Do you let your dog lick the dishes?

Lunch at a friend's house last week. Chatting happily. Took plate over to the sink, rinsed it, put it in the dishwasher. Turned around to see her standing behind me holding plate out for dog to lick before adding to the dishwasher.

I love dogs but I have to admit my stomach did turn a little on seeing this. Is this standard for dog owners? I grew up with dogs and we never did this, but I'm wondering if we were in the minority?

Big fat nope from me. That’s all levels of unhygienic and I don’t give a flying fart how hot and efficient the dishwasher is. Just nasty.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2022 13:03

I am sure lots of dog owners will be along to say they’ve always done it and nobody died yet. But it would be a huge eww from me.

Ilikewinter · 13/11/2022 13:04

Absolutely not 🤮

Christ that is disgusting. Pet owners have no hygiene standards.

SirenSays · 13/11/2022 13:04

I love my dogs but no way would I let them lick plates 🤢 between this and the posters who put loo brushes and litter tray scoopers in the dishwasher, I'm never gonna eat at anyone's house again.

OllytheCollie · 13/11/2022 13:04

Our dog often has a nosey at the dishwasher but gets told off for it. I know lots of people who do it though. Agree I am not a fan, unless you run your dishwasher at 80degrees you won't kill all the bacteria found in a dog's mouth. But I probably do equally unsanitary things with my dog without thinking. They are filthy beasts.

Oi! I’m a pet owner and have very high standards, not dogs though. 😄

Johnnysgirl · 13/11/2022 13:05

No! Who does that?

XenoBitch · 13/11/2022 13:05

I let my dog do the prewash on my plates. They get cleaned afterwards.

EdgarFrog · 13/11/2022 13:05

Yep my dog does the pre wash before the dishwasher goes on 😳

He also cleans my toddlers high chair (obviously I disinfect it afterwards). I am clearly a heathen.

SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 · 13/11/2022 13:06

No!

BobbyBobbyBobby · 13/11/2022 13:07

I don’t mind as long as they wash up afterwards.

RewildingAmbridge · 13/11/2022 13:07

Disgusting. As bad as people who kiss their dogs on the mouth.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2022 13:08

Yuck at calling it a pre-wash. They’re dirtier than just when they had just had food on. 😬 Pre-dirty more like.

Same here!! They get sharp shrift and the children also get the same if they leave the dishwasher open!!

Cats23 · 13/11/2022 13:08

No ,it's disgusting.
I have a friend who does this.

BlackberrySky · 13/11/2022 13:08

Ewww. I'm sure the "nobody gets ill from it" is the usual justification, but it's still gross, consequences or not.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 13/11/2022 13:08

I let mine. They eat what I've left and lick the plates - then I put them in the dishwasher

PenOrPencil · 13/11/2022 13:08

Don’t come around here for dinner. The dog is in charge of the pre wash and does a bloody good job.

Georgeskitchen · 13/11/2022 13:08

Of course!! Saves gravy and grease going down the pipes. I call it a public service 🤣🤣

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2022 13:09

Every unhygienic practice on MN is ok because nobody died or got ill. Yet.

PortiasBiscuit · 13/11/2022 13:11

No but the cat has the cereal bowl before it goes in the dishwasher. Which washes at 60c. Germs don’t survive that temperature!

ObjectionSustained · 13/11/2022 13:13

And this is why I don't like eating at others houses; unless they're really close friends.

I like dogs, but that is utterly vile.

dontgobaconmyheart · 13/11/2022 13:15

No, I haven't and wouldn't - bit grim isn't it, and I wouldn't allow my dog to have 'human' food that wasn't suitable for him either. I'm not saying I've never saved him a little bit of something dog suitable from my plate or slipped him the odd bit of carrot or chicken when I'm prepping food whilst cooking but I can't see why there would ever be a need to let him lick my plate. If I did I'm not sure I'd do it in front of company certainly, seems a bold choice.

From a 'hygiene' perspective, if she's dishwashing the plates on a high temp I can't see that that overly matters as it will be clean afterwards but in general no. Pets in general aren't that hygienic and neither are people so I'm not overly precious at home, I like to cuddle ours and he likes to rub himself on everything in sight so I'm under no illusion that our house is actually clean even if it looks it.

Ok that's quite cute, I have to admit.
