The saddest songs

After going down a You Tube rabbithole this evening, I've just watched Judi Dench performing Send In The Clowns and I've never felt so desolate. Do you have a sad song that just gets you in the feels? I fear I may never be the same again!

Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now

Fleetwood Mac - Landslide

Prince - Sometimes it snows in April

Anything by The War on Drugs 😭

Lover, you should've come over - Jeff Buckley

ToffeeNotCoffee · 21/10/2022 09:43

There's been mention of a couple of Gilbert O'Sullivan songs which surprised me because I've been listening to him this week.

His song, 'Nothing Rhymes' is not actually sad, but heartfelt never the less.

@Parmesam
I think Harry Chapin is so under rated. What a wonderful songwriter.
He died far too young.
May he rest in peace

Tell Me There's a Heaven by Chris Rea. I just can't listen to this without blubbing.
I was driving when I heard it for the first time - could barely see where I was going.

Inspiral Carpets This is how it feels to be lonely
hits a bit close to the bone…
so many beautiful songs listed , music is amazing

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/10/2022 20:52

Fast Car. Tracey Chapman.
I'll stand by you. The pretenders.
You are beautiful. Christina Aguilera.
Little me. Little Mix. (This song totally relates to the appaulingly shy and nervous teenage self)

Grace - Jim McCann

'Going Over Jordan'. Old folk song sung by many, including Johnny Cash, but my very favourite version was the one sung by the wonderful Veerle Baetens in 'The Broken Circle Breakdown'. That line 'I'm going there to see my Mother, she said she'll meet me when I come' reduces me to red eyes and snot every time.

A PP mentioned Pearl Jam's 'Black'. This has been permanently on my list of top 5 favourite songs ever, and that's a tall order.

Also 'Heroes Never Die', beautiful song by the seriously undersung York band Mostly Autumn. How this incredible group haven't achieved a much broader recognition is beyond me.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 22/10/2022 21:09

Also 'The Doors, 'End of the Night'.

RoachTheHorse · 22/10/2022 21:12

Another for Joni Mitchell, Both Sides Now

Nothing compares to you- obviously

RoseandSadie · 22/10/2022 21:15

Tell Laura I Love Her.
This is how it feels- Inspiral Carpets
I’m sure there’s more, I ‘feel’ music.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 22/10/2022 21:15

I'd forgotten. The song about Jordan is actually called 'Wayfaring Stranger'.

A couple of ours

Everybody hurts - good song about pain
Cats in the cradle - oh's favourite about making time for each other
What a wonderful world - there's always something amazing if you simply look
The living years - don't let things break you up.
Old and wise/time (Alan parsons)

Lots of songs bring out emotion

Someone else who likes the Alan Parsons Project! - I don’t know many people familiar with them. The Same Old Sun is a wonderful evocation of grief, and Shadow of a Lonely Man is also heart wrenching.

Luncheonmeatsandwich · 22/10/2022 21:36

Daniel by Elton John

Howlongtillwegetthere · 22/10/2022 21:37

Wind Beneath My Wings (Bette Midler) - and the film Beaches (in fact I haven't been able to watch it since the first time I saw it as I am afraid I will ball my way through it)

Oh some of these are just all of the feels.

I can't get past the first chorus of "everything I own" by Bread without crying

YES. Bread is amazing. Also their songs Diary and Aubrey really hit hard.

afrikat · 22/10/2022 21:46

Went to see a singer called Camille O Sullivan a few times and she does a cover of Look Mummy, No Hands. Absolutely heart breaking

Also Accidental Babies by Damien Rice. Most songs by DR actually..I love him

Aquamarine1029 · 22/10/2022 21:48

Like A Sad Song by John Denver.

Lndnmummy · 22/10/2022 21:50

Hallelujah by L Cohen- played at my cousin's funeral when he died aged 45.
4 years later it was played again when his wife died of breast cancer at 49. Watching their children in church, for the second time is the most haunting and harrowing experience if my life. I break down every time I think about it.

How long will I love you by Ellie Goulding. It was playing on the radio when my youngest was born by c- section. His birth was such a healing moment for me and Again I start blubbing every time I hear it.

XO by Beyonce when she sang at kobe bryants memorial.

I thought I was Alone in this one x

I waste too much time online but these moments of connection are brilliant

I feel music too, goosebumps and involuntary crying - not convenient whilst driving 🤣
