Does anyone have a dolls house? As a hobby?

I'm considering it and wanted to know if there were any enthusiasts out there

I have a lovely set of apothecary drawers on my now spare room and keep envisaging a genuine Edwardian or Victorian dolls house sat on it and then spending time sourcing period bits and pieces for it

Anyway, that's the current day dream and I wondered if anyone had a similar interest?

I have a tall townhouse and I've just done the living room in periwinkle blue and pinstripe. Love buying accessories.

stayathomegardener · 13/01/2023 00:02

It's very dusty, I'll do some house keeping and take some more pictures tomorrow after work Smile

Aah. This thread is lovely. I have a Tudor dollhouse and probably spend more on it than my actual house. I'm fitting it out as authentically to the period as I can, but keep finding other lovely things that aren't right for the period, so i'm obviously going to have to get another house! The only thing it won't have is any actual dolls as they freak me out!

Giggorata · 13/01/2023 00:40

Here's a few of my dolls house dolls:

@Minimoan well, I little sandpaper scrub has revealed there's definitely something under the red paint and I think it's flowers. However, the sandpaper I have to hand is not going to do the job, unless I want to spend all year painstakingly rubbing away! I think I'll try and get hold of a bottle of paint stripper today maybe.

It is an engrossing hobby!

think carefully about whether you want lighting in it. If you are gojng to wire it, this is best done before decorating. Or you can buy battery operated lights, which don’t need wiring.

for repainting, I’d go for a satinwood, not chalk paint, which is too flat.

wallpaper - have a look at B&Q and grab yourself some samples…

there are some great websites, including Melody Jane and Dollshouse Mania. For older style furniture, have a look at the Pedlars Tray and Jane Harrop.

my current house is a Georgian townhouse, lived in by a modern day family. My weakness is Julie Campbell dolls.

Minimum World is another good site.
as is Small Wonders

Mini Mundas do the most incredible furniture kits

Reutter Porcelain is fabulous.

More progress! Moved onto acetone now and the original shutters have revealed themselves plus lots of green and black paint coming off

@TrashyPanda some really helpful tips thank you. I wouldn't have thought of satinwood

Have a look on local selling sites etc... I think 2nd hand dolls houses are the cheapest they have ever been as there are so many of them about.
I collect triang 40s to 60s dolls houses and spend ages (andvtoo much money) buying appropriate furniture and accessories for them.

ChocChipOwl · 13/01/2023 10:36

And yes, original flooring underneath the paper in two rooms!

Oh wow @Bestcatmum You've got Black Phillip in your house!

Coxspurplepippin · 13/01/2023 11:46

Love Halloween house. I'd be way to clumsy for 1/24 scale.

My house is too small for full size dollshouses so I make 1:24, 1:48 and 1:44.

Sunnysal · 13/01/2023 11:56

There are several dolls house magazines I spend hours looking at Readily. Huge time wasting rabbit hole.

RuthW · 13/01/2023 12:15

I was given one for my 50th birthday, a shop.

It's now a craft shop. Not finished but I love it.

Giggorata · 13/01/2023 12:32

Fab work, @Bestcatmum, love the floor, with its Circle!

TugboatAnnie · 13/01/2023 13:29

Would anyone be interested in these free papers? My dad used to renovate dolls' houses and these are just hanging around. There's flooring, brick, roof tiles and various wallpaper some textured. About 9 sheets in all. PM me if you'd like them.
