The huge influx of eastern Europeans, stealing all our jobs, was a result of UK government policy not EU freedom of movement. We could have had more control but we chose not to take it. They didn't have the automatic right to freedom of movement, member states could suspend it for the first few years. Most did, the UK didn't. So the majority came to the UK as it was the only state which left the doors wide open. And then we blamed the EU for it.

Piggywaspushed · 14/11/2022 17:00

The Decade in Tory is a really interesting - and horrifying- catalogued reminder of all the lies that were told about Brexit.

No, I don't have shares...and am not Russ Jones either, sadly.

How odd.
All those jobs "stolen" yet HUGE staff shortages in every sector...
Schrodingers immigrant I guess.

Don't forget all the benefits they're claiming whilst stealing our jobs. I suppose it's something for them to do while they clog up A&E.

'I no longer have to lie'

Fmr Environment Sec George Eustice has spoken about the post-Brexit UK/Australia trade deal in the Commons. He says now no longer a minister: "I no longer have to put such a positive gloss on what was agreed...the Australia deal is not actually a very good trade deal for the UK."

@L1ttledrummergirl but everything that was in your post is about what people felt - it was nothing to do with the reality. The evidence showed a completely different story about EU immigration suppressing wages. The evidence showed that EU immigrants are net contributors to the UK economy. But people didn't want evidence, they wanted to keep feeding the xenophobia and British exceptionalism that the likes of the Mail spooned into them every day.

Freedom of movement was always freedom to work - it wasn't the EU's fault that the UK didn't have systems in place to track who was in the country and deport people who were not paying their way. People didn't want to accept that either.

And the whole thing about 'individuality of people' disappearing is just xenophobic bullshit. I have no respect for people who feel that way because there was never any threat to British values, culture and tradition. Again, that was all fed by the right wing press.

I know. But I think that aspect has been ignored and dismissed as unimportant when actually it's the most important thing of all.

I wish I was articulate.

An example: the government are telling us unemployment is at an all-time low so we are all richer as a result. Our lived experiences are saying there are more people on part-time and zero hours contracts, more people using food banks, and people having to set up warm banks. There is a disconnect which causes people to trust their own feelings more.

Anyway, I think I've said more about Brexit today than I ever have, I think now that we need to stop with the polarisation and listen more. I'll step away now.

pointythings · 14/11/2022 18:14

I don't accept that feelings are all important here. I think if you have the privilege of living in a democracy (and lots of people in this world do not have that), then you should feel obliged to bloody well think about what you're doing and not just go with 'the feelz'. That's great if you're 5. Poor if you're an adult.

I got what you were trying to say @L1ttledrummergirl. We do need to look at the drivers for voting Leave or we’ll just stay polarised and never get anywhere with restoring relations with the EU (formally or informally). Because feelings were an important contributor to the result, whether we like it or not,

Shock

former minister admits that members of this cabinet outright lie to appear they’re doing great things…. I’m so nostalgic for the days when politicians relied on clever wording to do that.

Roussette · 14/11/2022 18:38

Some great posts on here particularlyLittledrummergirl and LonelyCrab

The only way some Brexiteers will ever admit it's a mistake is when it hits home to them personally. They got their blue black passports hoorah but next year we need a visa to go to Europe. And longer queues at border controls. Will they ever change their minds, who knows....

I think we forget that although 17M voted to leave, a whopping 16M voted to remain. That figure will be far far higher now.

Feelings stirred up by racist xenophobes of Leave.eu and Vote Leave.

I think these people are scum, but like it or not they ran a very effective campaign that spoke to parts of the electorate. More importantly, they both worked together and shared a platform and had a cohesive message, unlike Stronger In.

Running a negative message campaign was never a good idea when the mouthpieces of it were as unpopular as Cameron and Osborne.

Cameron thought he was another Wilson. If only! Wilson was a consumate, clever politician and decent human being.

Cornettoninja · 14/11/2022 18:41

God knows brexshitters have had years to give us all the sunlit uplands...and yet...(silence)

have you not been treated to ‘stiff upper lip, your grandchildren will reap the benefits’. The die hards seen it have ambitions of being venerated like the world war generations.

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 14/11/2022 18:41

Lonelycrab · 14/11/2022 16:18

Also agree it’s not happening anytime soon. Regardless of any growing support for the idea in this country, they’re not got going to trust us for probably a generation at least. All that childish ukip behaviour at the European Parliament, and the tone and rhetoric in general since the vote. So it wouldn’t even be on the table even if we wanted it to be, I don’t think.

Besides, perhaps an extended spell out in the cold is the only way you’ll really deal with the English exceptionalism that lies at the root of it all.

Agree

Hubris...nemesis...catharthis.

And for what? The Brexshit experiment has failed. Just need politicians who can admit that.

Elodie09 · 14/11/2022 19:16

Has the UK harmed the EU by leaving ?
If we haven't , why would they let us back in and what sort of price would we have to pay to rejoin?
I can't imagine that we would get off lightly.

Fladdermus · 14/11/2022 19:40

The UK leaving has certainly cost the EU, member states, their businesses, their citizens and Brits in the EU a lot of money. We could start with reparations for the damage done.

Notonthestairs · 14/11/2022 19:43

Quote of the day is former environment secretary @MPGeorgeEustice on that acclaimed UK-Australia trade deal

“I no longer have to put such a positive gloss on what was agreed...the Australia deal is not actually a very good trade deal for the UK." 🇬🇧 🇦🇺

twitter.com/pickardje/status/1592240628355981312?s=46&t=OjVTyABMuUJz3gzcWfIvQg

Notonthestairs · 14/11/2022 20:04

Eustice has been very chatty...

"So to recap, (Brexiter) and former cab minister Eustice has

  • said the biggest new non-EU trade deal the UK govt has signed isn't very good (signed by Truss)
-accused Truss of undermining UK national interest for political reasons -said interim Trade Perm Sec should move on."

twitter.com/lewis_goodall/status/1592221369110269952?s=46&t=OjVTyABMuUJz3gzcWfIvQg

Rather begs the question why didn't Eustice speak up at the time.

Elodie09 · 14/11/2022 20:20

@Notonthestairs Exactly. We can see they have been spouting bull, for years, now they are starting to admit it.
I wonder who will be on QT this week after the budget?
There is a tumbleweed response from the audience on QT these days when they start with the, " What we will do is deliver ........." etc etc etc.
They have been delivering austerity for far too long and it sucks.
Enough now.

Cornettoninja · 14/11/2022 20:26

Rishi better acknowledge his mates handiwork in the incurring massive debt we now have in his budget speech.

the80sweregreat · 14/11/2022 20:31

Rishi sunak and Jeremy Hunt will blame the war in Ukraine , the pandemic , global forces and Larry the cat. Everyone and everything apart from anything they did as a government in charge.

Yep.

Whilst trying to pretend the decade before all that happened someone else was in charge - I don't reckon it'll be long before they actually blame Corbyn rather than say "but..... Corbyn".

L1ttledrummergirl · 14/11/2022 20:49

And the current labour leadership for not fixing it for them, despite being the opposition...

Amazing, isn't it?

Tory rule for 12 years and they are still blaming Labour for the countries woes.
