Thanks, will download a podcast app. I found on Spotify an interview with her, by some Canadian woman, who was more interested in talking about herself. I may read the book. I prefer reading. Sounded interesting, but the interviewer spoiled it by telling us the the end conclusion.

I was very disappointed by the reaction of a lot of posters who I thought were sound, I've had my account on JTT cancelled but I've been lurking of the JTT Future thread and there's been some good posts especially by Popstar who called out SteveFrench today. It's telling though the moment gets back on subject (after some tedious philological discussion involving Hattie and Cosh) and starts talking about the impact of JtS's outburst and the number of posters lost they close the thread.

VaginaRegina was a fantastically good name, but at least you're here.

Someone on Twitter said the problem with El* usk was that as an engineer, he thought buying the platform, the licenses, the techies, meant it would continue as before, because he didn't understand that what made it a huge and vibrant online place was the hundreds of thousands of people who use it. Pissing them off is dangerous.

I think the same is true of JtT. JtS designed a really brillianrt space - much more user-friendly that here in so many ways. But then did nothing to keep it populated - people drift away, they die, and new blood is essential. MN has a never ending supply of people becoming mums and wanting to touch base, get advice, chat, so new younger people keep joining (I assume - someone will probably come along and tell me I'm wrong).

But JtT doesn't have that, anyone new who does attempt to join is in danger of finding that horrible 'thread to be sarky about new users' thing, and anyone female who wants to express an opinion on anything (not just feminist subjects) is likely to have one of the MEN show up and instruct them to keep in their lane (it's got worse, as there are fewer of us and just as many of them). There are good people there who haven't a clue what's really going on, and I sympathise as I had no idea the last time there was a feminist exodus - I knew the people who left were gooduns. but hadn't seen the bust-up - but if they don't put the middle class techie Englishmen back in their boxes and accept some diverse members it's just going to keep shrinking.

Yeah, I also went over and read the ongoing binfire that is that discussion. I note with wry amusement that the mods were more than happy for the post to remain open while posters were being referred to as a cesspit, bigots, slithering scum etc etc but the moment Popstar or Carlos called some people out, including JtS, laying out an alternative version of events, the admins stepped in and closed the thread.

Going back to the comments about the new owner of Twitter, the difference there is both that engagement has risen since he took over, and he is now laying bare what was going on for the previous incarnation of the site, including things that GC women were called liars and fantasists for claiming was happening, namely the shadowbanning of people with the wrong views and the suppression of hashtags from trending, give all users a false impression of what topics were driving most conversations.

I assumed that thread was closed because of the cess pit and other comments (that I saw before deletion. Anyway, good to see a few defenders there

It was partly a homage to my favourite-ever name on here (UterusUterusGhali), but I have to say that people seem much happier to @SqueakyDinosaur me than to @VaginaRegina me!

pike, I don't have your faith in the bad people being kept off twitter, I fear they'll just get charged more for access. I hope I'm wrong and you're right.

It comes down to who are the bad people, or more precisely, who decides who the bad people are? My own view is all views ought to be permissable, no matter how disagreeable I find them, if they are also legally permissable to say in that person's own country.

I've seen numerous posts claiming a rise in homophobic, transphobic, racist, misogynist coments etc etc but never one with a link to direct stats showing it to be the case. Nor have I seen this rise on my own timeline. In the immediate aftermath of Musk's takeover people were up in arms that a certain racial epithet could now be used but when I did my own search on that word, 99.9% of the posts which contained it were posts complaining it could now be said.

I am not saying it won't all turn in to the epic binfire for the ages but so far it hasn't.

@CyanCyan what a beauty! My girl is now enjoying her heated pad very much. I also bought one of those Groomi brushes as she has a thick coat and it's really effective.

It is very cold. Mr Monkey is out watching the football, I am at home with a homemade spicey sausage and bean casserole and red wine, watching lovely Richard E Grant ponce around the South of France. I win.

As I sit here nice and toasty in my little flat, I am feeling really depressed by the number of threads on here by people in struggling to heat cold, damp homes. It is just awful.

@SqueakyDinosaur , it's so lovely to see you HelenD! I often think about that night you took me for a meal at the restaurant in Seven Dials and I spent loads of time in the toilet trying to dislodge food that had got stuck. It was such lovely food as well! Well over a decade later and about twenty years since the whole thing started the problem remains but is under more control now - apart from two visits to A&E and one stay in hospital after one of those visits because 1. a large pill got stuck and had to be removed by surgery and 2. meat got stuck and after sleeping overnight on a trolley in a corridor it eventually dislodged roughly 40 hours after getting stuck. At the second event, the doctor asked me "Why do you think this keeps happening?" Idiot.

Re The Future thread on jtt. I had a quick look but didn't go too far because it makes me quite angry a decade later and who needs that shit, but. It was interesting to see that some of the very same people who were arseholes a decade ago are still arseholes today. Plus ca change and all that. The bum-licking of Johnny makes me boak.

My cat doesn't need a heated pad, she plonks herself on top of the radiator, or may wait for it to cool a bit. Hungry for heat.

I found the Future thread rather interesting - especially when That Mod from the first split outed himself. But it's definitely confirmed my decision about moving over here.

I'm terrible with new names, though. I should probably have set up a spreadsheet.
