Do you let your dog lick the dishes?

Lunch at a friend's house last week. Chatting happily. Took plate over to the sink, rinsed it, put it in the dishwasher. Turned around to see her standing behind me holding plate out for dog to lick before adding to the dishwasher.

I love dogs but I have to admit my stomach did turn a little on seeing this. Is this standard for dog owners? I grew up with dogs and we never did this, but I'm wondering if we were in the minority?

No that's gross (I have 3 dogs)

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/11/2022 15:10

Our dog always did. She was better than a Brillo Pad with a roasting tin, too - would keep at it until barely a molecule remained. Ditto the dish that had held a fish pie - possibly her favourite.
Everything went in the dishwasher afterwards and we’re all still alive and pretty disgustingly healthy.

I absolutely do not do this!

When the cat bowl is in the dishwasher I do use a side plate for my cat to have dinner on lol It’s only occasionally and I guess I need a 2nd bowl
I clean it Well after you’ll be surprised some of the shit humans put in their mouths lol

Absolutely let my dog lick the plates before dishwasher, no problem.

If you are concerned about this, you do not realise how strong (and potentially dangerous) the cleaning chemicals in dishwasher tablets are.

It is science. I really dislike shrill ‘eurgh’ on MN.

sorcerersapprentice · 13/11/2022 15:24

I find it gross.
And even worse when they lick your face 🤮

HeatwaveToNightshade · 13/11/2022 15:25

My MIL lets her dogs do this, with the result that DS2 refuses to eat anything off a plate in her house. I don't blame him to be fair.

AriettyHomily · 13/11/2022 15:28

My last dog used to love climbing in the dishwasher for a pre-wash.

N0RKS · 13/11/2022 15:29

“The dishwasher is NOT a snack tray!”
I swear, if I put any medicine they didn’t like onto a human plate with some cheese and put it in the dishwasher, they would eat it.

I might try that

Lorrymum · 13/11/2022 15:32

When I was little girl in the 60s my gran always let her dogs lick the plates clean.I think most people fed dogs on scraps and leftovers back then.
She also encouraged us to let the dogs lick any cuts we had as "that helped the healing'

hiredandsqueak · 13/11/2022 15:32

No dog has a sensitive stomach so have to be careful what she gets to eat. If there is leftover meat and veg it gets put into her bowl and given to her at her next meal.

AlwaysLatte · 13/11/2022 15:34

He's not allowed but he's crafty and knows how to open it. On the rare occasion he's got away with it no one has been Ill, but we still discourage it.

Giggorata · 13/11/2022 15:36

Good grief, no. And I have three dogs.

I don’t mind as long as they wash up afterwards.

Is that a Podenco Bobby?

20viona · 13/11/2022 15:37

That is fucking foul

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/11/2022 15:39

According to Team Dogs, plates licked by dogs can harbour hidden bacteria such as salmonella which cannot be destroyed by dishwashing. As well as this, many foods still lingering on human plates can be poisonous to dogs, resulting in your pup becoming poorly.

🤮

That’s exactly what our dog does, @AriettyHomily .🤣 We try to stop him, but he’s small and cunning-I turn my back to get some more plates to load and he’s right in there. We use a hot wash, of course. No ill effects so far after 8 years.

KindergartenKop · 13/11/2022 15:42

Someone in my family does this. They try to make me put my dishes down for the dogs too. It's gross.

DarlingDog · 13/11/2022 15:42

Mine eats at the table.

No beer though, unless he cleans his plate.

vdbfamily · 13/11/2022 15:43

Our dog will lick if allowed of if dishwasher left open with dirty plates. We wash his bowls in there too so don't see much difference really. He was a Spanish rescue and has always been a scavenger. We have to keep bins out of his reach or he empties then looking for food.

User2145738790 · 13/11/2022 15:44

Just when you thought dirty fuckers couldn't get any more dirty fucker-y. Envy

Recycledblonde · 13/11/2022 15:44

I do but not in front of guests.

Our dog is also a rescue @vdbfamily and I definitely think this influences his behavior. He was very skinny and eating out of park bins when he was found. ☹️ He’s on the rotund side of healthy now.😂

Spacebears · 13/11/2022 15:49

Absolutely not, yuck
