After going down a You Tube rabbithole this evening, I've just watched Judi Dench performing Send In The Clowns and I've never felt so desolate. Do you have a sad song that just gets you in the feels? I fear I may never be the same again!

There you'll be by Faith Hill. It was playing in the room when my mum was on end of life 😢😢

Daisybuttercup12345 · 20/10/2022 23:06

Honey. Bobby Goldsborough
Ebony eyes. About a plane crash.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 20/10/2022 23:07

Twinkle Twinkle little star.. bedtime song.

I could never listen to the CBeebies bedtime song when my DS was little without 'getting something in my eye'.

Daft, eh?!

Alan Jackson - Remember When

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 20/10/2022 23:09

See also tears in heaven by Eric Clapton. Cannot listen to that without sobbing.

mamabear715 · 20/10/2022 23:13

None.. although my mum died at the end of June & my sis suggested Dusty's 'Goin Back' at the funeral.. nope. Couldn't have handled that.

Fleet Foxes White Winter Hymnal

Nothing's the same by Gary Moore:

Another time, another place.
The lonely streets where we embraced.
Then you would go without a trace.
Nothing's the same without you.
Another day goes passing by.
I sit alone and wonder why.
Sometimes it's hard, but I will try
to live my life without you.
You're in my heart, you're in my dreams.
You're everywhere or so it seems.
So many times I've heard that song.
Hold back the tears, pretend you're strong.
Another day goes slowly by.
I sit alone and wonder why.
I think of you, I start to cry.
Nothing's the same without you.
Another time, another place.
The sweetness of our last embrace.
What would I give to see your face.
Nothing's the same without you.
Nothing's the same,
nothing's the same,
nothing's the same without you.

Blue eyes crying in the rain - UB40 version,
and
Those were the days of our lives By Queen when Freddie whispers " I still love you" breaks my heart. Also Love of my Life by Queen. So simple and poignant.

Nothing Compares to You.....Sinead O'Connor. A few weeks after the breakdown of my marriage I was at the hairdressers , trying to give myself a boost. This came on the radio and I sat howling like a banshee....tears, snot and hair sticking to my face. I still can't listen to it and that was 26 years ago!

Bepeaceful · 20/10/2022 23:29

fields of gold - Eva Cassidy

womens work - Kate bush

both songs were used on cancer fundraising adverts when my aunt was dying of cancer 20 years ago. I feel like I’m back at that painful time all over again when I hear the songs.

ParkheadParadise · 20/10/2022 23:35

To where you are

Fly me up to where you are
Beyond the distant star
I wish upon tonight
To see you smile
If only for a while
To know you're there
A breath away's not far to where you are.
💔💔💔

FASDE1517 · 20/10/2022 23:35

I Wasn't Expecting That makes me bawl!
And Adele- Go Easy On Me. The saddest day of my career involved some lovely children singing this and I fell apart. Can't listen to it now.

1994girl · 20/10/2022 23:39

Fix you by Coldplay

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 20/10/2022 23:42

"Our farewell" by Within temptation.
If you read the lyrics it's between a child and mother going back and forth a verse at a time

Smokeybacon72 · 20/10/2022 23:50

Beloved wife by Natalie Merchant

Smallorangecat · 20/10/2022 23:55

A Wave Across the Bay - Frank Turner. I saw him live a few weeks ago and cried in a crowded room. I have no idea how he gets up every night of the tour and sings this song about his friend.
Poke - Frightened Rabbit. Just about any Frightened Rabbit song, but especially this one.
Folding Stars. - Biffy Clyro
Things My Father Said. - Black Stone Cherry
The Night Will Always Win. - Elbow (I discovered this song from one of these MN threads about sad songs a few years ago)
Into My Arms. - Nick Cave
For Good from the musical Wicked
Fall To Pieces. - Velvet Revolver
Someone You Loved. - Lewis Capaldi

Add in songs from the funeral and our wedding and this is basically the soundtrack to my grief

oldperson1 · 20/10/2022 23:58

He ain’t Heavy Hollies
The Living Years Mike and the Mechanics
Dance with my Father ?

Separate Ways, Elvis
it was the day after my Ex and I had decided to split. Our daughter was just over a year old. I was at my mums and she was listening to Capital Gold. I had my daughter in my arms when this song came on and broke me.

my Immortal, Evanescence

the Drugs Don’t Work, The Verve

Dance with my father again

unchained Melody, Righteous Brothers

Everybody Hurts, REM

LargeglassofRosePlease · 21/10/2022 06:35

Yellow coldplay
Chasing cars Snow Patrol

I love those songs but they always make cry

Parmesam · 21/10/2022 06:47

Has Cats In The Cradle by Harry Chapin been mentioned? That always depresses DH.

The thing with music streaming us, you find songs from your younger days and get re-familiarised with them. My current saddest song from my youth is A Little Time by The Beautiful South. Ir's about the demise of a (possibly very toxic) relationship. TBS have some great songs though.

I also get very sad listening to Alone by Rag 'n' Bone Man. Rory's voice is amazing anyway, but this song reminded me of feeling very alone, even whilst surrounded by people.

Chanel05 · 21/10/2022 06:59

Tears in Heaven. Played it a lot in the hours / days after the death of my beloved nan
