Is anyone watching the live news of Sunak going to meet the King? I just wondered who that woman was who was travelling with him and shook the hand of the man at the palace?! It wasn't his wife! The woman who got out the car looked like she was off on her commute or something! Carrying loads of random bags and wearing a puffa jacket!

Well, clearly they don't as Mrs Sunak isn't there (that we know of). Perhaps she is doing something else. Perhaps she's a republican. Perhaps she's just doesn't want to tag along as a spare part and chat to an equerry.

If you are going to query the factual accuracy of a news report, it's really helpful if you state your own facts, instead of missing out the most important one, & presenting a total non-sequiter in the form of "it's not his wife!" without the context you are querying.

I don't find it odd that his wife isn't with him.

Quite possibly her job pays better than his and she is busy or abroad for work that comes first.

I’ve always found it very odd that politicians take their spouses to work as a show of support - very outdated. And there are always more expectations on wives of politicians than husbands.

Very sad for him to go in alone though without his family.

Probably because they had the wit to understand that they wouldn't exactly be occupying the moral high ground with Johnson, of all people, accusing Sunak of having affairs.

What happened to not criticising the appearance of a woman who is not in a public role? She is presumably highly valued by the Prime Minister for her professional skills not her clothing choices.

When people on this thread are working for the PM then they can hand out Westminster-appropriate fashion tips.

I think the main issue here is the BBC getting it wrong and calling someone his wife who is clearly a totally different woman. Do all women look the same?

Not sure about the scruffiness. On the one hand, I am very scruffy and even I would dress more smartly than that to go to Buckingham Palace. But I also agree with the point that she may well have gone 72 hours without sleeping and be focused on the million other things she is dealing with right now that are more important than clothes. She needs an EA asap to deal with this kind of thing for her!

Becoming PM isn't a religious ceremony. It's a job promotion. Spouses have nowt to do with it.

King Charles is 5'10 so wouldn't be towering over him anyway.

I've met Charles a couple of times and was surprised that he looks a lot shorter in real life.

You know what, I'm glad that the new prime minister has someone who looks like a normal middle aged woman on the school run high up in his ranks advising. Makes a change.
