I've only very recently started a jigsaw and so far I'm really enjoying it! I'm sick fed up of aimlessly scrolling on my phone every evening until bedtime. I feel like I'm wasting so much time! I'm a reader but a few chapters at a time is my limit before my mind starts to wonder or I find myself skim reading, even when I'm really enjoying the book this happens. Also in the evenings I used to cross stitch and I had started to learn how to crochet ( very basic level ) and all of this has fallen to the side in favour at staring at a screen.

So this year I've decided to make more of an effort to get back into these hobbies and thats when I decided to try jigsaws.

I got my first jigsaw from the charity shop last week for £1.50 ( love a bargain ) its a garden bird scene with a watering can, various flowers and some insects ( 1000 piece ) not sure if that was a bit adventurous 😂I'm around halfway and I have to admit I'm thoroughly enjoying the challenge! It's very satisfying watching it come together slowly.

I've got another charity shop find lined up to do next its a 500 piece old fashioned greengrocers.

So if anyone would like to chat please feel free 🙂

I do jigsaw after a brain bleed / stroke meant I couldn't craft....I take a photo of completed ones before I break them up.

Luckingfovely · 13/01/2023 21:25

I find it totally relaxing, almost meditative. If I get into it, I can lose so much time, in such a relaxed manner. I've just started this one, and it's harder than I expected!

Done 👏 I bought it ten days ago. Haven't done it every night but would say I did it over maybe 7 evenings. I'm actually really proud of myself ( sad I know )

That's lovely OP. Have you got another one lined up?

Notplayingball · 14/01/2023 20:59

Have started Starry Night Van Gogh 1500 piece jigsaw. It's a tough one but won't give up.

Agree it's a great way to relax.

thefinaltwist, very nice!

I did this one recently which was a lot of fun - 101 hidden book titles in the images to find.

I've always tried to do at least one jigsaw every Christmas since I was a kid.

It's hard finding artwork I like but I stumbled across Elena Essex puzzles recently and they are right up my street. No dust and fit together well too.

I completed the Woodland Magic (mushroom) one and really enjoyed it. Just the right amount of colours etc. Ordered another now. Is it just me or have puzzles become really expensive now?!

There's a really beautiful Rainbow Bird Paradise one by ElenaEssex but it's round and won't fit on my board. I would love one of those tilting jigsaw tables 😍

PoseyFlump · 15/01/2023 07:44

Can anyone recommend any good podcasts to listen to while 'jigsawing' please?!

Coxspurplepippin · 15/01/2023 07:58

BillStickersIsInnocent, lots of lovely detail in that one.

PoseyFlump - charity shops....... I've had some lovely jigsaws out of charity shops. They've been £1.99 (where we live) to £4 (posh market town) for 1000 piece ones, and I think I've only ever had two over the years that have had a piece missing.
I listen to R4 Sounds, lots of dramas, podcasts etc on there. I'm looking forward to the 'Obsessed with Happy Valley ' podcast but we haven't watched the drama yet so will have to wait! There's all sorts of good drama on Sounds at the moment, Hilary Mantel, Graham Greene, a lovely adaptation of The Pallusets.

Just found this thread and have saved it for everyone suggestions. I love a jigsaw and it's essential at Christmas but have one on the go quite a lot of the time. With young kids I nearly always end at the end with a piece or two missing and have to hunt under sofa cushions to find it. I get most from charity shops or passed to me by others but have bought some from George's of Whitstable recently.

I tend to go for pretty pictures although when I've then passed them onto my dad to do, he grumbles if they are the type where all pieces are the same shape. I didn't even notice as tend to sort/search by colour.

I was cleaning out cupboards and found this jigsaw which I'm currently doing and it's the hardest I've ever done given it's double sided with the same picture and rotated 90°. No idea who passed it to me as I wouldn't have bought this design but now feel I have to complete it!

Thank you @Coxspurplepippin I'll have a look at R4 Sounds! And I'll try and remember to have a look in charity shops. It might just be my local ones but they seem to sell their best stuff online and the leftovers go in the shop!

For over thirty years I've always completed a jigsaw in the same way. Edge pieces first then rummage through the box picking out bits here and there until it all comes together.

I'm going rogue today! I'm going to try and start at one corner and see if I can build it like that (or until I run out of patience 😂)

Thanks @thefinaltwist for starting this thread. I've read through all the posts and made a note of all the suggestions for future puzzles!

Coxspurplepippin · 15/01/2023 09:02

PoseyFlump funnily we were watching an old episode of 'Big Bang Theory' yesterday, featuring a jigsaw. Unsurprisingly, Sheldon is an edges first type, but Penny went totally rogue......

thefinaltwist · 15/01/2023 09:19

I listen to true crime podcasts on the BBC sounds app

Oooh love a true crime... what's you're top three? @thefinaltwist

PoseyFlump · 15/01/2023 09:40

I've sat and separated all the colours out for my 'rogue' experiment but better stop now to walk the old dogs so I can crack on later while they sleep!

I'm doing Sunset Valley by Elena Essex.

WhereIsMyRollingPin · 15/01/2023 11:49

A jigsaw fan here. I get most of them from charity shops, make them and take them back. Only once has a piece been missing.

I like a lot of detail, not too much sky, and especially like circular ones. When I buy them they are often Galison which have good modern designs.

I can't do links but if anyone likes cats search for Rosina Wachteister puzzles made by Heye. I like her artwork and am slowly building a collection of her puzzles.

Our young adult DC think they don't like puzzles but if there's one on the go when they visit they always do some 🙂

@PoseyFlump

The most recent one were The Cruelty - A Child Unclaimed and The Boy In The Woods. I'm about to start Fairy Meadow

This is the one that I am doing. I have about 75 pieces left that all look the same. It's my mission to finish it tomorrow.
