"Yes, but time’s running out. How difficult would it be to repeal laws that are a matter of months old? The deadlines for compliance would outlive the government by quite a margin."

It can be done but it will add to the new government's workload and be used to as "undermining Brexit" hogwash.
Absolutely awful for any business.

Geoff Barton sounds ideal!

He's Geoff Barton. Very different from Lynch in style but he is as people would imagine and want a school leader to be.

Big fan of Geoff:)

ASCL ( no ballot yet) have an excellent spokesman. The others not so much.

Worth a follow on vimeo

I'm pleased for the teachers. Dd is year 13, so a pretty important year for her but we are fully behind the teachers.

DuncinToffee · 16/01/2023 21:42

Two more strike dates announced by Royal College of Nursing - Feb 6 and 7 - if no movement by end January.

There will be action at 73 NHS trusts in England compared to 44 in December and 55 in January

Some great suggestions, I quite like 'spare me' Grin

Boris Johnson is publishing his memoirs. what should he call them?

Boris Johnson will call his book
' the man who should have been King '
Harry should have called his one ' going spare '

DuncinToffee · 17/01/2023 09:35

On the news, the headlines seem all about rising wages

ONS

After taking inflation into account, average pay fell by 2.6% in the year to September to November 2022, both including and excluding bonuses.

Add in years of real terms cuts in the public sector and you can see why employees are voting for strikes.

I was just about to post the BBC story!

Headline somewhat misleading when you get to public vs private sector

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-64290162

DuncinToffee · 17/01/2023 10:07

Yes funny how the front page headline is missing the 'but below inflation'

The BBC still hasn't mentioned Zahawi’s taxes either.....

Quelle surprise

Notonthestairs · 17/01/2023 12:37

"Despite multiple requests the Government refused to define what it considered “fundamental rights” or which worker protections it could guarantee would remain in place at the beginning of next year."

Now why do we think they wont commit to providing like for like legislation.
This is the stuff of ERG/Britannia Unchained dreams. Supply side reforms my arse.

It's probably been linked before but here is a good article from the Guardian outlining the sheer cost (money and manpower) that is required to carry out the EU retained laws bill.
Departments have been told not to reveal how much time and money they are spending doing this.
Are we supposed to consider this value for money?

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/jan/14/whitehall-spending-tens-of-millions-rees-mogg-bill-to-scrap-eu-laws

Blossomtoes · 17/01/2023 12:59

That article has made me furious. No money for public sector pay rises but millions for unnecessary, ideological shit. And starting the work before the legislation’s passed. I hope their increasing number of dissatisfied MPs vote against it.

Notonthestairs · 17/01/2023 13:09

It certainly gives lie to the notion that the Government are trying to balance the books.
Money is no object when it comes to ensuring the purity of Brexit (and undercutting employee rights and environmental standards).

Roussette · 17/01/2023 16:44

Why in the name of all that is holy, are the BBC ignoring the Zahawi tax dodging? He has to repay millions, yet it's crickets.

www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/bbc-silence-on-nadhim-zahawi-tax-probe-deafening-342060/

He's been investigated by the Serious Fraud office and the National Crime Agency, yet he is still Chair of the Conservatives.

We all know if this was a previous Labour Chancellor or a current Labour Chair, the noise would be deafening.

Johnson was warned about his tax affairs, a red flag was raised, but of course he still went ahead and appointed him Chancellor. What a surprise.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/jan/15/nadhim-zahawi-to-pay-millions-in-tax-after-dispute-over-family-finances

Notonthestairs · 17/01/2023 17:00

The BBC havent worked out a way to report on the story and to provide balance - maybe they need to include a interviews with similar tax dodgers to even it out?

Absolutely nothing to do with having Robbie Gibb as a Board member (ex director of communications for Theresa May and Brexiteer and brother to Tory MP & Schools Minister Nick Gibb)

If anyone wants to write to their MP regarding the retained EU law Bill and can use a template, Best of Britain have his one

twitter.com/BestForBritain/status/1615394409431842817?t=ib9q4OfKcPbxuUU_fJNlCg&s=19
This bill is purely motivated by hardline Brexiteers wanting to remove any reference to the EU from our statute books.

^Analysis suggests they've already wasted tens of millions on this. The UK's in crisis. Don't let them waste any more. Write to your MP. hey-mp.uk/?c=eulaw^
