Views on Rishi Sunak?

My view is he seems to be an incredibly weak and passive Prime Minister who is missing in action while the country faces crisis after crisis. We could have a cardboard cut out as Prime Minister and I doubt we would notice much difference.

Couldn't care less about his wife or the ND stuff, other than a conflict of interest, Fixed Penalty Notice - water under the bridge now but it does show he is a hypocrite, aren't they all.

He was a very hard core Brexitier and signed up to all the ERG stuff.
He is from the right of the party, that is where he is from, anti strike laws, refusing to even talk? thats extreme, even Thatcher never went that far.

I don't know what Tory policies are in Government, let alone Sunaks, what he said today was a wishlist, most would agree with all he said but he hasn't said the hows - he needs to carry NHS staff with him, he wont even talk.

Starmer doesn't need policies now, Tories would only pinch them, but he will soon as we get toward the next GE and the spotlight will shift.

Be good to see what KS has to say tomo.

But it does worry me when Labour can't tell women do exist though. It worries me enough that it puts me off to vote for them too!

Has anyone said what FPN is yet? I’m intrigued and can’t work it out.

Fixed penalty notice I think.

He’s a bit of a mixed bag imo yes Brexit but also spending to lower incomes in targeted way. Often doing cash payments, another £900 announced recently.

The thing is people say Brexit was part of why the last election went as it did so it was a vote winner. Brexit is primarily an immigration issue (if you look at Blair’s report it details why people voted as they did). Polls show small boats issue isn’t ok, but skilled workers are ok. Voters don’t see some of it as extreme.

Then you have Starmer not touching the SM or CU - which imo is a missed opportunity for U.K. - because he probably also doesn’t want to lose the Brexit voter.

On strikes - if he holds and inflation falls it’s far easier to match with reasonable pay say if it’s at 5%

It may not be enough, everyone’s predicting a Labour win so we’ll see.

Suella Braverman. Enough said.

I listen to Radio 4 and Times radio and it was discussed on there but google gives this blurb from The Times

6 Dec 2022 — Sir Keir Starmer's plans for an elected second chamber risk US-style “gridlock” and should not be a priority, Lord Blunkett ...

Anyway have a read around if you want to know more

Thank you @MarshaBradyo for clarifying that no one has suggest a US style system to replace the House of Lords.

He will need to find a lot of maths teachers… schools are failing to recruit enough as it is! Many schools have non specialist teachers as it is. It’s a shit show.

Luckily the Prime Minister believes in market forces, so if there is a shortage of maths teachers then he will ensure their pay increases to a point where the shortage no longer exists, as he has done with other public sector professions where there is a shortage of staff.

How did you reach that conclusion? It says US style gridlock in part I quoted…

How are you reading the opposite

Luckily I learnt earlier in this thread that Rishi like Boris knows what a woman is, although I don't think anyone was able to clarify whether Rishi like Boris knows this because of such extensive experience of woman. Maybe you can help with that?
Did you know Keir had a beer?

I'm hoping this is hugely sarcastic 🫣

I reached that conclusion very easily.
You replied demonstrateing that you had failed to find any evidence of Keir Starmer, Gordon Brown or anyone else suggesting a US style system.
What you replied with was some speculation.

Not at all. As a well educated economist with at least a few months experience gambling with other people's money I am certain that Rishi is a fan of market forces and will employ those principles in this case.

Not at all, if someone is attacking it for US style gridlock then it’s an issue whether you’ve been listening to people on it or not.

GuyFawkesDay · 04/01/2023 22:17

Marvellous, we teachers will look forward to the pay rise we deserve then 👏

Twillow · 04/01/2023 22:18

Out of his depth and surprisingly weak and ineffectual considering he seemed a reasonable chancellor - maybe that was just in the face of the rest of the bumbling cabinet and PM at the time. But the mess he has inherited is too great for anyone to solve at this point. I honestly don't know where we go from here but the next general election will be interesting.

So who suggested a US style system?
Surely that is a simple question to answer? Did Keir Starmer, did Gordon Brown, or did someone unrelated to current Labour party policy speculate about it?
Surely a simple enough quesiton to answer.

GPTec1 · 04/01/2023 22:18

Then you have Starmer not touching the SM or CU - which imo is a missed opportunity for U.K. - because he probably also doesn’t want to lose the Brexit voter

For Sunak, its ideology, for Starmer, its about media headlines, see the difference? Starmer is still a remainer.

On strikes - if he holds and inflation falls it’s far easier to match with reasonable pay say if it’s at 5%

Inflation is at 10/12% ? the rate prices have risen and what people are paying?
Inflation drops to 5%, people are still paying that 10/12% increase, prices haven't dropped.

Why would pay demands be reduced?

In any case, falls in inflation are many months away, this needs resolving now, NHS workers aren't going to back down and he cannot achieve his waiting list and AE targets with no staff.

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/01/2023 22:19

And the nurses. Sunaks government is doing an amazing job there.

Don't forget that Rishi is an economic genius and so knows that paying working people more leads to them spending more boosting the economy, whereas ensuring his wife and similarly rich people get richer means that more moeny is stashed offshore doing nothing for the economy.

MarshaBradyo · 04/01/2023 22:23

Is that better or worse? Sticking to Brexit when you don’t even believe in it and missing the opportunity sounds weaker to me. At least have someone who thinks there’s a reason for it or if you don’t sense the opportunity to do something bolder eg SM / CU

Why would pay demands be reduced?

It’s pretty much the plan atm, unless it changes due to pressure, wait inflation to drop and offer closer to new rate

LuluBlakey1 · 04/01/2023 22:25

I forget he is PM. He's the invisible man. Can't tell you anything much about him as PM. No idea what his vision is- I can guess- or his plans for the future to tackle our biggest issues and help people earning under £30,000 gross.
He seems better as a personally than either Johnson or Truss but as a politician I have seen nothing that impresses me.

@MarshaBradyo why should nurses have a real terms pay cut?
How will that help the Prime Ministers plans to reduce hospital waiting times?

Vallmo47 · 04/01/2023 22:31

Agreed Op.
I’m SO ashamed.

paintitallover · 04/01/2023 22:43

He seems a wish characterless, but at least he isn't that con artist Johnson.

I think perhaps Sunak has seen how successful Starmer is and has decided to try and make Starmer appear to be the life and soul of the party.

Blossomtoes · 04/01/2023 22:55

Why would pay demands be reduced?

They wouldn’t. The current inflation has to be covered, it’s not going to go away just because the can’s been kicked down the road.
