Does anyone have a dolls house? As a hobby?

I'm considering it and wanted to know if there were any enthusiasts out there

I have a lovely set of apothecary drawers on my now spare room and keep envisaging a genuine Edwardian or Victorian dolls house sat on it and then spending time sourcing period bits and pieces for it

Anyway, that's the current day dream and I wondered if anyone had a similar interest?

Triang houses that were sold under Gamages label are much less cataloged than houses sold marked as Triang. There is likely to be several versions that do not feature in surviving store catalogues.
Are there any tiny indents around the opening where garage door hinges once were?
I think the stairs in your house are original, they are very like Triang stairs of the era. I'm wondering if your house is a slightly differing version of the 24A internally, as it looks original?

Minimoan · 12/01/2023 22:47

The 'splotches' around the bottom are sweet original hand painted Triang flowers. I would suggest that you read up/post on the DHP&P dolls house for how to carefully scrape overpainting, and then see if the same original flowers are hidden under the pink paint?

ChocChipOwl · 12/01/2023 22:52

No hinges or anything like that. Just this kind of split window which has clearly always been there so I don't think there was ever a garage door here?

I think the laminate type flooring is original. It certainly looks bloody ancient! Not so sure about the carpet on the stairs though

The green window shutters have been overpainted in bright green. I can see they were original as the top and bottom tacks are present. These shutters were made of thin cars with a green shutter print on them. Replicas (made very accurately from original Triang shutters) can be bought from a lovely father and son team who handmake replacement parts for Triang houses. This is what they would have looked like ...

I suspect your house is a version of the 24A that hasn't been pictured. The front looks original to me. I wonder if the window was a shop window, with the shop in the room behind??

Frumpymumma · 12/01/2023 23:00

Now i want a project these sound fab. But id like to do a more modern one.

However... Im very much bull in a China shop for rushing and ruining things.
And likely won't have time as young dcs.

But one day....

ChocChipOwl · 12/01/2023 23:01

Ooh a shop window sort of makes sense due to how the split is in the two 'panes' of glass? Exactly as a shop would be and unusual for a house

I'm glad the house is originally all cream as I don't like the red colour way that's been added much. And I'll definitely look into seeing if I can get to those potential flowers.

The stairs would have been plain painted white, but the carpet is sweet! The floor paper is old, but not original. The original paper would have been a darker parquet floor pattern. It can be seen in the interior of the house I posted above.

Minimoan · 12/01/2023 23:10

Replica floor paper (scanned from original patterns) can be bought from the 'Dollshouse Man' on eBay - he also reproduces lots of wallpaper that would have featured in these houses. Sometimes original scraps can be found behind newer wallpapers/under newer flooring.

Minimoan · 12/01/2023 23:13

And the window frames were likely to have been a deep chocolate brown with light cream opening windows.

ChocChipOwl · 12/01/2023 23:15

You're so clever @Minimoan I can tell you have a real passion and knowledge.

It'll look so much nicer once cream again and I'll do the window sills in a deep brown. The black is quite harsh. I wonder why they painted the whole thing a horrible shade of rust?!

Minimoan good spot on finding the house, have been looking through the Lines Bros database but didn't find that one!

Minimoan · 12/01/2023 23:25

This is the father/son team who do replica Triang shutters (and other Triang pieces) ... they are so helpful! I would recommend them and am sure they would provide to your measurements as your top shutters are smaller than your bottom window shutters.

Minimoan · 12/01/2023 23:26

Forgot the image, sorry!

I have my mothers 1930's dolls house. It is a copy of the play house given to Princesses Elizabeth by the people of Wales . I want to renovate it properly and keep buying bits for it.

Minimoan · 12/01/2023 23:29

Daisy - that's a lovely heirloom! You must have a Triang Princess house - I'm very envious!!

PollyAmour · 11/01/2023 17:47

Yes!
I bought a Triang dolls house from the 1950's, it's 1/18 scale rather than 1/12. It is tatty and unloved and cost a tenner from the local hospice shop. It has original windows, curtains, doors, wall and floor coverings. It gives me hours of joy, sourcing and/or making furnishings for it.

Make sure you know the scale of the dolls house you buy so you buy or make accessories the right size.

I can't bare to part with DD's (23)
I'm guessing it's 1930/40's?
How would I work out its scale?
Feeling a refurbishment.

Triang Princess ... a very poignant house now ...

Minimoan · 12/01/2023 23:40

I adore the photos of the princesses with their house ...
