Views on Rishi Sunak?

My view is he seems to be an incredibly weak and passive Prime Minister who is missing in action while the country faces crisis after crisis. We could have a cardboard cut out as Prime Minister and I doubt we would notice much difference.

I would rather a PM that works behind the scenes. I don’t care how often we see him out and about as long as he is working closely with his cabinet and making changes that benefit our country and the people who live here. Only time will tell.

Yeh me too. I don’t want show. I’ll wait and see if the plan re inflation works out and it drops then new pay deals offered. Hopefully sticking to dealing with inflation as priority not public pressure.

BradfordGirl · 04/01/2023 13:59

Works behind the scenes is making me laugh. Doing what exactly!!

And Rishi Sunak shows no real life understanding of the economy. We need a boost to high quality manufacturing and a plan to save our car industry. Sunak just said it is up to the car industry to invest. Although that is true, he seems extremely unconcerned about their future demise and the contraction even more of our manufacturing sector. Instead her and others mouth about a green economy, I suspect without understanding what they are talking about.

@MarshaBradyo What is the plan re inflation?
You mean the one to support high wage increases to the well off and to refuse them to ordinary public sector workers?

Kindof cute 😚

MarshaBradyo · 04/01/2023 14:01

OBR have it dropping this year. If that happens it will help with strikes and a lot more.

He does have a first from Oxford in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. They don't generally hand those out without being at least semi-economically-literate.

Small man with small mind

Out of interest who do you like?

Zwicky · 04/01/2023 14:05

That maths BS this morning sums up he truly out of touch he is

Exactly.
Build some social housing, sort out health and social care, tackle the greedy private sector mismanaging public services, go after the big tax dodgers and the scammers who stole the bounce back loans, shake up the police service - we need actual trained detectives not “bobbies on the beat” soundbites while the whole force seems to be chock full of misogynists and “inclusion officers” (in some cases misogynist inclusion officers). We have a massive wealth inequality problem which is fuelling a lot of other issues. Wittering on about extra maths for the 60% of people who have already met the expected standards in maths without even glancing at why 40% don’t reach the expected standard after 11 years of compulsory education is just a headline grabbing distraction. I’m not anti-maths but you won’t make a nation of mathematicians by having a few extra hours a week for another 60 odd weeks.

How can you possibly say that a man with his background has a small mind? You may disagree with him, but come on.

cassiatwenty · 04/01/2023 14:06

@Everanewbie Well, that's not bad. Cute and went to Oxford. Why do people make all those rat jokes? 😅

SommerTen · 04/01/2023 14:06

He's got the job he wanted now he's resting on his laurels.

BradfordGirl · 04/01/2023 14:13

@Everanewbie He might understand about Adam Smiths economic theory and the impact of Trumpism on the economy, but he shows zero understanding of how to create a high productivity economy. He is slightly more in touch with economics than Liz Truss, but that is a low bar. So he does understand the need to control inflation before considering tax cuts.
But he also seems to think that reducing employee rights and boosting the gig economy will improve productivity. It will not. It is boosting a low wage low productivity economy.
Rishi Sunak can't even get basic economic realities right, so he is not going to deliver anything helpful. He is simply less bad than Liz Truss.

QueenCoconut · 04/01/2023 14:14

He’s been talking for over 10 minutes now, no specifics. We need to change our mindset and “reject pessimism”.
All with a smile on his face as if there’s no national crisis.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 04/01/2023 14:20

I saw a headline about “the Prime Minister” the other day and I couldn’t remember who that was. Took me a minute or two. Has he actually done anything yet?

BradfordGirl · 04/01/2023 14:20

@QueenCoconut I think either he does not know what to do, or he simply does not care so ignoring what needs to be done.

Everanewbie · 04/01/2023 14:22

How do you go about creating a high productivity economy, @BradfordGirl ? I'm curious to know how a Wednesday afternoon mumsnet poster understands how we reach our nirvana, when an Oxford Economics graduate, hedge fund manager, chancellor of the exchequer and prime minister just can't grasp it?

I'm sure you're better than this, but "we don't make anyfink anymore" pub bore arguments are just that.

schratching · 04/01/2023 14:26

@JellyBabiesSaveLives same 😂 if I banged my head and the paramedics came to save me 10 days later, I'd have to pause and think who the prime minister was

MarshaBradyo · 04/01/2023 14:28

I’m listening to him. I actually hope he can do the things he says

BradfordGirl · 04/01/2023 14:33

@Everanewbie Is the personal abuse really necessary?

  1. Improved infrastructure, especially transport but also connectivity. The UK has poor internet speeds for connectivity.
  2. Subsidise development of new technology
  3. Improved education and training - we really need proper apprenticeships, especially engineering and biotechnology
  4. Support the development of high tec manufacturing. This is not just about needing to make things. This is one of the sectors with the highest productivity and the greatest positive impact on the wider economy. It is why places like Singapore have a minimum target that manufacturing should contribute to their GDP.
  5. Support the development of existing manufacturing to develop and innovate for the future
  6. Ensure cities and towns have the mix of units and property needed for businesses especially manufacturing and biotechnology
  7. Smaller things as well such as reintroduce the Enterprise Allowance - one thing Thatcher did get right, and support young people to set up their own business.
  8. Understand and support the contribution cultural sector can play especially to domestic and international tourism and the role it can play in helping to regenerate neglected geographical areas.
OP posts:
BradfordGirl · 04/01/2023 14:35

@Everanewbie And a hedge fund manager understands the City, but is also I suspect more apt to exaggerate the City's importance over other sectors.

He's shovelling shit because, thanks to 13 years of Tory incompetence, the UK is up to its neck in it. His real goal is to keep us out of bankruptcy until the next GE.

He won't actually fix anything. There are things that I think will worsen in terms of our ights and Women's Rights to single sex spaces will probably go completely. Our economy will get worse, because there is no plan for post-Brexit recovery and there never was one.

And every now and then he'll pop out and talk shit about things he knows won't be policy by the time the Conservative Party finally die.
