Does anyone have a dolls house? As a hobby?

I'm considering it and wanted to know if there were any enthusiasts out there

I have a lovely set of apothecary drawers on my now spare room and keep envisaging a genuine Edwardian or Victorian dolls house sat on it and then spending time sourcing period bits and pieces for it

Anyway, that's the current day dream and I wondered if anyone had a similar interest?

@PollyAmour ok I'll do my best to get it right! Am I measuring from floor to top of roof?

I can't find my exact house yet but I've found relatively close so I can see what the original paintwork might look like

So I think the black at the top and the green by the windows is original. So I'll restore to red brick paint at the bottom and cream at the top

I'm into miniatures - mainly room boxes or the smaller scales, due to a lack to space - but it's a lovely hobby. As creative as you want it to be with a very friendly and supportive community.

I have a Dolls House Emporium Georgian dolls house. It is mainly wired but I wanted to add some more lights and a bulb for inside a fire. I then discovered that you can get battery powered lights! I have quite a few now. I am not very handy. My walls and floors are decorated with sticky back plastic. I buy curtains ready made up and rugs. My recent additions are some memorabilia relating to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. It's fun buying all the accessories for each room. I also have the basement waiting to be assembled. I have had it for 20 years!

ChocChipOwl · 12/01/2023 19:31

I've sorted out all the bits and pieces that came with it and will eBay them. It's clear that they're 60s/ 70s

However there were three pieces in the shoebox that I've put to one side as I think they're much older

Will attach pics below - thoughts?

Managed to prise this open! Was stuck almost solid. The top lifts too and has a brass stand that props up the top of the piano. This is VERY stiff though so can't get it out yet

Eek! Exciting! I'm sure this is older than the 60s

I'll stop going on now!

No but I'd love one if I had the space. The tiny furniture is just enchanting.

That's the table and chairs I've got and the kitchen unit but without the sink. I've kept them since I was a child. I also realise I still have the radiogram I linked to above. I just need the house for them now.

We don't have the same crm as mine is 1/12 scale, mine is from the dolls house emporium discontinued architecture collection. I've put on a picture but it's very rough

This is my other house, I love this one, it needs refreshing now, getting a bit tatty round the edges but don't think I can keep them both

Sweet house! Really glad you found one - it’s a fab hobby. Ah yes, some of your furniture is clearly older - the piano is sweet, and the long stool is its matching piano stool.
There are also a few older bits in the general furniture you pictured. Will try to point them out to you!

ChocChipOwl · 12/01/2023 21:28

@Minimoan thank you! I did wonder if the stool was for the piano. It has metal handles

And yes please - would love to know any rough dates

Apologies if someone has already posted this but Lauren Child (Charlie and Lola) is a big dolls house person. I remember hearing her on Radio 4. Here's a link to one article but if your Google there's lots. It's so beautiful.

I wonder if the wooden wardrobe is older … looks like it may be an older homemade one? The little dressing table with the long central ‘mirror’ also looks older - does the paint match the wardrobe? And looks like there is possibly a matching bedside table too (near the wardrobe)?

Glendaruel · 12/01/2023 21:44

It might be worth going to a show like miniaturia to get a good idea of what's on market. if you do, go with a budget of you can get carried away easily. I have dolls houses in 1/12th, 1/24th and 1/48th. 1/12th takes up quite but of space, 1/48th can be fiddly. I like petite properties who do kits. Kits are cheaper but depends if you like craft or just want to buy bits. There are dolls house magazines out there. Some stuff is mass produced in china. These days I prefer a smaller property and to buy better quality pieces when I can afford them.

Minimoan · 12/01/2023 21:46

The little blue bowl and contents is also older …

Thank you so much @Minimoan that's really helpful

I'll fish those bits out and pop to one side. And yes, the wardrobe and mirror and bedside table do match! You're right

It's just the house I can't identify yet. Looked through so many and mine isn't listed anywhere that I've found yet.

I’ve found your house!

Minimoan · 12/01/2023 22:11

It is thought to be a Triang … it’s on the DHP&P database. The door and the large space beside on your house match, as does the internal frame around the space. I suspect the space next to the front door on the 24A was a garage?

@Minimoan you're so good! I missed it as was thrown by the lack of garage!

Not me, but my last boss was really into that.

sophs29 · 12/01/2023 22:23

I'm obsessed with anything miniature! I had a dolls house when I was younger and I didn't appreciate it then like I would if I had it now!

I used to be a seamstress so I make little duvets and cushions etc for a few friends who own dolls houses and for my niece! I really want to crochet a tiny granny square blanket but haven't got round to it yet! It will be a labour of love and I don't really have a use for it 😭😂

Minimoan · 12/01/2023 22:31

My pleasure - it's fun for me!!
Gamages was a posh department store on Oxford Street - Triang made houses for them, which were then sold under Gamages own label.

@Minimoan it's lots of fun and I'd totally scrolled past that one. Would never have looked at it as I was fixed on certain identifiers

It shows me how to paint it though so that's really helpful. I can't work out what's round the bottom of it. I initially thought flowers but could be mould 😀
