Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Happy new year everyone. I had a mare today but it got sorted. @bignosebignose I'm glad all was well.

Fireworks here and watching Roland Gift (sp?) singing Suspicious Minds on the Hootenanny. It's the 80s all over again.

duc748 · 01/01/2023 00:37

Happy New Year all you lovely people! I've just been down my local pub, and it's always a good Saturday night there. I love it here, and am so glad I moved.

SinnerBoy · 01/01/2023 00:40

Happy New Year, fellow internet wrongmos!

weaseleyes · 01/01/2023 01:24

Happy new year all!

Britinme · 01/01/2023 02:29

<raises yet another glass and waits for another two and a half hours to pass...>

mach2 · 01/01/2023 02:53

Well I've woken up and can't sleep again so it's a cuppa for me. In the meantime, I've no cats or dogs but I do have a menagerie. Yes, I am regressing.

Four of those are gifts, in mitigation.

For the first time I can remember, I fell asleep before midnight, although I had done a long day shift and was conscious of having to get up today to do another. Hope you are feeling better @bignosebignose , and a happy and prosperous new year to all you lovely people.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 01/01/2023 06:57

Happy New Year everyone. What a lovely looking Tarte Tatin.

Talking of octopus I saw a group of people near Tate Modern if that's relevant two of whom were wearing hats crocheted to this pattern:

It is finally the new year in mountain standard time and my dog is going nuts from all the fireworks. Happy new year everyone!

MavisMcMinty · 01/01/2023 07:33

Happy new year my darlings! I’d hope it’ll be better than 2022, but let’s face it, life in the UK is getting worse and worse, so I’ll merely say “let’s hope we all survive 2023” instead. xxx

Tricyrtis2022 · 01/01/2023 09:53

Happy New Year all!

Not a good start for us as we both have colds and Mr T's is a stinker. Quietest NYE ever last night. He had a few bites of dinner and a couple of sips of wine and then went to bed not long after 8pm. I followed at about 9pm. We've both been sleeping a lot.

Tricyrtis2022 · 01/01/2023 09:54

But...lovely apple tart, soft toys, cat toy and octopus hat!

CyanCrystalViolet · 01/01/2023 11:02

Happy New Year everyone! Ended up eating the whole tart in the end as obviously it would be no good at all today. Woke up to K curled up next to me being lovely and affectionate, so we gazed at each other and dozed for a while, bliss. Cramping horrible now but back to my assignment for a couple of hours and then I’ll flop for the rest of the day.

angelico53 · 01/01/2023 11:17

Good morning and happy new year, threadsters all!

We went to bed early but it was like a war zone here at 12. Unbelievable fireworks and racket for 45m at least.

Now it's gorgeous and sunny here and I'm starting to get a vision for my next decade. I'll be 70 in a few weeks; the work I've been doing for the past few years is coming to an end; I've no idea if we can survive without my income, probably not but maybe; I'm both tired and bored!

I'm pretty sure that I want to begin work on a PhD, based on my work in social psychology (applied work - patient safety, as some will know). I've probably got enough already to write up, but there are some actual interventions I'd like to test and some against-the-tide views that I'd like to develop. It's something I've been wanting to do for ages and I'm getting more and more excited by the idea. I had a brilliant supervisor lined up at LSE, but that was 10 years ago and I think she's moved on. A pity, because she has prob the best mind I've ever worked with.

I guess my jobs are to set out the research topics etc., find some blasted funding for the fees, find a new supervisor and at least start. I'm getting a little frisson of delight thinking about this seriously now...!

duc748 · 01/01/2023 12:12

I am put to shame by your energy, angelico! I don't want to do anything except potter about and make my beer and bread! I am an idle fucker, though.

weaseleyes · 01/01/2023 12:40

Good luck with that, angelico! I mainly work with doctoral students whilst inwardly giving thanks for not having to go through that again, but I am a very lazy person.

SinnerBoy · 01/01/2023 12:43

Blimey, I applied for a couple of PhDs, but didn't get one. I couldn't do one now and I'm only 52.

I've just been for a walk with the dog. She swallowed an avocado stone on Boxing Day. It's now passed through!

angelico53 · 01/01/2023 13:12

(I already have one in a different field from 85. It's moved on so much now that there's no way to go back.)

What I want to do now is make sure there's a proper record of the stuff I've (not just me, obvs - we had a big national programme) done since about 2006. I realise I have some things to say and be challenged on.

Thing is, I could easily slip back to just vegging out in the worst way with my personality...

Then let me be a warning to you! 😀

MavisMcMinty · 01/01/2023 14:22

Can’t remember if it was this thread I mentioned the way people treat small dogs in a way they wouldn’t treat big dogs, and the photo halfway down this article from www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/jan/01/fine-dining-cafe-dogs-san-francisco-dogue sums up everything I’m talking about. Can you imagine allowing a doberman or springer spaniel to do this?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 01/01/2023 15:01

Ridiculous.

angelico53 · 01/01/2023 15:06

Those poor creatures with the squashed faces. :(

angelico53 · 01/01/2023 15:07

Not you, Mavis.

SqueakyDinosaur · 01/01/2023 15:26

Every programme you see about bad dog behaviour is 90% people who don't understand that a dog is an animal and not a person, and that it needs a hierarchy where it is definitely not at the top.
