We haven't here.
It still doesn't feel cold enough in the house for me. Although ours neighbours is on (which probably keeps us warmer).

Not yet - West Mids 4/5 bed semi.
We both wfh and the house ranges from 16-19 degrees in the day time.

Wonder if we can make it to November?

AriettyHomily · 18/10/2022 23:42

We had it in last night for a couple of hours. Had to turn it off and open the windows. Not cold enough here yet. SE. Was on the beach today and plenty of people sunbathing in shelter from the wind.

Semi detached old cottage with draughty windows, storage heaters and no fixed heaters in hall or DDs room. Oil filled mini heater on in DDs room for a couple of hours around bedtime to bring it up from 15.4c to around 18c, otherwise it would get very cold overnight. Convection heater in the kitchen has been used for half an hour first thing in the morning/while eating on a few days when it has actually felt damp in there. Open fire in living room most evenings from around 7pm, but stop adding fuel by 9pm as it stops whole house feeling damp. Storage heater in living room will be on tonight and tomorrow night as we are going away and my neighbour who is feeding the cat will worry he is cold if I don’t provide him with some heat. Hot water bottle and winter duvet, but no heating in my bedroom.

mindutopia · 19/10/2022 00:09

No heating on here. Not even close yet. We live in a detached farmhouse in a windy rural area. We have put the wood burner on once or twice for atmosphere, but I can’t see putting heating on yet for weeks still.

HighlandPony · 19/10/2022 00:14

Nah. I don’t normally bother putting mine on. I’m native. I’m built for this

WahineToa · 19/10/2022 08:24

Do some people really not cope inside if it’s under 18deg?? I wouldn’t put any heating on if it’s 15deg.

thelobsterquadrille · 19/10/2022 09:08

We haven't, and it was six degrees outside at 8am yesterday.

Our house currently reads 16.5. It's chilly but not freezing. I'm wearing leggings, a vest top, a cotton jumper and socks, plus a dog for added heat Grin

thelobsterquadrille · 19/10/2022 09:10

Oh, and we're in a 1920's terrace in Cumbria - we're hardy up here by the coast Wink

ApolloandDaphne · 19/10/2022 09:14

We have a very cold house. We are away at the moment and the heating is off. I can see on Hive the internal temp has dropped to 13 degrees. That is too cold for comfort so I feel happy with my decision to have the heating on for an hours or so morning and evening when we are at home.

WireSkills · 19/10/2022 10:44

I suspect DH had a sneaky heating session when I was at work yesterday. £2.20 on the Smart meter on Monday, £3.50 yesterday! Will let him off though as it's hardly the £6.85 the "average" £2,500 household should be paying over the course of the year.

Scoundrella · 19/10/2022 10:46

No heating here! House is a Victorian end terrace but consistently around 18c throughout the house at the moment which would be windows open fan on summer weather! Heating is set to come on at 15 so doing we’ll need it any time
soon

Marcipex · 19/10/2022 10:47

Not yet, but I have to run the dehumidifier.

Is this going to be the new LTB-worthy crime on MN now? Forget cheating or escorts or gambling - it'll be sneaky heating sessions 😂

MavisChunch29 · 19/10/2022 10:49

Not much, the thermostat is set at 17C and the heating to come on for two hours in the morning - think it may have once when it had been 6C overnight. In the last couple of weeks even the nights have been mild, still 11C when I wake up at 6am. It doesn't really go below 20C in the daytime indoors with no heating and I haven't felt cold at night either.

I would struggle though working in 18C or less, sitting down. I'd go and put my big poncho on first though and have a hot drink.

ancienthouse · 19/10/2022 10:49

I live in an ancient house which has the worst heat retention known to man. The heating is on with the thermostat set to 17, and it's kicked in most mornings and evenings.

I don't cope at all.

I have arthritis. And physical disabilities. If I get cold it makes me upset and cry I can't cope at all. I try to layer up but I'm in my study at the moment in fleece lined leggings, vest, long sleeve fine top, jumper and oodie and my hands are freezing so I've just put the heating on for an hour in here (all the other radiators are off)

If I didn't put the heating on I wouldn't be able to concentrate to work I'd feel sore and achy and that makes me anxious as well.

RamblingEclectic · 19/10/2022 10:52

Not yet, but I'm in the East Midlands where it's really only been what I'd consider cold for the last couple of days, and I'm the most sensitive to cold in my family.

We only had our first 'we may need it soon for the house' yesterday, though I've been debating things like electric blankets and such for this winter for me on days I can't move much.

Yes! My heating has been on this morning to bring it up to 20 degrees and already it's dropped to 18.3. I'm WFH wearing a fleece and i've just put a blanket over my legs but I can feel the Reynauds starting in my feet. It would be fine if i was moving around and doing housework etc but stuck at desk it's cold.

80sMum · 19/10/2022 11:01

We don't usually put the central heating on until the outside temperature falls below zero (Celsius, that is, not Fahrenheit!). Then, we might run the CH for about an hour in the mornings to take the initial chill off the house.

However, we usually light the woodburner in the evenings if the internal temperature is below 18. It quickly raises the temperature in the living room to a toasty 24!

WahineToa · 19/10/2022 11:41

I can understand conditions that are made worse by the cold. But otherwise I think it’s part of the problem, people think they need heating on all the time. I’m from a country without central heating and houses made from timber, we don’t have heating on if it’s below 18, it needs to be really cold. When I lived on a mountain range we had a wood burner that went on first thing for really cold mornings.

rainbowandglitter · 19/10/2022 11:42

We've not had the heating on or come anywhere close to needing it.

SueGray · 19/10/2022 12:03

I’d set myself a target of not putting the heating on until half term. Fortunately the weather has been very kind to us and we might get to November without it!!! It feels like a challenge now!

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 19/10/2022 12:10

We haven't gone below 19 yet, so no heating. Thermostat is usually set to 18. Hoping to keep it off for the next few week as we're getting a new boiler installed then if all goes according to plan.

Chouxd · 20/10/2022 10:17

I haven't turned on the heating either. We live in a 4-bed terraced house in Yorkshire, the indoor temperature has remained 17 to 18 degrees so far.

CallMeBubbleDarling · 20/10/2022 10:28

We are in a farm cottage on top of a hill and we will probably have to put the heating on in November. We have the log burner going to take the chill off and lots of extra layers. We’ve been lucky with the weather so far but a few more degrees and we will start to feel it
