Does anyone have a dolls house? As a hobby?

I'm considering it and wanted to know if there were any enthusiasts out there

I have a lovely set of apothecary drawers on my now spare room and keep envisaging a genuine Edwardian or Victorian dolls house sat on it and then spending time sourcing period bits and pieces for it

Anyway, that's the current day dream and I wondered if anyone had a similar interest?

Red silk chaise lounge. Again, Victorian

So there are some small pieces which I've started building up. Have had to take a breather from buying bits and pieces because when you're trying to buy all antique, costs add up 😀

May treat myself to an antique lion door knocker this week!

And I have to be careful that I'm dating things correctly so this also takes time! I'm as sure as I can be on most of my bits and pieces but I'm unsure about the arm chair, side little unit and baby high chair. I think they're Victorian but I don't know for sure

You have some lovely pieces ChocChipOwl, now to concentrate on how you're going to decorate the rooms for those pieces.

You starting this thread and input from other dolls house fanatics has given me a push to get on with mine. At the moment have decided to redecorate the music room made a start by stripping off wallpaper and putting in more electric connections. Very enjoyable morning 😃

@KeziaOAP can you tell I'm clearly more drawn to the pieces that'll go in rooms than the actual decorating of the rooms?! I've managed one wall of wallpaper and one flooring which I'm not sure I like so meh - could be back to the drawing board!

Glad to hear you're also making progress

Don't you dare let your DH take the Triang house to the tip!! If I lived anywhere near you, I'd take it off your hands like a shot, but I think geographically we are miles apart, I'm in North Wales. Donate it to a charity shop? That's where I bought mine for a tenner. It's cost me a fair bit more than a tenner since then though, but I have tried to keep it 1940's post war style in the furnishings and decor.

Lovely to see this thread pop up again and the up dates.

My croft is a work in progress and very much insoired by this thread. I have made the shell out of foam board. All the walls will be covered in clay bricks then painted. I peck away at that. Yesterday I made a fire place from an old box, torn up egg carton and polyfiller. This morning I made a fire grate from a box and a buckle type thing I found. Painted and modge podged. Nothing is glued in place yet because I want to do the floor first. My work friends are collecting more egg boxes to make flag stones.

Love the fireplace Dancing.
Sounds as though your craft is really coming along!

Jaffapaffa · 26/03/2023 17:43

I've only just found this thread - yes, lots of us have dolls houses.

And are members of dolls house clubs.

And go to dolls house fairs.....

BusterGonad · 27/03/2023 10:53

This thread is a real treasure. I've always loved dolls houses.

QueueEtwo · 28/03/2023 18:33

I've joined a dolls house Facebook group on the back of this thread but still haven't taken the leap!

Maybe looking at pictures of other peoples is enough for now!

How are you getting on @ChocChipOwl

TroysMammy · 31/10/2023 08:33

I know this hasn't been posted on for a while but I thought I would resurrect it as I have just bought yet another Dolls house. It is a Dolls House Emporium discontinued Oak Hurst Gardens and extension. It hasn't been built so as I have a blank canvas I'm going to make it into a modern house.

Does anyone want to share their dolls house journey?

RubyBoozeDay · 31/10/2023 10:04

Me!!! I bought a fabulous dolls house from a charity shop for £20. I haven’t checked it yet to find out the make.

I’m absolutely delighted with the furniture inside it - a mini dolls house, an ironing board and iron, a budgie in a cage, goldfish in a fish tank, a telephone, a retro television, handmade tapestry rugs, a handmade patchwork quilt, a pram, a bicycle, a sledge and a Christmas tree.

It’s obviously been well loved and I will cherish it in turn. It needs a lot of TLC.

Giggorata · 31/10/2023 12:45

Looking forward to seeing pics of your houses, as they develop!

I really should get on with doing mine… perhaps I can get on with one of the smaller ones, since work on the big house is still ongoing and I have stuff everywhere and no room…

If I am not doing anything on Hallowe'en, I generally light up one of the witchy cottages and put it in the window for trick or treaters but I haven't got any sweets in, so I have to go shopping…
Maybe I'll display this one, Ameth Cottage. Having a glass of red are Shamley Green and Fenny Castle.
I want to put a colour wash over this one, inside and out. Possibly sage green. And yes, that's a ghost emerging from the mirror.👻

My recent acquisition hasn't been built yet but I'm on my way to the Kensington Dollshouse Festival for inspiration and to marvel at the exquisite and expensive miniatures for sale. I might buy a few but will try not to get too carried away.

KeziaOAP · 02/12/2023 13:39

@TroysMammy it's very easy to get carried away......😊

WavingCatsandDogs · 02/12/2023 14:19

I bought my daughter an ordinary dolls house when she was 3. I have been slowly doing it up with paper and carpet etc. She's now 15 and lost interest but I still want to keep it!

DollsHouseDreams · 03/12/2023 16:02

I'm so tempted to get another house, but then I have a firm word with myself to enjoy the one I've got. SO expensive to do properly.

TroysMammy · 03/12/2023 18:18

@DollsHouseDreams how about box rooms that can be stacked.

DollsHouseDreams · 04/12/2023 14:36

That's a lovely thought TroysMammy but it has to be a complete house or nothing Smile Room boxes don't do it for me. It needs stairs, a front opening, a proper scale...also I spent a fair amount doing up my current dolls house and I haven't really got room for two, or want to sell it either. But sometimes I am really itching to get into a new dolls house and then I remember how £££ it can get and how much time it takes.

Dollshousedolly · 18/09/2024 08:57

I know this is an old thread but so much information here, I thought to post here rather than start a new one.

Years ago, I bought Wentworth Court and Basement but with young children, it turned out not to be the right time to build and decorate it. Fifteen years later, I feel the time is now. It’s not going to be a tradition Georgian house but a ‘renovation/refurb’ with a nod to the Georgian era and some antique furniture but in today’s setting. A modern, comfortable, classic home I think. Will make the curtains/soft furnishings myself and hoping to make some pieces of furniture too. A young family living in a city, possibly London. @pippapoo62 your Wentworth house and basement is fab, I’m starting with the basement, hope it turns out half as nice as yours.

Anyway, I’ve had a wealth of information from this thread from various posters and now have a list of suppliers. Hope some of the original posters are around. @ChocChipOwl hope your house coming along and every one else’s too.

QueueEtwo · 28/09/2024 11:40

I bought one about 18 months ago but haven't actually done anything with it! I love it though!
