What was your "first dance" song?

Newly engaged so I am over-thinking all these things at the moment...!
Me and my DP are not lovers of attention but do want to do a "first dance" at our wedding. It might sound an odd choice but I think "Fix You" by Coldplay would be great - lyrics aren't the cheeriest but it's so emotional and has the lovely climactic ending.. is this a rubbish choice? What did you have? We don't have any significant suitable songs that lend themself to the task!!

Mine is so cringy. We didn't have a "song" we didn't even want to have a first dance. We picked a song that was popular at the time. All of me loves all of you. 8 years later I still can't listen to it!!

@Tirrrrred I remember that wedding season very well 😂 at the time I was working at a wedding venue alongside uni and would often work two weddings a week. This must have been the first dance for 50% of couples at the time! You aren't alone.

Muse - can't take my eyes off you (fab song covered by a band we both love, minimum center of attention before everyone else joins in)

traintraveller · 24/11/2022 23:26

We had 2, a his and hers choice. True by spandeau ballet and mint car by the cure.

Ours was Ho Hey by The Lumineers

We had this one too(hence my username).

Story behind it is that our DD loves it and we always said we would dance to it with her. So we started the dancing and got her to join in. We had been together 19 years and engaged for 10 by then

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 24/11/2022 23:33

And the lyrics were very fitting.

Workyticket · 24/11/2022 23:34

We had Ho Hey by the Lunineers. Panic choice as we weren't going to have a first dance!

Toomuchtoolong · 24/11/2022 23:36

Ray lamontagne the best thing

Claysta · 24/11/2022 23:43

Slade - Coz I love you

To be loved, Jackie Wilson

EmmaStone · 24/11/2022 23:47

Harry Connock Jr - It Had to Be You (When Harry Met Sally reference)
Followed by: Barry White - My First, My Last, My Everything and Andy Williams - Can't Take My Eyes off of You.

All quite personal to us as a couple (although I think Andy Williams was having an ironic comeback at the time, so that one was more of a 'of its time' thing).

Pulp. Something changed.

TheBirdintheCave · 24/11/2022 23:55

We had the 1930s/40s Kate Smith version of 'Dream a Little Dream of Me' which then cut out after we'd slow danced about a bit and turned into Whitney Houston's 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody' and then we had everyone come onto the dance floor with us and have a good boogie 😬 It was so much fun!

butteredbarmbrack · 25/11/2022 00:01

@Lovingtheglitter snap, we also had Have I Told You Lately by Van the Man as our first dance. Lovely song...

We tossed up between that and Paul Weller - You Do Something to Me. Wedding was in Belfast, which is one reason Van Morrison won out Smile

dutysuite · 25/11/2022 00:06

We didn’t have guest but we did have a dance after our meal, we chose At Last by Etta James.

Sontagsleere · 25/11/2022 00:06

My four year old has me listening to Taylor Swift recently and I think Lover has great lyrics for a first dance! Great tune too actually.

Bensmum20 · 25/11/2022 00:12

We had Aerosmith's Don't Wanna Miss a Thing, but it was sung by my best friend as an accoustic version. Sometimes if it comes ont he radio, DH calls me, says nothing but turns the radio up loud. The ol' sap. 😆

Divorced now, but we had Into My Arms by Nick Cave

@elp30 I just found it on YouTube with the clean edit! Back on the top of the list it goes!

Ps. Can you tell I love The 1975 ^

Very good reason NOT to have the profanity and I'm glad you found a clean version!
