So what are your energy bills this month?

Gas - £101.61 for using 82 units. Haven’t even put the heating on yet, we do however have a gas hob and I’m assuming hot water?? Have cut down on the DCs baths (twice a week now). But that’s up £40 from last month with a similar usage.

electricity £149.39 this month, up from £88.61 last month but we did use 150kw of energy more (I’m assuming from the heated clothes horse I used in an effort to prevent condensation, won’t be using that again!

we are with octopus on a flexible Tarif.

ouch 😩

£43 Gas and £69 Electricity
Octopus SVR
4 bedroom, 3 storey house
Heating on for hour in morning and couple of hours in evening.

Brigante9 · 01/11/2022 21:28

£150 for gas and electric which frankly amazed me. I didn’t use the tumble drier much, haven’t put on the heating, rarely have a bath.

GreenDanglyearrings · 01/11/2022 21:44

I'm amazed at how little some people are paying..

We are £292 for gas & electricity. I refuse to put the heating on but lots of tumble dryer on the last week due to the rain.

We have a big ish house, 5 people, an electric car and often have Airbnb guests in the annexe.

Electricity - they paid us £88, but £66 of that was the government subsidy. We have quite a lot of solar panels.
No gas.
Haven't put the oil central heating on yet, and also have solar hot water,so no cost for that.
We have used an open fire in the living room about five times, but that is fuelled with foraged wood.

MadameDe · 01/11/2022 22:11

I'm with Shell. Gas and Electricity £69 combined. When my kids are at their dad's, I basically cook one pot meals and have 3 minute showers. Heating is off and I read books rather than having on the telly.

Lattedream · 01/11/2022 22:24

Electric £103
Gas £141
Detached 3 bedroom house
Had heating on maybe 2 times for an hour each time during Oct.
looks like my gas is high considering heating not been on compared to others
With Utility Warehouse

Do you have gas hot water on continuously?

Lattedream · 02/11/2022 07:59

@Athenen0ctua Yes boiler on all time, it’s a combi boiler so hot water always on. We was told best not to turn off and on.

Ours is on for 20 minutes before we get up, plenty for showers for two of us and washing up. Gas was £20 with no heating in October. So I'd guess it's your hot water.

Chasingsquirrels · 02/11/2022 18:11

Combis don't work the same way as system boilers. They are always switched on, but aren't always firing. They only fire up (use fuel) when heat/hot water is called for.

If we have a boiler and a hot water tank heated by gas then what's that called? I can't think of what else would give a £140 gas bill with two hours heating.

TattiePants · 02/11/2022 18:17

October was £63 for gas and £81 electricity before standing charge & VAT. I only know this from my smart meter as Shell have failed to invoice me since fitting the bloody smart meter!

Chasingsquirrels · 02/11/2022 18:20

A system boiler (I think). It isn't a combi anyway.

blebbleb · 02/11/2022 18:20

£119 for electricity and £43 for gas. Glad it's been warm so far and we haven't needed the heating on much.

Looked it up, I think you're right. Though, I'd have thought the combi would be cheaper if no tank, ours holds more water than we use.

dementedpixie · 02/11/2022 19:08

@Athenen0ctua I also have a boiler with a hot water cylinder plus feeder tanks in the loft. My hot water is on for 1 hour per day and that's plenty for us as we have an electric shower and the appliances are cold fill and heat their own water.

What other gas appliances do you have?

dementedpixie · 02/11/2022 19:11

If you're leaving your hot water on all the time then that could account for the higher gas bill. Its cheaper to have it on for a shorter amount of time as it then doesn't heat up sporadically all day

dementedpixie · 02/11/2022 19:13

My gas usage for October cost £87. Heating is on timer but thermostat is at about 16⁰C. Hot water is on 1 hour per day

It was another poster who had a £140 gas bill with heating only on twice for an hour. I don't see how that's possible.

Mine was £20 with hot water tank heated for 20 minutes in the morning, showers are from the hot water tank, gas hob, gas heating (but wasn't on in October). Washing machine is cold fill.

dementedpixie · 02/11/2022 19:30

Ah it was @Lattedream that had hot water on all day, sorry @Athenen0ctua. I wonder if its not actually a combi as you don't turn the water on and off for that.

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/11/2022 19:32

Mine is 8 sept to 8 oct £200

electricty 140 - which was 407 kWh
gas £60 - which was 20 units or 627 Khw

have never worked out diff between units and kWh. Assume one unit is 31 kWh (627/20)

I will post when I get this months bill so 9 oct to 8 Nov to see the difference

heating been on some mornings for 30m to warm house up and odd 39m in even when chilly for dd bedroom

@Mealsonabudget same electricity as us

@Hugasauras you seem high

ParentallyUnprepared · 02/11/2022 19:33

Our bill was £225.

We used £176.

We are £500 in credit.

PottyDottyDotPot · 02/11/2022 19:34

£300 for both, we were paying too little during the previous 6 months as we got an electric car just after the last review. 2 retired people, 2 WFH adults, multiple gadgets, lots of cooking, dishwasher, washing machine, heating on, no tumble drying except in emergencies.
Solar panel dir hot water mainly only works in spring and summer.

I'd have thought a combi would use less if you don't heat a big tank you might not use? I had to look up the difference as we've only lived in one house in the UK, overseas we had a hot water tank heated by electric, no central heating.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 02/11/2022 20:01

£84 electric 249kwh , £32 gas 277 kwh

Used to pay £110 a month for both and build a credit.

Large 4 bed house, but it's only 10 years old so pretty efficient I suppose. Havent started using the tumble drier yet, nor the heating.
