Do you let your dog lick the dishes?

Lunch at a friend's house last week. Chatting happily. Took plate over to the sink, rinsed it, put it in the dishwasher. Turned around to see her standing behind me holding plate out for dog to lick before adding to the dishwasher.

I love dogs but I have to admit my stomach did turn a little on seeing this. Is this standard for dog owners? I grew up with dogs and we never did this, but I'm wondering if we were in the minority?

Very rarely do we allow our dog to lick a plate because we are careful with what we give her to eat. And if we do, the dishwasher will be put on violence mode. But to be fair our dog and our cat have never brought parasites or germs into the house. The DCs on the other hand......

SimonandGarfunkel · 15/11/2022 12:34

Yes always employ the canine prewash and have done for 25 years!!!

Isn't there research that suggests that kids growing up with pets have better immune systems?

When my DC were crawling around on the floor with 3 dogs following them I expect they consumed all sorts. Very robust healthy teenagers now 😂!!

All I'm taking from this thread is there are people who couldn't give a toss what they feed their dogs or that their dogs have got into the habit of taking from plates. The people I know who take dog ownership seriously are careful about diet and bad habits. I shouldn't be surprised by this thread really.

My dog doesn't take from plates. He sits. I might put a plate on the floor. He waits. When I say 'take' he licks it. Demonstrating superb control training in fact.

SimonandGarfunkel · 15/11/2022 16:41

Same @faffadoodledo - not sure why it is viewed as not giving a toss @gamerchick - quite the contrary. I am well aware of what dogs are not allowed to eat and feed them accordingly. Never had an overweight dog or one that has been made ill by licking the plate. More MN hyperbole.

My dog doesn’t take from plates and is only allowed things that he can eat , he waits until the plates reach the kitchen and is then allowed suitable leftovers - egg , meat etc .

Guilty

Clawdy · 12/03/2023 19:29

When I was little my mum always let our dog lick plates and the inside of cups. Looking back, interesting how many times my sister and I had upset stomachs!

Tink1990 · 12/03/2023 19:39

Yuk 🤢 nope, we never allowed this! This is why I always look rude when I always say 'no thank you' to any food or drink at people's home. I just can't!

The dishwasher will sanitize the plate . Calm the fuck down !

I let my dogs lick my face . I'm not dead yet .

Why do you let your dog lick your face? You know where it's likely been a few minutes before 🤮
Not being dead yet is a pretty low bar for hygiene standards.

lots of dog haters on mn, read this sentence before more than once too! Am so happy that there are so many dog lovers out there.......to me it seems that it's a much newer trend to be not in favour of so many things these days.......Overreactions galore on this thread alone with stupid comments suggesting dogs are almost our enemies.......I really enjoy mn but sometimes it can leave one a little dismayed....

Dog haters? Why? I have two, I wouldn't let them lick my dishes or my face.
It's really not because I hate them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Friarclose · 12/03/2023 20:05

I let my dog lick plates and I don't have a dishwasher. I hand wash it. I guess I'm truly disgusting! 😆

userxx · 12/03/2023 20:36

@Johnnysgirl Hygiene standards 🤣. Do you actually have a dog ?

I've already said I have two. Saying it twice seems unnecessary 😂

userxx · 12/03/2023 21:03

@Johnnysgirl 🤣 couldn't be bothered to read previous replies. How the hell do you manage with two dogs, surely one must have tried to lick your face at some point. I'm assuming your face is still intact and hasn't dropped off.

KillingLoneliness · 15/03/2023 10:49

No! That’s disgusting 🤢 We also don’t give our dog food off our plates and it infuriates me when family members are eating and go to give our dog some of their food, any left overs get mixed directly into his food.

Another huge dog lover here who refuses to let my dog or anyone else’s dog lick my face! 🤢

Giggorata · 15/03/2023 10:54

I am a dog lover, with three dogs.
They are NOT allowed to lick plates, or anything else to do with human food.
Yuck.

Paperexcelandpens · 15/03/2023 17:44

I have 2 dogs. Neither are allowed to lick plates or faces etc in this house.

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 15/03/2023 18:13

Absolutely not, I don’t let them lick me either 🤢
