Anyone like to chat about jigsaws?

I've only very recently started a jigsaw and so far I'm really enjoying it! I'm sick fed up of aimlessly scrolling on my phone every evening until bedtime. I feel like I'm wasting so much time! I'm a reader but a few chapters at a time is my limit before my mind starts to wonder or I find myself skim reading, even when I'm really enjoying the book this happens. Also in the evenings I used to cross stitch and I had started to learn how to crochet ( very basic level ) and all of this has fallen to the side in favour at staring at a screen.

So this year I've decided to make more of an effort to get back into these hobbies and thats when I decided to try jigsaws.

I got my first jigsaw from the charity shop last week for £1.50 ( love a bargain ) its a garden bird scene with a watering can, various flowers and some insects ( 1000 piece ) not sure if that was a bit adventurous 😂I'm around halfway and I have to admit I'm thoroughly enjoying the challenge! It's very satisfying watching it come together slowly.

I've got another charity shop find lined up to do next its a 500 piece old fashioned greengrocers.

So if anyone would like to chat please feel free 🙂

I love a jigsaw. I feel my breathing slow right down and I get totally absorbed. It's so therapeutic. I rarely buy new puzzles as you can pick them up from charity shops or ebay for a couple of quid. My puzzling tends to go in phases where I'll go for weeks with one gathering dust bunnies under the sofa then I'll be manically working my way through one in 3 nights.

I was once in a charity shop when a woman came in to complain that the 1000 piece puzzle she’d bought had a piece missing. She wanted them to either do all the puzzles before selling them or to count the pieces. The two volunteers behind the till looked a bit bemused while I was trying not to kill myself laughing behind a stand of books.

I currently have a Colin Thompson on the go. Have done one already. Just starting the second.

@RafaistheKingofClay yes, people are bonkers aren't they!!

some charity shops do count the pieces which tells you there are 1000 pieces in the box, what it doesn't tell you is if they're from that particulate puzzle!! It doesn't happen as often with adult puzzles, but it does still happen.

in others staff or volunteers do the puzzles first before it goes on sale.

others just 'wing it' & sell 'as is'. It's a crazy risky world we live in 😂😂🤣🤣

This is the one I have on the go. Well, I say on the go, I did edges and then got frustrated and stuck. It's been rolled up in my puzzle mat for a long time so I got it out again yesterday. I'm sure I did more of it than what was on the mat 🤔 As usual, the cats decided they want to help so I ended up putting it away again. I need a proper board to work on before I tackle it again.

@RumNotRun fantastic!
If you don’t mind me asking where did you get ank morpork map jigsaw from?

@Xmasfairy86 great idea!

newtb · 09/01/2023 09:14

I grew up doing them with my mother and aunt. We even laid the dining table over them - big sheets of thin card under the tablecloth.
When one was finished, the pieces were numbered on the back. Next time, if you got stuck you could work out roughly where the piece went.

ILoveYouMoreTheEnd · 09/01/2023 10:00

I'd love to start doing jigsaws again, we have 4 large brashy in your face dogs and a small house though lol. I'd need to invest in a roll mat for sure and put myself in a dog crate for peace. Thank you for this post, there's a little bric a brac shop in the next village I will visit to see what they have. Do libraries lend out jigsaws?

mixedrecycling · 09/01/2023 10:20

I think some libraries do - I know one jigsaw fanatic offer her services to local charity shops to check any puzzles they got donated were complete! Win/win, they got to know that any puzzle they sold was complete, she got an endless supply of jigsaws!

But did have to commit to doing them quite quickly, so no use if you're like me and do a bit, leave it for weeks, do a bit more.

I think it was from Discworld Emporium, but I've just had a look and they don't have it anymore. They do have lots of other jigsaws though that look more achievable! I may get one of those to keep me going.

OhFFS! · 09/01/2023 20:00

I love jigsaws and have a lot of them. I got obsessed during lockdown. Currently working on the Lego one that is just mini figure heads. So many pieces look the same.

Workerbeep · 09/01/2023 20:18

@RumNotRun thanks, that makes sense. Discworld Emporium is fab isn’t it. I have quite a few of the discworld jigsaws but don’t have that one. Better hold on to it! It’s will be a collectors’ item now.

Just completed a christmas village scene 1000 pieces which I got for £4 when a shop was closing down, now onto a pretty farm type scene, also 1000 and also reduced because the shop was relocating. I dont tend to do them in the summer though as for me it is more a winter pastime.

I am doing a Christmas one at the moment and must have knocked two pieces onto the floor yesterday. The dog tried them and decided after a bit of a chew that they weren’t biscuits! I now have two very chewed pieces.

AllotmentTime · 12/01/2023 07:52

I’m doing this one at the moment and it’s driving me absolutely mad

It’s one of those less well made ones where pieces can very plausibly fit in the wrong place. And with an almost entirely black colour palette, that’s dangerous!

I love doing film/tv ones, I got a new Hobbit one for Christmas which will be my reward when I’ve finally defeated the Dementors.
