So what are your energy bills this month?

Gas - £101.61 for using 82 units. Haven’t even put the heating on yet, we do however have a gas hob and I’m assuming hot water?? Have cut down on the DCs baths (twice a week now). But that’s up £40 from last month with a similar usage.

electricity £149.39 this month, up from £88.61 last month but we did use 150kw of energy more (I’m assuming from the heated clothes horse I used in an effort to prevent condensation, won’t be using that again!

we are with octopus on a flexible Tarif.

ouch 😩

I don’t understand how the government think that people can afford to be paying £300-£400 per month on energy, long term.

We are paying £300 currently and will be £500 in Jan. It means for us no holidays, very rare takeaways, everything from vinted never new. But at the same time I'm very aware we are in a privileged position and there's lots of folk worse off than us.

Most won't be, the cap will be set at £3000 from April for average usage, so £250 a month, more in winter but it will average out over the year. Many families will get £900 help. So still bad, but not £300-£400 a month for most.

But my family is on a joint income of £41 k per year.
We’re being careful but have young children. We have the heating on a maximum of 17c. And only for a few hours a day.

We’re currently averaging £10 a day on dual fuel. Again I try to be careful.

So that’s obviously £300 a month. I can’t see how we can go on long term. Especially if it goes up in April. Is the £400 discount glint to continue next year?
People are struggling with the help, surely the government can’t let bills go up and then not help? That wouldn’t make sense would it?

What will the government do does anyone think? Maybe give the energy companies loans that they have to pay back? They scrapped that idea though didn’t they ?

Creatingusernamesismygame · 17/12/2022 21:35

£120 and £190 for gas and electricity. With British Gas.

£300 this month, means probably similar in January, likely less in February then March, much less over summer. So yearly usage divided by 12 wouldn't be £300. It's my understanding that those on means tested benefits will get £900 sometime next year.

Athenen0ctua · 17/12/2022 21:49

I'm on £22k so our heating is at 13. Worked out the last 7 days and it's coming to just over £30, so predicting £120 for December. I have a teen, no young children.

Peae · 17/12/2022 22:08

It’s madness that energy is run for profit. We are literally giving money to make foreign investors wealthier, in order to stay warm and fed.

Turefu · 17/12/2022 22:11

All comercial companies have been set up to create a profit and fuel supply companies are not exeption. But they already do make a lot of profit and don't need to keep putting their prices up.

Peae · 17/12/2022 22:16

I know it’s a political position that many disagree with (we have voted in a Tory majority for a start!) but I just think some things should not be run at a profit and that includes heating our homes.

Shortkiwi · 17/12/2022 22:26

Meter readings just taken by DH, - £280 for 20 days - combined electricity/gas with no heating on except on 1 day when elderly patents here, using woodburner in main lounge.
Using airfryer. Very worrying.

Someaddedsugar · 18/12/2022 07:10

In 17 days we've spent £294 if I've done the sums right. And that's only gas. I'm absolutely terrified of the month end usage figures.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/12/2022 08:02

I’m wondering what Xmas day will show on smart meters

people will be cooking /using oven more if entertaining /afford to buy food

plus extra heating on

sure the 25 with be much higher for many

Catlady2021 · 18/12/2022 08:03

Id never thought I’d vote Labour again but we cannot continue like this with this government. Food banks and people freezing in their homes, including working families. We’re a rich country FFS.

NoelNoNoel · 18/12/2022 08:48

The thing is our energy bills always sky rocket during a really cold spell. It will even out. Think of the heatwave weeks when people hardly use any gas and have BBQ’s, salads and picnics etc.
I am sticking to not having a smart meter, I think it would cause me additional stress.

chocolateasaltyballs22 · 18/12/2022 08:56

£217 for both, mid Nov to mid Dec. Heating used very carefully. Wood burner used as well. We are low electricity users, electricity element was £82. Not as bad as I expected.

The oven will make it higher for us, as we never usually cook a whole chicken, normally it's 20 minutes or so when we use it. We will eat leftovers on boxing day though.

FrenchFancie · 18/12/2022 09:06

we pay £70 a month for electric but I am sure they have got that wrong and I’m panicking about being hit by a massive bill.

we have oil fired heating and hot water - I paid £500 for 600 ltrs of oil ten days ago and we’ve used over 100 of those. I’m dreading filling the tank again as it’s so bloody expensive and all in a big chunk.

Daffodilis · 18/12/2022 09:26

Elec 240, gas 120, I did try to be could and use a clothes horse for my drying but it got in the way and took days for anything to dry so went back to using the tumble drier, and started to wash dishes by hand, but got sick of it.

Daffodilis · 18/12/2022 09:28

BTW I have pay as you go for both gas and electricity, I could go on to an ordinary meter but actually like to pay this way even though it's probably dearer.

MyBooksAndMyCats · 18/12/2022 09:29

£160 in gas, £120 in electric but in my defence it's been registering as -8 outside for three weeks! Hoping to get my gas down now it's warming up a bit again but not feeling to hopeful with the school hoildays! Sad

My usage is 3000kwh under average as well!

Turefu · 18/12/2022 09:32

@Daffodilis Do you have gas heating? How warm is your house? I'm on prepayment too, similar electric usage, but more for gas.

Dancingtumbleweed · 18/12/2022 09:59

I am with utility warehouse. My energy (just electric) broadband and phone bill is just one combined bill. Last year it went up from £100 a month to £300. I have just had a review of my account and it is now down to £149 a month.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 18/12/2022 10:15

We're at £155 combined now for the month, with a week still to go so I reckon we'll top £200 for a month for the first time ever.

With the govt help and my DD that is still covered without having to dip into the credit on my acct but it's getting so worrying for everyone.

Hopefully some warmer weather will give everyone some breathing room.

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 18/12/2022 10:17

We're up to £80 this morning, not quite 2/3 of the way through the billing month. We've cut down on showers, lighting and using the oven and hob. Heating is the big thing we've cut down, I can't remember the last time I got a room up to 16 degrees.

We'll spend a bit more with Christmas entertaining as DP tells me I can't expect guests to sit in 12 degree C living room, but we're also out for a couple of days too, so I think we're probably looking at £125/30 for the month.
