Thread 3 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

Kucingsparkles · 21/12/2022 06:14

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Yes, I love Happy Valley, although came to it very late, so don’t think it’s actually been 6 or 7 years for me, and of course I rewatched series 1 and 2 a week or two ago, so didn’t need the long recap at the start. I just hope Catherine survives to retire!

Britinme · 02/01/2023 14:15

I looked to see if I could get this on streaming, but sadly it's not on any of my streaming services and I don't feel like paying $1.99 an episode to see it.

SinnerBoy · 02/01/2023 14:15

No, I forgot it was on, will watch it on Player.

Meanwhile, in car whinge territory... I've been trying to tax the car online, since Friday. I've lost count of the number of attempts. It's been slow and crashing, but at the final, payment stage, it tells me my card information is wrong, or that it's not a type accepted in the UK.

I even had a page load in what seemed to be Korean. Of course, the Post Office is shut today, we're supposed to be travelling tomorrow, so that means getting up a bit earlier.

Gaahh!

Tricyrtis2022 · 02/01/2023 14:20

A pox on trying to tax the car online! Hope you get it sorted, Sinner.

Our car whinge is that the lower two settings on the fan have stopped working yesterday, so it only works on high, which is very loud and blowy.

IReallyLikeCrows · 02/01/2023 14:23

Yep, watched Happy Valley last night and it was glorious. Without a doubt one of the best dramas to come from this benighted island.

A pox on trying to tax the car online! Hope you get it sorted, Sinner.

Thanks, I've also got a suspicion that I'll have to go to Newcastle, as not all POs do tax, now. I bought a bike 2 years ago and the one right next to the shop directed me to one about 2 miles away.

MavisMcMinty · 02/01/2023 14:57

Have you tried the automated telephone car taxing service, Sinner? I always use it, takes barely any time at all (although admittedly mine is free so there’s no payment to get through). It checks your MOT and insurance are valid which takes just seconds.

SinnerBoy · 02/01/2023 16:51

No, I've not heard of that...

MavisMcMinty · 02/01/2023 16:52

I’ve made Rice Krispies cakes, but didn’t read the comments under the recipe until after I made them, where everyone says “OMG USE HALF (OR QUARTER) THE BUTTER LOL!”. Even as I made them I was thinking “I’m sure I never used butter when I’ve made these before”.

MavisMcMinty · 02/01/2023 16:53

The phone number is on my tax reminder, Sinner. So easy, try it, you just need to enter the code at the top of the letter.

Kucingsparkles · 03/01/2023 07:27

We de-Christmassed the house yesterday, in preparation for the return to normal life. (Ugh, JanuarySad) Although we did leave all the fairy lights up and will be putting up Chinese New Year decorations soon.

Our next-door neighbours were also de-Christmassing at the same time. We astonished them, as they were wrestling their tree out of the front door and getting stuck: because our method is to remove all the branches while it's still indoors and upright in its tree-stand, open the window and throw everything outside into the garden, then collect it all up from there straight into the brown bin. Neighbours said they'd be doing our method in future!

The trunk is more carefully manoeuvred out (two person job) and is kept behind the log store with the dismembered remains of its compatriots from Christmasses past, until at some point we saw it into small logs for our outdoor log burner.

We're traditional here so de Christmas on twelfh night.

Kucingsparkles · 03/01/2023 08:10

@Ginmonkeyagain and other Londoners, here's one for you! As an ex-Londoner who still misses it hugely, I've waded in Grin

In an act of shameless self-promotion, I've started a thread begging for opinions on my bathroom:

Obviously will get stuck in to those rather than dealing with the first day back email mountain!

SinnerBoy · 03/01/2023 09:53

Car is now taxed, at the PO. We don't have the reminder, which was stashed carefully on a unit. I'm assuming that DW binned it.

Kucingsparkles · 03/01/2023 10:04

Glad car tax is sorted, @SinnerBoy!

Oh well done Sinner. Use the telephone automated service next time, it’s so quick and easy.

angelico53 · 03/01/2023 10:05

Morning all and also think that Happy V is so incredibly brilliant.

The beginning, with men condescending, patronising and laughing at our hero, only to be utterly pawned, was an uplifting moment and an actual lol.

Many thanks for the comments on the PhD idea - I'm encouraged and grateful. Also apologies for the deleted post. I realised too late that I had rendered myself identifiable, so had to ask the lovely mods.

Oh well done Sinner. Use the telephone automated service next time, it’s so quick and easy.

I'll give it a go, if I remember! I've never had a problem online, before.

MavisMcMinty · 03/01/2023 10:30

Because my tax is free, I always renew it immediately I get the reminder. Organising an MOT, involving actually driving there and spending money, is a completely different matter, and each year it gets later and later. Not helped by the MOT expiring just before Christmas, of course.

SinnerBoy · 03/01/2023 10:41

Oh dear, it was the same for us! I've got a 1955 motorbike, I loved getting the tax disc:

"Would you like 6 months or 12 months free?"

Patrooshka1 · 03/01/2023 11:00

Happy new year all, glad I found this new thread. Am currently on the naughty step at The Twitters, so may be screaming in to the void here instead.

We never managed to get round to putting the Christmas UP so am impressed that you're all taking it down already.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 03/01/2023 11:21

We're 12th night undecoraters, too. And a mince pie every day for the 12 days of Xmas.

IReallyLikeCrows · 03/01/2023 11:31

No undecorating for me this year because moving in the week before Christmas and getting the lurgy decorations didn't go up. It's all good because I don't get those "it all looks a little dull" blues this year! Getting ready to head to the job centre. I'm in big pain which is no bad thing given I'm having to switch from ESA to universal credit.
