Does anyone have a dolls house? As a hobby?

I'm considering it and wanted to know if there were any enthusiasts out there

I have a lovely set of apothecary drawers on my now spare room and keep envisaging a genuine Edwardian or Victorian dolls house sat on it and then spending time sourcing period bits and pieces for it

Anyway, that's the current day dream and I wondered if anyone had a similar interest?

Can I ask the experts please? Would these tiles work in the kitchen of an Edwardian house?

@ChocChipOwl Red door looking good. Not sure about red quarry tiles could be the co!our on screen?know they were prevalent in Victorian houses. An aunt of mine lived in an Edwardian semi in the midlands kitchen tiles were softer terracotta.

Maybe someone on here has more knowledge.

ChocChipOwl · 21/01/2023 19:05

Thank you @KeziaOAP . I'm thinking no to that flooring now

Todays purchase was a roast chicken! From 1900

@ChocChipOwl like the sound of roast chicken.

Been sorting my wardrobe out found another box of dolls house bits I'd forgotten about including fabric for curtains and bedding. Going to be busy.......😄

ChocChipOwl · 21/01/2023 19:15

@KeziaOAP ooh sounds lovely. It crossed my mind to find some vintage liberty fabrics to makes some mini cushions.

And then I remembered that I can barely make a sandwich

@ChocChipOwl you can buy scrap packs of liberty fabrics really cheap on eBay! I used to get them when I made my friends cushions/duvets!

pippapoo62 · 22/01/2023 13:51

I always wanted to furnish a dolls house and a few years ago this house came upon eBay ; I won it at £89.00 and when I collected it the seller gave me the basement free .It has taken a lot of time and money and its still has not been finished yet.

@pippapoo62 your house is amazing and what a bargain!

@ChocChipOwl with regard to your Triang house, have you found a new owner yet? I bet someone would love to restore it, in a 1940's/50's theme.

I have done a lot of research into making my own croft dolls house. I will use das clay on in internal and external walls, using a textured roller to give a stone effect. My croft house will be a bungalow with one a long room downstairs with a staircase leading to the loft rooms. The roof will be thatched. I am just not sure about the dimensions of a 1\12 scale house. What is the height of a typical room?

ChocChipOwl · 22/01/2023 17:11

@PollyAmour not a peep! It's such a solid house too - everything very robust. It deserves to be restored

ChocChipOwl · 22/01/2023 17:14

Would anyone happen to know if the Sid Cooke jubilee house is 1:12 scale?

OP posts:
Giggorata · 22/01/2023 17:54

All the ones that I have seen are.
The people on the Doll's Houses Past and Present forum will know for certain.

TrashyPanda · 22/01/2023 23:29

Sid Cooke Jubilee is definitely 1/12.

it’s unusual to find a modern (as in made in the last 40 or so years) house that isn’t 1/12, 1/24 or 1/48 scale. Lundry and Triange/Lines Bros were both popular at 1/18 and 1/16, but I can’t think of any current manufacturers that build in those scales.

for the Croft house, if the ceiling is 8 feet in real life, it’s 8 inches in 1/12 scale.

ChocChipOwl · 23/01/2023 09:35

Thanks @TrashyPanda and @Giggorata it is indeed 1:12

Another question - a stupid one probably

I've bought some brick compound and a stencil and ordered some repositionable spray. How on earth do you do the bricks when it's round windows / pointy bits? I can see how it's easy in a complete block but bit puzzled about how you go round smaller areas!

OP posts:
QueueEtwo · 28/01/2023 07:29

How are you getting on Choc?

ChocChipOwl · 28/01/2023 19:18

Ooh good thanks @QueueEtwo

I've painted half of the outside with a limestone miniature stone paint after a disaster with brick stuff

And I've bought a few antique bits. Err to the point where I do need to stop for a while now as, funnily enough, antique dolls house pieces don't come cheap

I've got a beautiful red silk chaise from 1900, a schneegus La Tresorerie desk, a peach pit basket and err more

QueueEtwo · 05/02/2023 10:08

They all sound lovely!

Looking forward to seeing some photos of your progress!

TangledWebOfDeception · 05/02/2023 15:09

@ChocChipOwl Pics of the antique bits, please*?!!

*Have already spent my February fripperies fund so shall now turn to vicarious thrills!

PollyAmour · 05/02/2023 20:09

Photos please @ChocChipOwl

I'm still trying to persuade myself I don't want to buy your rejected Triang house to go with my current Triang house. I have visions of having a miniature street of restored 1940's Triang houses, but then I'd need a corner shop and a pub and then I'd need an actual new house to have a designated dolls house room.

ChocChipOwl · 05/02/2023 20:24

@PollyAmour my husband put it in his car today to take to the tip as we were clearing the garage a little.

Err no pal! I whipped it straight back because I am not binning an 84 year old house! It needs some love if you're offering!

Stand by for my little antiques pics
