Hello from Surrey πŸ™‚ and straight off the bat I will say in respect to a recent post, that I would prefer a weakened Putin than a Kadyrov/ Prigozhin combo.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 12/11/2022 17:04

Thank you MagicFox

<Tips hat> Have been lurking and very rarely posting (under previous username) on all these threads. They are absolutely marvellous - thank you to all who contribute.

Thanks for the new thread.

Not been contributing much recently (basically because I've little to add the more knowledgeable posters have already covered) but reading avidly.

So an opportunity to thank all the regular contributors for their insights and links.

I'm sure there are many lurkers on this thread such as myself.

Slava Ukraine!

L1ttledrummergirl · 12/11/2022 17:28

Thank you for the thread.
As a British army brat, I know the wars my dad fought in (and from others some of what he accomplished) and I know that those men achieve more than we think possible.

Look at the falklands to see how they went about their business. They tend to look at what needs doing and find a way to do it, not possible is not an option. They have been involved in training Ukrainian soldiers and a big part of that is mindset.

I think that I'm trying to say, don't pooh pooh the war stories, the thread leads into what's happening now.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/11/2022 17:29

Thank you for the new thread!

Patrushev is also another contender for the post-Putin Russia, perhaps. Also a hawk.

People keep saying Putin -is- sane but I don't think he is, myself. He's still got the ability to actually think, but his inverted world view that everyone's out to get Russia, world view and his inability to adjust to events as they are rather than as he wants them to be shows a fundamental mental ill-adjustment to my mind.

Hancox432 · 12/11/2022 19:28

.

Hancox432 · 12/11/2022 19:37

So the issue we face is if the world is safer with a weakened Putin rather than someone else. Then this is as frustrating as it would be, the need to negotiate so that Putin can spin a win back home to remain in power just with a severely depleted military. Cast iron garuntees would need to be given to Ukraine in the case of any further aggression.

While it's not ideal from a Ukrainian morale point of view and I'm sure the Ukrainian population would have something to say about it. From a more broad European and world security point of view, the world may be safer with a depleted Putin in charge as opposed to someone else. Defeating Putin outright may mean he loses power however that does not mean in any way shape or form that Russia is any less dangerous as the issues are deep within the Kremlin and not just with Putin himself.

Greenshake · 12/11/2022 19:43

Very interesting article by Galeotti in The Times highlighting the exact Crimea issue I was talking about earlier. I will try to share it.
