Yes Braverman has shored up her own position. The wingnuts love her.
The only quibble might be if there are more security breaches revealed. Difficult to argue you are the voice of the right if you are risking national security.

@tobee Don’t depress me on this beautiful thundery day 😁 I agree with a lot in that article (angrily agree, but still!) Sunak needs those votes and needs the support of the ERG and CSG to survive.

However, and this is a very tentative “however”, the normally-hardline Jenrick has admitted they need to tone down their rhetoric, and I finally tracked down the Sunak comment:

“Downing Street said the Prime Minister told his Cabinet at a meeting on Tuesday that the UK will “always be a compassionate, welcoming country”,”

I mean, that’s as woolly and meaningless as a comment can get, but it’s hardly doubling down on Braverman’s rhetoric.

More Tory infighting on the way?

Disgusted, but not surprised, to see BBC News at 6pm had the story of Matt Hancock going into the jungle as its main news item this evening. They clearly think that's more important than reporting on the current situation at Manston.

Very conveniently it takes the focus of Cruella.

I can feel (another) complaint to BBC coming on...

Quite why they are advertising on the news a TV show on a different network is a little baffling.

I've just done my YouGov Daily Chat. Bearing in mind all the usual caveats of such self selecting live opinion polls etc, they are usually anti Tory, centrist in the responses from people. However, although most responders don't like Braverman, the ratio is much more right wing on immigration. Hugely depressing. The government look set to run and run with this. Lining up more "bogeymen" to blame for the appalling winter and future we're on course for.

Notonthestairs · 01/11/2022 21:53

Here we go again - I'm sure the OBR will be delighted to read it is at fault not the Treasury. Another attempt to deliberately undermine the OBR.

"Just had a worrying conversation with UK Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch.

I asked whether, given the @OBR_UK's forecast on the impact of Brexit, to grow the economy the government needs to negotiate closer ties with the EU.

She said the OBR’s forecasts were never “quite right”.

twitter.com/lizzzburden/status/1587530197007491075?s=46&t=l9LZrKjIlHxC8ECAGqAsOg

In fact Badenoch is party correct -

The OBR were slightly too optimistic
On the flipside, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), which provides independent forecasts to the Treasury, weren’t pessimistic enough about the effect the referendum on GDP growth.

DowningStreetParty · 01/11/2022 22:15

The self harm of Brexit just goes on and on Sad

Cornettoninja · 02/11/2022 09:01

Wes Streeting on LBC this morning outlining plans to deal with NHS backlogs just played a good superiority hand - he bluntly said he would be delighted for the government to pinch any labour ideas if it meant they were doing something.

L1ttledrummergirl · 02/11/2022 09:21

I'm beginning to think Hancock is taking one for the team.
While everyone is talking about him, the other issues are being swept under the carpet. The media needs to get a grip on what they get obsessed with, they've lifted the pressure off Sunaks decisions.

Andrew Bridgen

Andrew Bridgen(Tory MP/ERG) - "If Suella Braverman was to bring forward a bill where by anybody who enters the country illegally, from a safe 3rd country, is immediately deported... I'm willing to vote for that"

I have seen that being said about Braverman too

It's hard to know isn't it. Is it just nastiness or just incompetence or both?

DuncinToffee · 02/11/2022 10:11

Surprise Halloween Grin

Rishi Sunak says that he will, in fact, attend Cop27 after all. He’d previously said he needed to focus on the Autumn Statement and domestic economy.

I think both mibbe, and they now feel safe enough to show their nasty side openly

So the PM is u turning , just like the one before him.
Matt Hancock is promoting his new book about dyslexia in the jungle.
It's a shame the Education Secretary cant help schools clear the backlog of SEN referrals
Our local school has a three year waiting time for assessments I heard from a TA friend of mine yesterday.
Maybe that might be more helpful than promoting a book if raised awareness of how much that is broken instead

DuncinToffee · 02/11/2022 12:03

Sunak and u-turns

COP is the 3rd Sunak u-turn in 8 days

He reversed his summer campaign position on fracking (previously said 'yes with local consent', then reinstated the ban)

And on EU retained law (previously he vowed a review in first 100 days, now canned

Also

  • plan to charge for missed GP appts
  • promise for a separate energy dept
  • pledge to house asylum seekers on cruise ships

DuncinToffee · 02/11/2022 12:43

Sunak came across as an angry man with his shouting, finger pointing and blaming everything else for Tory failures, and ofcourse but Corbyn made an appearance.

twitter.com/PickardJE/status/1587790868051902466?t=Zy8LvmZtZbLETDd1g937AA&s=19

  • Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson has confirmed that all of his promises from the summer leadership race are now under review
  • pledges are being assessed to check whether they are “deliverable or possible”
  • promises were made when “(financial) context was somewhat different”

this is quite the phrase: “We are committed to the sentiment of them….”

Unfortunately mentioning Corbyn will still hit home for some voters. They haven't got anything else and it's played well for them in the past.

itsgettingweird · 02/11/2022 17:08

Just caught up with PMQs.

Though Starmer was right on the money this week.

Very little language - just pointed questions and excellent responses.

I'm glad he's pointing out they are still blaming Labour when they've been in power for the past 12 years.

L1ttledrummergirl · 02/11/2022 17:09

That was a good question session from Starmer. Now if only the speaker would make Sunak answer the bloody questions.

He comes across as ill informed and difficult to work with when he doesn't even bother listening to what's being asked.

Johnson mark ii but without the charm.

Blossomtoes · 02/11/2022 17:21

The Guardian makes the point we all do here, you know a Tory’s lost the argument when they resort to “But Corbyn…”.

I know ...... "but Corbyn who was leader over a decade ago......".

Nothing to do with the 5 leaders (5?) we've had since then!

Notonthestairs · 02/11/2022 17:26

"Nothing to do with the 5 leaders (5?) we've had since then!"

This is the point that needs to be rammed home. 12 years.
