Although i did think it would be a stealthily tax like toll roads

I just had a look at the comments on The Telegraph site. Tory voters are incandescent about this fiscal statement. I don’t think it’s achieved quite what Sunak and Hunt were hoping.

Why?
What are they saying?

This is a sample

Utter cowardice from Hunt and Sunak
Path of least resistance to clobber the middle class with massive tax rises
Pathological liars as well-still claim to be a party of low tax🤣🤣🤣🤣
Couldn’t get a Rizla between Tories and Labour now
Tory party no longer has a raison d’etre - off to Reform

That’s just one. There are hundreds in the same vein. Including requests to Hunt’s constituency party to deselect him and observations that he’s signed the Tories’ death warrant.

All the Bad News Jeremy Hunt Hid In his Autumn Statement

The Chancellor's Autumn Statement will go down as one of the most dishonest political statements in living memory

I did think it was a very Labour-esque budget. More about neutralising the electoral threat from labour than actually sorting out any issues

L1ttledrummergirl · 17/11/2022 18:20

A dishonest budget from a dishonest government.
It's depressing. Please, please people, if you have family or friends struggling with money, please, please check on their wellbeing. I have a horrible feeling that the number of suicides and attempted suicides is going to jump.

tobee · 17/11/2022 19:12

These headline figures are not enough to sort out the mess the Tories have created over the past 12 years. It's as simple as that.

Notonthestairs · 17/11/2022 19:36

Whisper it “the chancellor is not being as fiscally tough as he pretends.”

All the nasty stuff happens after 2024/5, in the short term he is borrowing a lot of money to support households + firms in a recession.

Fair enough. Pushing back the “difficult decisions” is …

politically cute. The Tories are not in a great position, at least they get to set the ground rules for the fiscal debate at next general election.

Hunt just manages to get debt:GDP falling in 5 years but debt stock is growing + he’s nowhere near balancing the books.

Yes I agree. Unemployment up. Fuel bills up. Highest tax burden since Ww2. Biggest fall in living standards since 1956 (when records began). Income down to 2013 levels. Social care reform delayed for another 2 years.
14 years of Conservative government.

Wants lower corporation tax.
Wants to look at efficiencies- cuts of 91,000 civil servants.
Wants Supply side reforms and to ditch EU legislation (and replace with????)
Questions why NHS has had more investment & more doctors/nurses it's doing fewer procedures (maybe because private health insurance skim off straightforward procedures and leave complex cases to NHS? Maybe because all costs have increased?)

Does JRM still consider Sunak a socialist I wonder?

Lonelycrab · 17/11/2022 20:16

Utter tosh from Jrm, as per.

Rats in a sack, perpetually fighting, is what we’ve now got. That’s our sad excuse of a government, rattling itself to bits infront of our eyes

I said on the last thread I predicted they'd do that to keep the vote rather than stick with what they believe in or say they believe in.

But they'll still claim Labour would bankrupt us (forgetting they already have)

Notonthestairs · 17/11/2022 20:21

What will Suella, the CSG and ERG say...

The Times reporting Government to drop expectations of reducing migration to 10s of thousands.

"Ministers have shelved plans to significantly reduce migration to the UK in a move that is predicted to raise more than £5 billion for the Treasury in additional taxation.
The Office for Budget Responsibility said that, following consultations with the government, it expected net migration to fall from 224,000 next year to about 205,000 from 2026 onwards. This compared with its previous forecasts of net migration falling to just 130,000 in 2026."

Absolutely.

You have the right wingers wanting to protect the rich and scrap protections and then those who want to remain in power so much they'll say anything.

the80sweregreat · 17/11/2022 20:25

Helping those in most need never goes down well with the likes of Rees Mogg / ERG crowd
I'd love Rachel Reeves to be labour's new leader one day! I'm a big fan of hers

the80sweregreat · 17/11/2022 20:33

It was a surprising budget
After the car crash of Ms Truss / KK , I suppose it had to be the opposite in places
A lot has been hidden away though I'm sure

Absolutely.

She's so clear and concise and has such a calming tone to her voice you can't help but trust not only what she's saying but her integrity

Notonthestairs · 17/11/2022 20:45

I'm not sure it's hidden so much as postponed until after the next election.

"Today the Chancellor announced big public spending cuts... after the next election. The scale of these cuts is huge, and are unlikely to be delivered on the scale envisaged as they would require a big scaling back of how public services are delivered."

I know/hope Johnson is firmly in our rear view mirror but I thought this was interesting. In mid October Johnson went off to the US to give a speech to US insurers and was paid £276,000 and then wafted off on holiday.

But during the same trip Rupert Murdoch flew Johnson to Montana for a "business meeting" with him (and Murdoch paid £11,559.00 for the travel).
