Accidentally left oven on all night, guess how much it cost?

The bulb went in the oven a few weeks ago and keep forgetting to order a new one. I forgot to turn it off last night when I finished using it, walked into the hall kitchen this morning and it was like when you step out of the airport on holiday. Guess how much this cost me?

Nine and a half thousand pounds.

😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/01/2023 12:51

Less then £2 for maybe 10/12hrs cooking depending what time you cooked last night

sounds good

I was surprised it cost so little. I just hope that it helps some posters not worry so much about using their ovens, it certainly has helped me.

Was that just the extra cost of having it on?
How much do you think it actually cost to get to temperature when you started to cook?

It cost £1.48 between midnight and 9am - when it was maintaining the temperature.

How much did it cost to use when you turned it on - which I presume was sometime in the evening - the time when it would have used most of the energy?

cakeorwine · 21/01/2023 13:00

The interesting questions from this if people are worried about use:

What is the price difference between say running an oven at 180 C for 1 hour and running an oven at 180 C for 2 hours or more?

There is the cost of getting it to 180 C and then there is the additional cost of maintaining it at that temperature over time.

A "fixed charge" plus a cost per hour question as it were.

Not read any post other than your initial post.
My guess ( and I have no idea of usage as I don't use my electric oven) is £7.42p.

Wise words, there is so much hyperbole and missunderstanding on energy use.

Once a well insulated oven reaches it's required temp it doesn't need much to keep it there, same as a well insulated house.

Since the price rises we keep a check on our energy use and have become much more relaxed about it.

I have an Everhot stove and it is on 24/7 but is well insulated. the two hotplates are on as is the top oven (I don't have bottom oven on as just dont use it) at around 190 to 200.

It is good background heat I don't have a toaster or a kettle, I can put clothes on top to flatten (I call it ironing rofl) and I can dry clothes in front of it or on the top if not left overnight. It also keeps the kitchen and dining area at a good temperature heat wise (more than takes the edge but not the same as radiators blasting 22 degrees).

I calculate is costs around 100 a month maybe just under. Seems alot till you start taking other factors into account I am not spending on. We work from home and for the most part only need a quick top up of radiators for 30 minutes around 1pm

I love it

My DH has just told me we're not going on holiday if we can get the stepping off the plane experience for £1.48.

🤣🤣

Arniesleftleg · 21/01/2023 13:44

Eleventy billion pound!

Bookist · 21/01/2023 13:51

£17

firsttimemama · 21/01/2023 13:53

On a separate note @FluffyUnionSocks have EON stopped billing you monthly for gas? My last 3 monthly bills from EON have only had electricity on them??

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 21/01/2023 13:54

I've read it somewhere that starting the oven cost most. So it makes sense that the oven is hot, it won't cost much for running.

Yarrawonga · 21/01/2023 14:02

The gas oven I have doesn’t automatically adjust to maintain or to heat up. It’s a constant heat regardless, from when it is turned onto when it is turned off.

Yarrawonga · 21/01/2023 14:03

on to, not onto.

So if you set it to 180C it will ignore that and keep on climbing until it catches on fire and burns the house down?

It's like heating the house.
It costs more to get it to the required temperature and then it just needs some energy to maintain that temperature as heat is lost to the outside

So you are saying that it just heats the oven up and carries on heating the oven up?

It must get quite hot then.

Most gas ovens have a dial you set the temperature to, it gets there and then it maintains that temperature.

Because that just makes cooking so much easier

Firsttimeinsnow · 21/01/2023 14:11

Great Post OP. My DH is a chef, so accustomed to leaving ovens on. A couple of time I have forgotten to check and it has been left on (electic). Really good to know.

Not that wise as she's not said how much it cost to get to that temperature

I'm with EonNext and the gas standing charge is 28.48 the same as the OP; electric is 42.67.

OP out of interest how much are you spending a day? Well, anyone really, how much are you seeing come up per day on the smart meter? I'm having the heating on maybe 6 hours a day and its around £14. I've sort of decided once it hits £14 we have to go to bed!

we are with Eon next, from Monday heating (gas) was on from 6am-5pm, for this week we paid £55, so thats about £7.85 a day on gas (including cooking, using hot water, standing charge, boiler is set for 60 degrees).

Tamarindtree · 21/01/2023 14:31

£9.99

cakeorwine · 21/01/2023 14:32

I think our oven uses about 6 kWh to get to 180 C and to cook for about 30 minutes. That's based from summer when the heating was off so gas use was just cooking

It doesn't cost much more to cook for longer at that temperature.

Yarrawonga · 21/01/2023 14:36

So if you set it to 180C it will ignore that and keep on climbing until it catches on fire and burns the house down?

It doesn’t have a temperature dial, just numbers 1 to 9. I have to turn it down manually.

Now I’m starting to think it’s broken!
