I don't think there is ever an intention to answer a question from the opposition. Look how differently they treat Conservative questions.

I think Starmer's most interesting question was whether Braverman received legal advice on Manston. Sunak said he couldn't comment on the contents on legal advice - which confirms that there was indeed advice (which was ignored).

Notonthestairs · 02/11/2022 17:36

I've come to the opinion that situation in Manston and the asylum process as a whole is a set up to distract attention from the many other recent messes.

It plays in to whipping up the right in the party and gives them an opportunity to present crap, legally unworkable policies to rally around which they know will never be implemented.

They don't have any successes so they needed to provide the illusion of an enemy.

Exactly. Very easy lever to pull on - or whistle to blow.

Just caught up with PMQs.

Though Starmer was right on the money this week.

Very little language - just pointed questions and excellent responses.

I'm glad he's pointing out they are still blaming Labour when they've been in power for the past 12 years.

Absolutely, the message that they intend to keep to the same path despite the glaring tyre fires they’ve set across the country couldn’t be any clearer.

I’m vaguely surprised that Rishi isn’t making more of ‘getting back on track’ rather than just ignoring the point of how long they’ve been in power. It’s nonsensical in reality but would play well to the headlines.

ClaudineClare · 02/11/2022 20:43

Absolutely.

We've basically been without any form of plan since Johnson resigned in May and now it's getting pushed out further. That's ridiculous. I wonder if they are hoping the twindemic will save them....

Notonthestairs · 02/11/2022 20:58

Well first they have to publicly rubbish the OBR forecast.

Well basically the whole of the 2019 victory was delivering Brexit. Which, I believe, isn't really a thing. I mean we leave the EU and the rest is based on illusions in different peoples' heads. It a massive con. Not in the way that it's a bad thing. It isn't actually a thing.

Similarly is levelling up.

Or else Sunak can't work out what to do because he's in hock to so many sectors of the party who all have different requirements.

We're stuck with populist bullshit that isn't even on a nodding acquaintance with reality.

Which is great when we have a massive crisis ahead of us.

jgw1 · 02/11/2022 22:19

I gather Sunak played But Jeremy Corbyn, did he go all in with Keir's Beer and Boris knows what a woman is as well?

Roussette · 02/11/2022 22:33

Totally agree. Sunak has sold his soul to get to be PM. He's compromised himself greatly with Braverman appointment.

I've watched clips of PMQs. He looked very weak and basically has no answers for anything except Corbyn whataboutery. The back benches were very quiet

I don't think the Government are governing. All the election promises are ditched. They are purely fire fighting and in fighting

^Tory MP Andrew Bridgen set to be suspended from the Commons for 5 days after Standards Cttee found him guilty of breaching rules on paid advocacy, declaration and registration of interests.
Oh, and he questioned the Standards Commissioner's integrity.^

Albania PM

Targeting Albanians (as some shamefully did when fighting for Brexit) as the cause of Britain’s crime and border problems makes for easy rhetoric but ignores hard fact. Repeating the same things and expecting different results is insane (ask Einstein!)

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration of Belize

#Belize is not in negotiations with the #UK or any other country to accept #migrants. We will not agree to accept exported migrants. That is inhumane and contrary to #InternationalLaw.

That's quite strongly worded from Belize.

I wonder if Peru & Paraguay (the other countries we are supposedly in negotiations with) will reply similarly.

Fladdermus · 03/11/2022 11:12

I've noticed a massive increase in 'But Corbyn ...' responses from tories whatever the question asked. It's infuriating.

NEW: Bank of England raises interest rates to 3%- rise of 0.75%, as expected.

Base rate now highest since 2008.

Bank warns that the UK could already be in recession. Normally would be lowering rates to compensate. Instead they're heading up with further to run- welcome to stagflation, folks.

Peston

The really grim news is that the Bank of England expects the UK to be in recession from mid this year all the way through to mid 2024. Dire. And then it expects growth to pick up only to an annualized anaemic rate if 0.75%. Really dire. And like to be made worse by Hunt’s…
contractionary Autumn Statement on 17 November. This is really shocking, especially given the hopes for a post Covid bounce

Governor of the Bank of England: "As we've observed, there has been what I would call a UK premium on rates. Compared to the Euro area and the US, you'll see they've all gone up, but the UK clearly went up far more and it went up during the period when there was turmoil."

I assume BoE reference to UK only turmoil is code for Trussonomics.

Recession til end of 2024 means they'll hold off on an election til January '25.

It won’t make any difference when they hold it now. The effects of recession last long after it’s technically ended. I reckon it will be another five years before confidence starts to return.

AdamRyan · 03/11/2022 14:31

I mean, we were warned that Brexit would take 10-15 years to have any positive effects so any issue with the current climate is just remoaning really
