Do you let your dog lick the dishes?

Lunch at a friend's house last week. Chatting happily. Took plate over to the sink, rinsed it, put it in the dishwasher. Turned around to see her standing behind me holding plate out for dog to lick before adding to the dishwasher.

I love dogs but I have to admit my stomach did turn a little on seeing this. Is this standard for dog owners? I grew up with dogs and we never did this, but I'm wondering if we were in the minority?

@OhmygodDont you do realise that when people let dogs eat off the plates it’s when the meal has finished - I’m not going to still eat off the plate myself . Do your cats not sit on the beds or sofas , you do realise they are no different to dogs in their habits .

By that logic you''d be happy to eat out of the dog's bowl, once it's been washed between meals.
Surely not?

Cynderella · 13/11/2022 16:45

I don't, but I know others in the family do.

Really can't care - I do care about covering food, not leaving it out of the fridge too long, using clean equipment and wiping everything down afterwards, but I trust washing up in hot water, or using the dishwasher to do their job. And I've worked in hotel kitchens, so I know how dodgy they can be. I would take the risk with family pets.

Our dog eats off plates and then they go in the dishwasher , he also sleeps on the beds and sofas and nobody has died of anything yet . This is the same ridiculousness as you can’t use a bath towel that your husband has used but you are quite happy to have sex with him .

It is nothing remotely like sharing a towel with your husband 😂😂😂

Yuk. I’m a dog owner and would never dream of letting him lick something we eat from, that’s disgusting and makes dog owners look like we are an unhygienic bunch. I’m quite a clean person, my dogs bum gets wiped every time he pops and he’s bathed often. Your friend is rank I’m afraid.

whatwasthiscritter · 13/11/2022 16:47

I would never let my dog do that but then I am quite strict and don't let her lick peoples faces or sit on the furniture or beds. She is a very happy spoilt girl but there are limits

newbookonshelf · 13/11/2022 16:48

It's an ew from me and that's saying something because I'm very lax on hygiene and of the eat mud generation.

I will let my cats eat off our crockery but maybe it's that I don't like dogs and that I hand wash dishes, and the dish the cat had touched would be scrubbed with the cloth I use for the bowls. Swirling around the dishwasher? I find that gross.

But people with dogs let them lick their face don't they, they just don't find dogs' saliva disgusting so I suppose I get it because I feel that way about cats.

My are are not allowed upstairs and no they do not go onto the sofa or work tops. Just as my dogs where not allowed upstairs or onto sofas etc.

You wipe your dog's bum??

OhmygodDont · 13/11/2022 16:51

Johnnysgirl · 13/11/2022 16:50

You wipe your dog's bum??

I’m guessing she has a long haired poo nugget type of dog.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 13/11/2022 16:52

@Johnnysgirl yes I do. He has his bum wiped and then he can climb all over the furniture and me. He’s also sleeps on my bed which I’d never allow with a shitty bum.

shimmeringspice · 13/11/2022 16:59

So disgusting.

autienotnaughty · 13/11/2022 17:01

I tell him no but he will if he can get away with it!

DarlingDog · 13/11/2022 17:04

Calm down dears - dishwasher sorts it all out.

Calm down dears - dishwasher sorts it all out.

But not as effectively if the plates are licked clean.

Eat out the dog bowls for dinner then since it’s so perfectly fine 🤷🏻‍♀️

I find the fact that you hand wash dishes that your cat's been eating off using the same cloth gross.

I have a cat and a dog. The cat is really not more disgusting than the dog. The cat has a lot more enthusiasm for dead things than the dog

If you've ever stuck your face in a bag of dishwasher detergent, there is no way anything survives being doused in that

LimeCheesecake · 13/11/2022 17:14

Oh god you’d hate me - before now when we’d forgotten to put the dishwasher on so all the dogs bowls were dirty, ice served her food to her in a normal side plate. Then it went in the dishwasher and from there back to the cupboard, I didn’t instantly smash it outdoors, then pour bleach over each bit before binning.

yes, she can do a puppy pre wash. Get a new dishwasher if yours doesn’t actually clean things.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2022 17:14

All cat’s dishes washed separately here, they don’t go in the dishwasher and I have a washing up brush just for the cat’s stuff.

Well I would if they were big enough - but everything goes in dishwasher anyway.

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2022 17:16

I’d not put pets bowls in the dishwasher. They don’t need to be that squeaky clean.

lljkk · 13/11/2022 17:18

Only cats here, yes allowed to lick our bowls clean (do an amazing job) & I'd let a dog lick clean too if something safe for them.

omg, this is a way to keep people from visiting? () Why did no one tell me before. Can I put a sign up outside & keep them all away? Marvelous !

() except I dont' mind people dropping by or visiting unannounced, but you know, if they are the sort who object to the dog licks, they probably aren't my sort of people anyway, so what a great filter to keep those sort away. Love it. Cheers for the tip.

I don’t mind as long as they wash up afterwards.

Adorable photo! Grin

Christ that is disgusting. Pet owners have no hygiene standards.

Not all pet owners 🙄

Travis1 · 13/11/2022 17:27

Clymene · 13/11/2022 13:24

Yes I do but I have a dishwasher. I typically find hand washed crockery much more revolting as most people aren't very good at it and wash things in lukewarm water. A spoon which has been licked by a human and has been handwashed is much grimmer.

And I would be very happy to never entertain you again Smile

Yup! When I hand wash glasses I have the water scalding. I don’t let husband hand wash anything because he’s a tepid water wimp

MOTU · 13/11/2022 17:32

so I'll go against the grain in saying I really don't think this puts anyones health at risk - if the dishwasher can't deal with dog lick then why would you trust it to clean raw chicken juice off chopping boards?? but I don't let me dog do this and I'm constantly amazed how many of my friends let their dogs do it and then are mystified why their dogs always have the runs....! human food isn't dog food!
