It’s going to be sickening watching the media suddenly turn the spotlight on how bad things are in the NHS to hunt down striking nurses with when it’s been like this for over a year.

Bet we’ll start having it highlighted non-stop that wait times for ambulances are catastrophic and unfit people are being sent home - whilst glossing over the thousands this has been affecting for months.

NEW: Former Tory MP Owen Paterson has released a statement on why he's taking his case on lobbying to the European Court of Human Rights:

"The irony that Mr Paterson, a vocal opponent of European institutions, should be seeking the help of the ECHR is not lost."

twitter.com/sebastianepayne/status/1597167204004352001?s=46&t=bSLTGBA45zmpGDZasTpv0A

Tweet includes letter from Patersons lawyers who seem to have framed their argument quite similarly to Johnson's supposedly devastating legal opinion (Panick).

Random thought about Patterson claim to Strasbourg. His claim is against Standards Committee.

The Privileges Committee used to be part of the Standards Committee but it was felt that lay members should not get a vote on parliamentary privilege. So the two committees were separated.

However the Committees have the same MPs appointed, same chair and appear to share similar mechanisms. The difference is that Standards have lay members.

Seems to me that a case about the Standards Committee will reflect on Privileges Committee.

Just wondering whether Patterson claim is a bit of a stalking horse or at least useful to Johnson.

Nothing to back that up. Just pondering.

When is the Covid Enquiry?

Terms of Reference were concluded in the summer. I think they are expecting witnesses in next summer. It's going to take years to conclude though.

mibbelucieachwell · 28/11/2022 11:14

It's incredible that trust the con party more than the Labour Party on defence and security. This is the party that had a foreign secretary who was denied security clearance for certain documents by as he was such a liability; a foreign secretary who went on to become PM; a PM who was mates with Russian oligarchs, who ignored security advice and gave his Russian pal a seat in the HofL.

Liz Truss claimed the jury was out on whether Emmanuel Macron was a friend of Britain.
That's a scandalous record.

Fladdermus · 28/11/2022 10:19

WTF, they're planning to have the public get angry and turn on nurses? This is considered good governance? Fucking evil is what it is.

Unlucky. I don’t think it will happen, particularly as they’re refusing to even open negotiations with the RCN.

L1ttledrummergirl · 28/11/2022 12:40

It's interesting that they can't afford to give the nurses a decent, above inflammation (that they caused) payrise or employ more nurses but, they can afford (in my family members hospital and possibly others), a whole new tier of management level, and in most hospitals, the extortionate cost and instability of paying inflated costs to agencies, run by ?, for temporary nurses to fill in the gaps because the same nurses can earn more doing agency work than being paid directly by the NHS. Pay the nurses more and the agencies less.

Piggywaspushed · 28/11/2022 13:14

Sorry , shouldn't laugh but above inflammation payrise did tickle me rather. Apt.

L1ttledrummergirl · 28/11/2022 13:40

Do you know, I read that three times, knew something was wrong but couldn't see it. Thanks for making me giggle, it is a fortunate autocorrect. Grin

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 28/11/2022 14:02

On Newsnight on Friday they mentioned how railworkers are being refused a pay rise in line with inflation however rail bosses got an above inflation pay rise. It's abhorrent.

Ah you see wage/bonus rises for bosses /bankers don't drive inflation or some such...

InMySpareTime · 28/11/2022 14:46

Might be because rich people don't spend their extra money, they send it offshore where it can drive other people's inflation instead.
If only the low-waged would forgo doing inflationary things like eating and keeping warm then they too could have pay rises that don't stoke inflation...

DuncinToffee · 28/11/2022 17:18

Anyone interested in applying?

Candidates snub Sunak’s ethics adviser role left vacant for five months - amid fears from candidates that Sunak will not change the remit of the role to allow advisor to launch their own investigations. No change to the remit from Boris Johnson era.

And yet they spend a smaller proportion of their income on management than other large businesses. Maybe they need more managers?

Using agency staff is counter productive

pointythings · 28/11/2022 20:04

@ancientgran your post really resonates. The whole trope that the NHS is weighed down by too many managers is so much nonsense. So many people who have the word 'manager' in their job title actually also carry a full clinical workload! But people don't want to hear that, do they?

A Tory spokesperson in the House of Lords confirms that Michelle Mone isn't going to have the whip suspended until the outcome of NCA inquiry into PPPMedPro or Lords standards committee probe.
^^
"The decision has been made that she will retain the whip," they say.

OP posts:
L1ttledrummergirl · 29/11/2022 20:09

Why would they suspend her when she doesn't seem to have done anything that they wouldn't have done in the same situation.

It makes you consider how many more have done the same?

Notonthestairs · 29/11/2022 20:12

I suppose she doesn't actually vote very often anyway...

However, The Times reported in 2018 that, in the previous year, Mone had only attended the House of Lords on 12 per cent of the days in which it was sitting, missing important debates, including on the Brexit bill.
Her poor attendance led MSP Rona Mackay to label her the “Layabout Lady of Mayfair” and businessman Douglas Anderson, who had criticised her original appointment, called for her to resign.
By January 2022, Mone had made only five speeches in the House of Lords and asked 22 written questions.

Evening standard article revealing a pretty murky background.

www.standard.co.uk/news/who-is-michelle-mone-tory-peer-received-29-million-ppe-contracts-lingerie-nhs-b1042671.html?amp

Of course the Standard must be quite familiar with Tory Lords, murky dealings and non attendance in HoL.

Another example of favours for mates rather than getting the best people in.

Just watched PMQs.

It's getting very silly now.

But have to say the debates are better and Starmer holds his own better against someone who can actually use language.

Private schools do not help themselves.
The Independent Schools Council peddling nonsense about how 90,000 pupils would move to state schools - no they won't- take a look at the cars on the school car park.
If private schools are so strapped for cash, perhaps they could consider whether they need to build a new swimming pool, theatre, or whatever, and whether the lawns have to be quite so manicured. Many could easily save the amount the VAT on fees would be by not spending money on fripparies not related to education.

I’ve only listened to it but Rishi is starting (!) to really irritate me. He sounds like he’s been on the fringes of the popular group all his life and is revelling in saying things people cheer for. Every thing he says has a ring of ‘did you see what I did then? Aren’t I clever?’. It’s pathetic.
