating the oven up. Once it is up to temperature the cost will be minimal just that of replacing any lost heat. If our oven is on for an hour 95% of the heat use is in the first 10 minutes.

It would probably have been cheaper to have the heating on downstairs - as the oven is supposed to be heating "the oven" and not really letting heat out into the surroundings.

As Kevin Wilson would say ‘DILLIGAF’ !!

good ol Kevin Bloody Wilson! havent heard of him in a while

FluffyUnionSocks · 21/01/2023 16:17

@firsttimemama yes they did it was a computer error, the lady I spoke to said it was due to a software update and has effected a % of customers. I called them and it was sorted over the phone. The bill was produced while I was on the call and then it’s been monthly since.

The oven has a vent that’s on the counter behind the hob, it blows out hot air when the oven is on,. We had electric before which didn’t have this so assume it’s something to do with it being gas.

that;s crazy,
you could have cooked a casserolle
ditch the air fryer

Yarrawonga · 21/01/2023 17:10

If you set it to 6, what do you think that 6 means?

It could mean the size of the flame, like on the hob.

Smart arse!

The numbers relate to temperatures. If 1 = 140C and 9 = 240C. 6 would be about 200C.

If your oven doesnt reach the set temperature and then switch to maintaining that heat then it is broken.
It shouldn't just keep getting hotter and hotter.

The numbers 1 to 9 correspond to set temperatures in degrees Celsius. You set it to 6 then it is the same as setting an oven to 200 degrees.
Once it reaches 200 degrees, it stops heating up and starts maintaining.

If your oven doesnt do that then it is broken and dangerous.

@HangerLaneGyratorySystem these prices at for dual fuel of gas and electric combined.
Lowest day in January so far £4.56 (including standing charge)
Average daily spend per day in January is £6.89
High daily spend in January £9.72

3 bed detached eco friendly new build (2017) with triple glazed windows and solar panels built into the roof at the front. The developer marketed them as eco friendly not actually sure what’s different about them to classify to be sold as eco friendly homes. Family of 5, everyone baths or showers daily, 2 wash loads wash and tumble dried, dishwasher one every day and heating on from 5am-10pm set at 20.5 so all in all not to bad, we pay £118 a month dd and obviously get the £66 added to our account as well. Our usage hadn’t really changed since last year but the cost has as it was costing us £96 a month where as it is now £184.

Ah ok, missed that post. Not surprising really, energy is a lot cheaper at night when nobody is using it.

Is all energy cheaper at night? I thought it was just on certain tariffs?

Is it a grill?

No matter what the amount of flame is - the air will get hot. A bigger flame will give out more heat.

But if you have to manually turn down the size of the flame if it gets too hot, then it's not a very practical gas oven.

How do you know what temperature the oven is at?

WeepingSomnambulist · 21/01/2023 17:41

@Cheeseandabsolutelycrackers

No, it isnt. There used to be an economy tariff that gave cheaper energy at night but it isnt available anymore so only legacy customers have it.

There is an electric vehicle tariff which some people have. Their electricity is cheaper per unit overnight. But that doesnt affect gas prices.

Grammarnut · 21/01/2023 17:41

I have done this occasionally - same reason - and it's pointless worrying about it as far as cost goes. Probably between £8 and £16 depending on how high it was on. Get a bulb, cheaper and a one off.

firsttimemama · 21/01/2023 17:42

Thanks @FluffyUnionSocks, I am loathe to call them and ask them to bill me, which I know makes little sense, but I cannot bring myself to it. My DD is £300 pm so I am well in credit balance. And I should really get it straight, but I just can’t reconcile ringing them and asking them to bill me.

SmudgeButt · 21/01/2023 17:45

I thought that seeing as this is Mumsnet you were going to say it cost you your marriage.

weve got dual fuel eon next too but it looks like we’re paying double the price for much less ! Thank you for info though - we must be doing something wrong. Family 4 we don’t all shower every day, do 2/3 loads of washing a week no tumble dryer 😳

HPFA · 21/01/2023 18:59

Got a smart meter ten days ago - so far our average day has cost us £3.50. That's certain to rise after this weekend - there's no way we could manage without heating during the day with temps at 5 degrees.

I know a lot of people don't like smart meters but it's been very educational. Advice on saving energy tends to give the impression that all the measures are equal but they aren't - if frequent cups of tea and refilling hot water bottles allows you to keep your heating off or at a lower temp that will mean a big saving despite the cost of using the kettle. And some things I was fussing the family over I've learned aren't worth the effort.
