Do you let your dog lick the dishes?

Lunch at a friend's house last week. Chatting happily. Took plate over to the sink, rinsed it, put it in the dishwasher. Turned around to see her standing behind me holding plate out for dog to lick before adding to the dishwasher.

I love dogs but I have to admit my stomach did turn a little on seeing this. Is this standard for dog owners? I grew up with dogs and we never did this, but I'm wondering if we were in the minority?

Our old family dog used to lick the dishes as they went in the dishwasher - so I feel kind of nostalgic about that 😂 but I wouldn’t let my dog do that now.
Can’t say I think it’s gross as long as the dishwashers going on a hot wash.

No but the cat has the cereal bowl before it goes in the dishwasher. Which washes at 60c. Germs don’t survive that temperature!

That why you cook chicken to 75C... of course some germs do.

Brigante9 · 13/11/2022 16:00

God, no, that’s disgusting and I love my dogs to bits.

OP, wait until you see them put the dog bowls in with the human plates into the same dishwasher....
I was my cat dishes in the downstairs loo sink with their own sponge, no way they'd go near the kitchen sink.

CadburyCrunchy · 13/11/2022 16:08

@NinjaSnail I agree with you, it would be a firm no from me... I've previously read on MN where some people even put toilet brushes, dirty cloths and dog and cat bowls in the dish washer along with the family dishes as 'they're all being washed together at 60' as if that makes it ok then... that was a whole new level of gross that I didn't know existed out there!

Christ that is disgusting. Pet owners have no hygiene standards.

Erm, PET OWNERS are not ALL the same!

Clawdy · 13/11/2022 16:15

My mum always let our dog lick out remaining dregs in cups of tea. No dishwasher in those days! Have to say, my sister and I had quite a few stomach upsets.......

woohoowoohoo · 13/11/2022 16:15

Wouldn't even occur to me not to put the dog bowls in the dishwasher ! I'll have to make sure I'm not doing it when people around then !

Wailywailywaily · 13/11/2022 16:20

If you have pets you most likely share the same gut bacteria as them anyway. Letting your dog clean the plates is really not going to make any difference.

Urgh no not a chance. Dog food and bowls and the cleaning of them are kept well separate to the human stuff. Proper grim.

woohoowoohoo · 13/11/2022 16:27

It's no worse than putting a chopping board in that you've cut raw meat on. That could have salmonella too. The whole point is the dishwasher blasts things, you can even sterilise jam jars in one!

anonymous123a · 13/11/2022 16:27

My dog gets the option of anything that won't be a risk to her health whether plates, bowls, cups etc... Her food bowls also go in the dishwasher with our items, as do the horses bits. Horse brushes, stirrup irons etc... go through the dishwasher but not with our cutlery and crockery etc... People who visit know me and my standards and are very welcome to decline to eat/drink or bring their own cutlery and crockery. This is my dogs and horses home as much as it is mine and anyone who attends is merely a guest.

Thegannethasfled · 13/11/2022 16:28

Yeah it is disgusting but I let my dog clean up the crumbs off my toast plate before it goes in the dishwasher on hot wash gross innit oh well he is probably cleaner than some people's husbands by what I read on here.

Autumn101 · 13/11/2022 16:29

He’s not meant to lick plates but will try and sneak a go if the dishwasher is left open! I’m surprised how many people let them, I’m fairly slack on housekeeping in general but pet dishes are washed up separately with their own brush and we have pet forks etc for doing their food.

BMW6 · 13/11/2022 16:29

We let ours lick plates and he's very good at pre washing pans.

I won't be inviting any of the Pearl clutchers to dinner so couldn't care less what anyone thinks 😆

OhmygodDont · 13/11/2022 16:30

This is why I don’t eat or drink at other peoples houses. Unless its a bottle
or water I’ll wait till I get home no thank you, thank you.

Yes my lovely dog licks the plates. He thinks he's being helpful.
I also feed him my dinner and we share the same fork. He's not caught any germs off me yet.

No, he doesn’t think he’s being helpful 🙄 He’s an animal. He’s just greedy.

Floralnomad · 13/11/2022 16:32

Our dog eats off plates and then they go in the dishwasher , he also sleeps on the beds and sofas and nobody has died of anything yet . This is the same ridiculousness as you can’t use a bath towel that your husband has used but you are quite happy to have sex with him .

LadyKenya · 13/11/2022 16:36

Yuk, I would never eat at a friends house again if I saw them do that.

nomoreflyingducks · 13/11/2022 16:38

Given my dogs penchant for fox and badger poo, oh and once a deliquescing rabbit Envy, she ain't licking no human plates!

No it’s not…

I’ll use his towel, but I am not sharing a plate or cup with an animal. Also not sharing a sofa or bed with one and I have cats, used to have dogs and I even raw prey diet fed them.

nomoreflyingducks · 13/11/2022 16:40

Oops just to be clear Envy= vom not envy!

MsPrism · 13/11/2022 16:40

My Ddog does not lick plates, because I don't want her to gain weight or eat too much salt/fat. If a friend of mine did this, I would think that the dishwasher would kill any germs.

Floralnomad · 13/11/2022 16:42

@OhmygodDont you do realise that when people let dogs eat off the plates it’s when the meal has finished - I’m not going to still eat off the plate myself . Do your cats not sit on the beds or sofas , you do realise they are no different to dogs in their habits .

CharlotteFlax · 13/11/2022 16:43

When we had a dog we might have put leftovers in his bowl but never licking our plates.

His spit was so slobbery and sticky i would've had to boil wash any plates before putting them in the dishwasher!
