I would ask wtf they're thinking, but I believe they stopped doing that a long time ago. This isn't a government, its a group of people constantly reacting to events without planning or thinking anything through. Something needs to be done in the future so dead duck governments can be got rid much quicker. The full damage they are doing is yet to be seen.

I think this is really insightful and exactly right. They’re just total chancers, in power for its own sake or personal gain, swayed by whoever is moaning loudest or donating highest inside and outside their party.

I watched a BBC documentary on Blair and Brown in which Blair was talking about taking office with his ten year plan to end economic boom and bust and improve the lives of the people. A lot of which he did actually put in place.

I really wanted to cry hearing that level of moral responsibility and good intention towards ordinary people in a PM. Obviously Blair did a lot of missteps as well and wasn’t perfect, but the way it was considered and well intended towards people instead of random and cynical and corruptly motivated by the needs of the Tory party and of a tiny wealthy section of beneficiaries… was worlds apart to Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss and Sunak.

Behind a paywall but Sunday times have a PPE rich list.

The horse owning couple mentioned above are top of it and apparently now offshore based!

itsgettingweird · 11/12/2022 15:44

Just been to watch panto as my nephew is in it.

They did a few brilliant gags about the current government and one of the main characters did a speech

"You have to stay home - unless you reasonably must go out"
"All shops must shut - except those that can stay open"
"All Christmas parties are cancelled - unless they are happening at Downing Street"

And the room of Johnson brilliantly 🤣🤣

If it wasn't so funny you could have cried at the reality.

itsgettingweird · 11/12/2022 15:46

Took off Johnson brilliantly that should have said.

The ever so serious Royal Shakespeare Company production of A Christmas Carol, manages to include a dig at Johnson, and it was clear from the audience reaction the night I went there weren't many fans in the house.

Notonthestairs · 11/12/2022 17:11

I love panto. Johnson and friends must have provided a decent amount of material.

In a sign that the Conservatives are a happy & contented family they've got a new action group and relaunched another -

Conservative Democratic Organisation - headed by Patel and Lord Cruddas (both Johnson backers). Apparently one of their aims are restore democracy within the Conservative Party. Truss was brought down by a conspiracy apparently and Sunak is a lefty. It is time for members to take back control - I think we can imagine where this is leading...

Oh and the group is chaired by David Campbell Bannerman, a former Ukip deputy leader who was a Conservative member of the European Parliament.

https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1707915/lord-cruddas-new-tory-movement-boris-johnson-liz-truss-rishi-sunak?intsource=amppcontinuereading&inttmedium=amp&intcampaign=continueereadingbutton#amp-readmore-target

The the relaunched group is Conservative Way Forward. A group set uo to defend Thatcherism. Now made up of Steve Baker, Ian Duncan Smith, 30P Lee etc. They are publishing a report tomorrow which suggests ways to achieve want £7bn of tax cuts (particularly from anything that might require equality, diversity and inclusion as that has a political agenda).

One big happy family.

Commons now voting on regulations related to the requirement for voters to present photographic identification when voting at polling stations at UK Parliamentary elections in Great Britain.

Approved ayes 298 noes 199

twitter.com/parlyapp/status/1602400908398235665?s=46&t=FcpvfwSrVqJo_xXbsMIEZA

That's a relief. Our elections will no longer be at risk from those 6 individuals convicted for election fraud.

L1ttledrummergirl · 12/12/2022 21:11

My MP never did bother to reply to me. I'll try to see how she voted.

pointythings · 12/12/2022 21:14

It's a hideous piece of legislation. If you look at the permitted forms of ID, they heavily favour the Tory voting demographic. And councils have already asked for it to be delayed, because they will be unable to put in place the infrastructure to provide voter ID to people who don't have an acceptable form of ID, nor will they be able to implement the training and systems needed for May's elections. They're stealing democracy now, as expected.

DowningStreetParty · 12/12/2022 21:15

Oh Jesus that’s awful.

Is that correct? Because I wrote to my MP twice about this. He didn't reply. So I complained to CCHQ and the Local Conservative Party office that I'd had no response. That made him reply to me.

And he said this on IDs...

"Anyone without a form of identification will be able to apply for a new free Voter Card, meaning that no voter will be disenfranchised. Ministers assure me that this system will be in operation in good time ahead of the implementation of voter identification. The Electoral Commission will also be delivering a national communications campaign for voter identification"

If this doesn't come about, I am writing again.

jgw1 · 12/12/2022 21:26

I am sure I remember about this time last year a minister or two assuring us their hadn't been any illegal parties in Downing Street, and in fact everyone had just got together for the perfeclty legal activty of watching Boris water the pot plants.

DowningStreetParty · 12/12/2022 21:28

This parliamentary briefing talks about the issues and it also links to the letter below: which talks about the government’s assurances that its ‘plan’ is to get the free voter ID provision done on time. Not saying then that they ‘will’ or definitely ‘can’ get it done in time.. . Hmm

Notonthestairs · 12/12/2022 21:42

Thanks for those links DowningStreetParty.

Good to see that William Wragg had been pushing them. The letter is dated 30th August - I wonder how much has actually been completed so far, particularly given recent political drama.

I'm very concerned that this hasn't had much (any?) media coverage recently.

We are walking blindly in to very important changes and there has been minimal scrutiny.

BewareTheLibrarians · 12/12/2022 21:43

@Roussette I think you’re going to need to write again :(

Amid concerns about voters being turned away and polling station workers being confronted, the body representing councils told the Observer there was simply not enough time to deal with all the risks that will be created by the new system.

Ministers have said the change to photo ID has been introduced in order to protect the integrity of elections, but the short notice has alarmed the officials tasked with organising them. Jamieson said he had concerns about the time left to review polling stations and prepare the new IT systems required.

There have also been problems in recruiting polling station staff and volunteers, given fears over the potential for conflict that the new photo ID measures could create.

Not to mention the “ID blackspots” (map here)

And this egregious bullshit from the same link (in the image if it works).

@BewareTheLibrarians

I think I am. And I think I will be ignored yet again. And will have to complain yet again.

BewareTheLibrarians · 12/12/2022 21:54

There’s no accountability is there @Roussette and no interest in what their constituents actually care about.

Our local LibDems sent out a leaflet asking for our opinions and what was important to us, while the conservatives sent a leaflet outlining all their “achievements” (including affordable housing that they failed to mention was only 1 bed flats and no family homes.) Sums it up really.

Notonthestairs · 12/12/2022 21:55

So £15 million to combat non existent voter fraud during a cost of living crisis.

pointythings · 12/12/2022 21:57

@Notonthestairs well, if you look at it as 15 million spent to stop a lot of non-Tory votes from happening, it looked like a good investment for the Tories.

BewareTheLibrarians · 12/12/2022 21:59

@pointythings thats so accurate that it hurts 😞

No accountability whatsoever. It's appalling that I had to complain to CCHQ and local Conservative office to get a reply from my MP. He's had the seat for 30 years, has no constituency office, no SM and is complacent.

Yes I was looking at it from the wrong tax payer angle rather than from the position of a Conservative politician.

This is similar to anti protest legislation- people won't notice the impact yet but they will.

Notonthestairs · 12/12/2022 22:51

Jacob Rees-Mogg - We're bringing in photo ID to ensure a problem doesn't arise... "our voters(Tory) won't find it unduly onerous or taxing to turn up with an identity document of some kind"

https://twitter.com/haggisuk/status/1392764728225763329?s=46&t=IYt-VGGdfBK9O7oII_DmIvg

Cabinet Office has found that 42% of people with no photo ID are unlikely to apply for one: “This would suggest that close to half of those without photo ID would not seek to apply for the voter card,” it admitted.
