"Middle class plundered for welfare and pensions"
Heavens.
I'd imagine Braverman, Mogg, etc will be quite happy with that headline.

Seems to be an outlier headline wise tonight...

Notonthestairs · 17/11/2022 23:12

Telegraph talking about the "rhetoric of Osborne and Brown policies" (I don't think they meant that as a compliment) & talks of the Government "shielding benefits claimants & pensioners".
The Times - Years of Tax Pain.
FT - Hunt Paves way for years of pain.

Only the Express seems happy- Victory.

I don't know what I was expecting.

L1ttledrummergirl · 18/11/2022 08:25

Budget announcements always bug me when they switch between percentages and £ when talking about increases.

When putting taxes up they talk about an extra percent or 5, when giving money back they switch to £.

They talked about more money for education and health. My understanding (and please correct me if I'm wrong) is that this years education budget was just over £103b, so the £3b increase is around 3% which is way below inflation so actually in real terms a reduction. The same for health- currently £608b so the £3b extra is actually 1.5% roughly. Again a real terms cut.

Council tax can increase by 5% though which is peachy.

Notonthestairs · 18/11/2022 08:33

Inflation and demographic changes mean NHS actually gets £800 million to improve services.

news.sky.com/story/nhs-spending-inflation-and-demand-growth-to-wipe-out-almost-all-new-funding-12749824

Running to stand still.

DuncinToffee · 18/11/2022 08:43

2% NHS and 4% Education was what I saw mentioned yesterday, so you right with your post drummergirl

It's crumbs they are offering.

InMySpareTime · 18/11/2022 08:57

I noticed they mentioned how much the rise in benefit payments would cost but didn't mention how much the triple lock would cost.

DuncinToffee · 18/11/2022 09:02

In the same way that Hunt mentions benefits fraud and completely ignores business fraud.

How many millions was Sunak happy to write off again?

Benefit claimants are the easy target.
(And it works going by MN threads)

Yes, plenty of bile being spewed at benefit recipients and pensioners. I need to keep off those threads!

IFS Director Paul Johnson lists the "own goals" made by the government over the last decade, which have helped trigger the current crisis.
^^
- Slashing investment spending
- Slashing education spending
- Brexit

I think many of us can relate to this woman's exasperation

#bbcqt audience 1 - When are we going to start talking about rejoining the single market?

Victoria Atkins(Tory MP) embarrasses herself.🤦

#bbcqt audience 2 - I'm not interested in Trading with Australia or NZ.... brexit is a disaster..

Ahhh! I've just finished my latest YouGov survey (seem to be getting them every day atm) . Yesterday was all about the budget etc. Today it was some educational skills thing and a maths section was all percentages! I was a bit 😳😧😵‍💫🥴

But then I got a U in maths o level

*As in asked me to solve some maths questions!!!

Maybe he thinks he's already gained our trust with his transparent, accountable government? Or maybe he actually believes they don't really matter.
The right honorable gentleman seems to have little idea of what any of the words in this post actually mean.

DuncinToffee · 21/11/2022 11:24

CBI conference, Peppa Pig last year, Unicorns this year

Rishi Sunak - "Under my leadership the United Kingdom will not pursue any relationship with Europe.. I believe in brexit... & brexit is already delivering enormous benefits & opportunities... we have proper control of our borders.."

twitter.com/Haggis_UK/status/1594649448155586560?t=62jA2HPDW0oVE4_Icw4AGg&s=19

Come on then Sunak, list those benefits and opportunities!

The first reply to that tweet is saying that a seafood factory in Grimsby is closing thanks to Brexit. How ironic. The fishing industry complained about the EU putting them out of business long before Brexit. Now they've gone out of business after Brexit.

Notonthestairs · 21/11/2022 14:24

A sure sign Sunsk is panicking about bad press - the Mail and Express are beating their chests about a betrayal of Brexit. Perennial victims.

Never mind that a closer relationship with the EU would bolster trade and therefore growth (remember when growth was the most important thing?!)

Notonthestairs · 21/11/2022 14:26

Meanwhile -

BREAK: David Warburton breached MPs Code of Conduct by failing to register £150,000 loan he took from Russian businessman via off-shore trust

MP also breached rules by failing to declare loan when lobbying Financial Conduct Authority for Russian, per Kathryn Stone

twitter.com/gabriel_pogrund/status/1594672579058761728?s=46&t=WicEaa8NEybW1AkdoxPHmQ

Warburton wrote to the FCA saying that Jouvoski was a fit and proper person so he could trade here.
Warburton has said sorry - so that's ok then. He hasn't traded on being an MP at all...

But that's the wrong kind of growth, don't you know!

Notonthestairs · 21/11/2022 15:26

"But that's the wrong kind of growth, don't you know!"

Many a true word spoken in jest. Smile

I listened to the NewsAgents earlier - the normalisation of poverty. Astonishing figures revealing that £ of middle and poorer earners in this UK are so much lower than the equivalent in France.

Deeply depressing and no way out.

DowningStreetParty · 21/11/2022 15:28

So Rishi says it’s a no to Swiss-style Brexit for the UK, that would be too sensible and non-damaging, we need to go harder apparently…

Dougie Sex party Smith is the husband of Munira Mirza who resigned from advising Boris Johnson. I would have thought Rishi would want to move on from Johnson-era policy making, but clearly maybe not?

Notonthestairs · 21/11/2022 16:48

The Impact Assessment for the Retained EU Law Bill obtains the lowest score possible by the Regulatory Policy Committee considering it 'unfit for the purpose'. Again, this is a bad and very poorly prepared piece of legislation. @GeorgePeretzKC @pmdfoster
