If you were naming children tomorrow, what names would you pick?

Following in from my “how quickly do names come back into fashion”, I thought it would be fun to say what names we would pick, together with our own age, as our own age and peers will have influenced choices.

I am in my fifties. If I was naming babies tomorrow, my girls would be Lydia and Penelope (Penny), and my boys would be Paul and Finn.

Linnet is due a revival I think.

I’ve always liked the name Fabrice, don’t know how that would play over here

NCFT0922 · 06/11/2022 09:53

@midlifecrash Lynette?

Cheeseandlove · 06/11/2022 09:58

Iris and Xander.

Xander was the name we had picked if we had a boy, and Iris goes well with DDs name. I’m 30’s, and grew up with an unusual name and it was a pain so not fussed for having the most unknown obscure name.

@midlifecrash Lynette?

No, Linnet, it’s a kind of bird and the name was popular in the (I think?) 1920s

AmsterdamFleur · 06/11/2022 10:15

Mine would be Anouk and Xander. I’m 45.

Interesting to see Edwin mentioned twice, that’s dh’s name and we haven’t met another one (in UK).

@BiscuitLover3678 My dd is a Beatrix, you don’t hear of many so nice to see her name mentioned.

chisum · 06/11/2022 10:22

50s. I'd love a boy called Michael (influenced by the film Michael with John Travolta)

TicketToRideFan · 06/11/2022 10:40

Interestingly my son’s name has been mentioned a few times, my daughter’s not at all.

I wouldn’t pick my children’s names again - those were my choices in my 20s, fashions and passions change.

@AmsterdamFleur I’ve only ever met one Edwin; he’s in DDS class at school.

TempsPerdu · 06/11/2022 10:58

I’m early 40s. My current picks (disregarding things like having to ‘match’ with DD’s name):

Girls: Frida, Flora, Aster, Cleo

Boys: Rufus, Cassian, Auden, William

@midlifecrash I’ve loved Linnet ever since reading/watching The Children of Green Knowe in the 80s.

Bairnsmum05 · 06/11/2022 11:33

Noor is lovely. I'd go with orlaith, flora, eammon and oisin. Mix of scottish and Irish.
