Anyone like to chat about jigsaws?

I've only very recently started a jigsaw and so far I'm really enjoying it! I'm sick fed up of aimlessly scrolling on my phone every evening until bedtime. I feel like I'm wasting so much time! I'm a reader but a few chapters at a time is my limit before my mind starts to wonder or I find myself skim reading, even when I'm really enjoying the book this happens. Also in the evenings I used to cross stitch and I had started to learn how to crochet ( very basic level ) and all of this has fallen to the side in favour at staring at a screen.

So this year I've decided to make more of an effort to get back into these hobbies and thats when I decided to try jigsaws.

I got my first jigsaw from the charity shop last week for £1.50 ( love a bargain ) its a garden bird scene with a watering can, various flowers and some insects ( 1000 piece ) not sure if that was a bit adventurous 😂I'm around halfway and I have to admit I'm thoroughly enjoying the challenge! It's very satisfying watching it come together slowly.

I've got another charity shop find lined up to do next its a 500 piece old fashioned greengrocers.

So if anyone would like to chat please feel free 🙂

I'm picky as well. I've been given 3 over the years that have gone in a cupboard for a while then to a charity shop unopened. Hate being given books or puzzles. They are too personal, I want to pick my own.

AuntieMarys · 08/01/2023 08:56

I did about 50 in lockdown having never done them before. I will never do another one.

Mol1628 · 08/01/2023 08:59

Currently working on a 1000 piece Hornby train jigsaw that I found in a charity shop.

we have a porta puzzle so we can just put it away when we’ve had enough as we struggle for time.

My phone has also ruined my attention span and I do struggle but it does feel refreshing not to be stuck on a screen for a bit.

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross thank you for my new obsession! Grin

I love a puzzle. 1000 pieces, a glass of something and radio 4 on. Bliss.

I'm not fussy about what I do, but I prefer big, difficult stretches of sky or ocean or similar - I find that if there are too many details in the picture you can just slot every piece in and they're done too quickly.

Limer · 08/01/2023 09:03

I love jigsaws. Great to have one on the go during Christmas, visitors can't help wandering over and putting in a few pieces.

Top-quality leisure time for me is doing a jigsaw while listening to music/podcasts.

I love jigsaws and feel a bit odd if I don't have one on the go!

Over lockdown I discovered this company, Cloudberries, who do the most amazing jigsaws I have ever seen. I have a flagged search on eBay and now have nearly 30 of the designs, all bought second-hand. They are so interesting and intricate.

Be warned: the Shells jigsaw is possibly the most evil creation known to man.

Others that I have found recently and highly approve of are:

elenaessex.com/shop/

And

eeboo.com/collections/puzzles

I am still working on the 3D Cloudberries Christmas puzzle - such a tough one! (I sort
of glossed over the fact it was 3D when I ordered it…) www.cloudberries.co.uk/product/christmas-3d-jigsaw-puzzle-1000-pieces/

I love the magic jigsaw app on my iPad. Probably heresy to most but it means no lost pieces, no storage problems (or dog stealing issues!) and I can make jigsaws out of my own photos. Fab.

Boring 😏

Agree. I'd find them a pointless waste of my time, reassembling a pre printed picture. There's no skill in it or point.

My elderly grandmother loves them she says they keep her mind active along with her daily crossword (I don't mind a crossword).

My mother's friend runs a residential home and they have stacks of them for the residents. I buy a jigsaw for her if ever I spot an interesting one somewhere.

fairislecable · 08/01/2023 09:07

I love Wentworth puzzles as they are made of wood and laser cut. This gives a really good tactile feel and an audible click on the table as each piece is put in place. They also have little whimsy pieces in them.

This is the last one I did www.wentworthpuzzles.com/wooden-jigsaw-puzzles/the-puzzle-that-will-drive-you-round-the-bend .

I also have others which are very difficult due to the shapes.

I have done ilthem in the past but no room in this plac really

I like min 1000 piece ones and I like ravensburg* pieces

I don't like soft thing pieces they have to be a certain kind

*not sure if spelt correctly

I have a board (from the builders merchants) that slides under the sofa.

I LOVE a puzzle. I go though phases, usually in the winter. I am loyal to Ravensburger, but thanks for the "Life of" recommendation above, I like those.

I was given this for Xmas. I usually do 1000 and this looks very easy so won't take me long.

I find it relaxing. That's the point.

TheOrigRights · 08/01/2023 09:13

This is the sort of image I like. I have loads though, including an unopened one my late Mum had. That's special.
Sorry - something's up with attaching photos using the app

I enjoy a jigsaw but I have no patience over 500 pieces. I'm very methodical, I make sets of colours & then sets of shapes to make it easier. Does anyone else do this?

We always start a big one on New Years Day. We set it up on the dining table and everyone is free to sit for a few minutes or a few hours and add a bit. It's a great way to get teens away from their devices, into the communal space, and to share idle chit-chat with them without them realising. Every year they groan when the puzzle comes out, two nights later they're addicted.
Also a great way to get through this dark and depressing time of year.
We don't entertain during Jan and Feb so it's no hassle having the big table out of use.

Ah I love this.

They're not usually my kind of thing but last and this year, I bought some 1000 piece Christmas ones.

The idea was for me and kids to do it together but they weren’t really interested.

Near the end, I got really annoyed when they tried to help me when I was nearly finished 🤣

I absolutely love doing jigsaws but am quite particular about what I choose - at the moment, I’m working my way through a number from this series: Laurence King publishing. I don’t like big stretches of the same colour, like sky, etc, so like a jigsaw with lots going on over the whole picture.

I like these ones too! I did the Shakespeare one in lockdown and have Jane Austen in the cupboard for a rainy day.

AlwaysBelieveInYourSoul · 08/01/2023 09:19

I'm doing this 1000 piece Angela Harding. I'm finding it very hard, in fact v frustrating at times tbh. But I AM going to finish it. Even the "easy" bits were hard- the red/ brown animals. The rest of it is a killer- very restricted colour palette- and the colours aren't precisely matched to the guide picture. Fewer than 10 pieces an hour!!!!
I do one or two a year. This was a present but otherwise I pick them up cheaply and borrow/ swop with friends or family. I do them on the dining room table which is used for every meal so we just have to be careful putting plates on top of it etc.

Oh wow didn't expect so many replies. Jigsaws with big blocks of colours fill me with fear

Exactly. Good for the brain and a break from screen time is why I like doing them.

ohyouknowwhatshername · 08/01/2023 09:24

I love a jigsaw. I got a new one for Christmas which is a gorgeous picture of a tea shop. Lots of lovely teapots and cups on the shelf, cakes with labels, people sitting at tables enjoying their afternoon tea. I've got a meeting at my house this week so need my dining table - but after that, I can start it. I like to do jigsaws in the evening, I see it as my 'mindfulness' before going to bed.

thefinaltwist · 08/01/2023 09:25

galliton

I am doing it on a board but planned just to dismantle it and redonate it to charity * *
