Do you let your dog lick the dishes?

Lunch at a friend's house last week. Chatting happily. Took plate over to the sink, rinsed it, put it in the dishwasher. Turned around to see her standing behind me holding plate out for dog to lick before adding to the dishwasher.

I love dogs but I have to admit my stomach did turn a little on seeing this. Is this standard for dog owners? I grew up with dogs and we never did this, but I'm wondering if we were in the minority?

God no, disgusting behaviour.

DillDanding · 13/11/2022 17:39

Ew no.

My ILs do though. And they did it in the days before they had a dishwasher which is even more revolting.

Of course!! Saves gravy and grease going down the pipes. I call it a public service 🤣🤣

🤣🤣🤣

No, I wouldn’t do that, but tbh not for hygiene reasons... I already live with the dog, I wash my hands when I’ve done something dirty, but not every time I throw his balk or touch him, so I’m pretty sure we’re sharing germs and stuff anyway, plus, I put his bowls in the dishwasher with our stuff.

So, if I’m going to get ill from the dog, I doubt him licking plates would make much difference.

But most of our food isn’t suitable for dogs, so he doesn’t get to eat it.

Yes I do but I have a dishwasher. I typically find hand washed crockery much more revolting as most people aren't very good at it and wash things in lukewarm water. A spoon which has been licked by a human and has been handwashed is much grimmer.

And I would be very happy to never entertain you again Smile

Halloween Smileok. I think I'd cope with never being invited by you again...

Well I never let him do it but one night I inadvertently left the dishwasher open and he had a high old time with his head stuffed in there. So obviously I re-homed the dog, threw out the dishes and set fire to the house before checking us all into a retreat. Seemed the only sensible course of action.

We give our dogs the dregs of our cups of teas 😂

Than a plate or bowl shared with the dog? Haha 😂 😂😂

I hope you tip them in it’s bowl.

XenoBitch · 13/11/2022 17:48

If you stay in hospital, the food you are served will have also previously been on the same plates/cutlery (have a think about that when you put a spoon in your mouth) as patients with awful infections.

If you eat in a cafe/restaurant, that spoon you are putting in your mouth will have been in hundreds of other mouths before you. The pint glass with your beer in will have touched the lips of countless others too.

Human mouths are pretty disgusting. You need antibiotics if someone bites you and pierces the skin.

OhmygodDont · 13/11/2022 17:48

hand washing is only grim if your actually using a washing up bowl. Same as bathing just sitting in filth. Which is also have a dishwasher works a lot of the time by the way. Recycling it’s own water during certain stages of the “clean”.

my washing up is done of scolding water, no bowl and a new sponge.

I didn't know my dog liked tea until I caught her with her snout in my mug, licking up the dregs.
I now sometimes do her a cup of decaff as a treat.

Scolding water? Jeez, what did you do?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/11/2022 17:54

My ex used to do this. Gross

I don’t have much feeling temperature wise so tend to just turn things upto max.

You use a new sponge every time? Where is this 'scolding' water coming from?

Yes, because I don’t want claggy bits of food from the day before washing up on my plates or grease or anything? From my hot tap only being on full.

I do but not in front of guests.

Presumably because you know they’d not want to accept anything to eat/drink if they saw it so on some level you are aware how disgusting it is.

Siezethefish · 13/11/2022 17:58

My dog does the pre wash. He isn’t a fan of mustard or rocket though so he licks round the bits he doesn’t like

Nothing wrong with hand washing 🙄

If the water is genuinely scalding, there won't be any parts of yesterday's dinner left on the sponge Confused

Fussy little bugger.

dottydoglover · 13/11/2022 18:02

Yes I let this happen and my house is clean and tidy ... I can imagine that some people would find this unheigenic etc but my dogs are my family and I don't worry about such things ! Plenty of other things to worry about ! Blush

I am sure lots of dog owners will be along to say they’ve always done it and nobody died yet. But it would be a huge eww from me.

Not if they value their pets health. Human food is very bad for dogs.

I have a dog but no I wouldn’t let him lick plates.

Sorry, I thought 'scolding' was a typo, I wasn't trying to be an arse.
