Anyone like to chat about jigsaws?

I've only very recently started a jigsaw and so far I'm really enjoying it! I'm sick fed up of aimlessly scrolling on my phone every evening until bedtime. I feel like I'm wasting so much time! I'm a reader but a few chapters at a time is my limit before my mind starts to wonder or I find myself skim reading, even when I'm really enjoying the book this happens. Also in the evenings I used to cross stitch and I had started to learn how to crochet ( very basic level ) and all of this has fallen to the side in favour at staring at a screen.

So this year I've decided to make more of an effort to get back into these hobbies and thats when I decided to try jigsaws.

I got my first jigsaw from the charity shop last week for £1.50 ( love a bargain ) its a garden bird scene with a watering can, various flowers and some insects ( 1000 piece ) not sure if that was a bit adventurous 😂I'm around halfway and I have to admit I'm thoroughly enjoying the challenge! It's very satisfying watching it come together slowly.

I've got another charity shop find lined up to do next its a 500 piece old fashioned greengrocers.

So if anyone would like to chat please feel free 🙂

And the jigsaw is lovely.

stripeymonster · 16/02/2023 00:11

Just completed this one it was harder than I thought it would be! I often get back or neck ache doing puzzles but it does help me switch off from worrying about other things.

I absolutely love doing jigsaws but am quite particular about what I choose - at the moment, I’m working my way through a number from this series: Laurence King publishing. I don’t like big stretches of the same colour, like sky, etc, so like a jigsaw with lots going on over the whole picture.

Absolutely love these ones. The boards are interesting and they’re really good quality.

I recognise that! - I’m sure I’ve done it 😂 Currently working on The World of Charles Dickens from The World of… series and it’s quite challenging. I’ve done most of the river so far to provide a centre to build on but I’m now trying to work my through all the flipping houses 😬

What’s everyone’s approach to doing their jigsaws? I try to do the edges first, obviously, but I had one where the edges were so tricky (all the same colour/pattern) that I began in the middle and worked my way out. But usually, it’s edges first and then I simply place pieces in roughly the right area on the board - my little random collections eventually begin to join together!

TheOrigRights · 16/02/2023 08:25

@stripeymonster I've done that one, and also found it much harder than it looks. It's a piece by piece one. I drew a pencil square on my puzzle board for each section, which helped.

Coxspurplepippin · 16/02/2023 08:57

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross, I do edges first unless there's huge tracts of a single colour, like the sky, then I do as much edge as possible and leave the rest for when there's something to connect to.

thefinaltwist · 16/02/2023 19:41

Always do the edge first

LetUsPrey · 16/02/2023 19:47

Edges first here too. Because that’s the law Grin And no one is allowed to help.

I’ve got a few of the World Of… jigsaws. Love them.

Current jigsaw is Women of Greek Myths. Next one will be the Wimbledon trophies

TheOrigRights · 16/02/2023 20:25

What sort of deviant doesn't do the edges first?! Grin

Sometimes I start with a middle bit if it is distinctive 😱

Pterrydactyl · 16/02/2023 20:53

I usually prefer to do the edges first, but if most of the edge is all the same colour - e.g. if there’s a border all the way around the jigsaw - then I’ll find a distinctive bit somewhere in the middle and work out from there.

Oblongbluebell · 16/02/2023 21:16

Can’t believe I’ve only just found this thread. I’ve just started getting into jigsaws. Like others, I find it really relaxing, it’s a break from screen time and gives me time to think or listen to something.

I’ll have to get that jigsaw roll I’ve had my eye on….

thefinaltwist · 19/02/2023 19:15

Hit a brick wall with my latest jigsaw. Been ill the past couple of weeks with covid and I've just not had the energy to even bother with it. Hoping I can get back into this week

How big is the jigsaw? How far have you got with it?

TheOrigRights · 20/02/2023 07:40

This was a Christmas present. Only 500 pieces, very, very easy but a lot of fun to do.

@OhFFS! Where did you get the Nightmare before Christmas puzzle? It looks great.

Ooh, that looks great! That would be a nice one to do with my daughter. Where is it from please?

I don't know where my friend got it, but google shows you can get it from the
National Gallery

We had a giggle when looking at it for the first time: Marie Curie, Malala, Rose Park, Gloria Estefan...Gloria Estefan?!
I mean, she's fab and all, but I wouldn't put her in the top 16 feminists!
nb it's actually Gloria Steinem

ohyouknowwhatshername · 20/02/2023 16:10

Ha ha, yes!
Thank you x

Just doing a Dracula one at the moment. It’s in portrait which feels very odd!

I’ve done that one - I have the Frankenstein one in my to-do pile. Recently did the Dickens one which was bloody difficult (like his books 😂)

BillStickersIsInnocent · 16/04/2023 19:39

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross It was a toss up between the two - I bought it in Whitby on holiday so thought I’d better stick with Dracula! I’ve done the Dickens one which I really enjoyed.

TheOrigRights · 21/04/2023 07:51

Just finished this. I bought it around the jubilee. It's got some lovely detail (Paddington, corgis etc).

PoseyFlump · 21/04/2023 07:58

I've got a jigsaw on the go but I've slowed down a bit recently while I've been distracted with my vegetable seedlings.

I've just heard of Lego flowers (botanical collection) Has anyone tried those?

BillStickersIsInnocent · 21/04/2023 08:08

@PoseyFlump I bought some for my sister and she’s enjoyed doing them. My friend has them on display and they look great.
