Anyone else still not put the heating on?

We haven't here.
It still doesn't feel cold enough in the house for me. Although ours neighbours is on (which probably keeps us warmer).

We are in the south west so warmed by the gulf stream. It's not cold enough for heating yet. Obviously it's chilly outside at night but it gets up to 18 or so in the day, and the sunshine still warms the house up nicely most days. Without any central heating the sources of heat in the house are our own bodies and waste heat from cooking, fridge freezer and washing and the ambient temperature indoors this morning is 19.5. We have good insulation mostly though there are a few places where it could be improved.

WhatHoJeeves · 18/10/2022 09:04

Fortunately it's mild here at the moment and when we've had cold evenings we've had the log burner going, which warms a few rooms. We can't use our central heating as we can't afford oil. We have enough oil for heating the water through the winter if we're sparing, but not enough to have the heating on. Never been in that situation before.

viques · 18/10/2022 09:05

Heating not on here, though when I changed the bed linen at the weekend the duvet was put back in the duvet cover after its summer holiday in a storage bag , and I did put an oil filled radiator on for a couple of hours when a friend came round (not wearing a jumper) and said they were chilly.

Livebythecoast · 18/10/2022 09:07

No, not cold enough yet - on the SE coast. Have bought Kuddly's for when it gets too chilly so hoping to hold out as long as possible 🥶

BooksAndHooks · 18/10/2022 09:08

Still 20 in our house and bedroom windows still open as it’s hot upstairs.

I don’t usually put it on in October but will only be putting it on sporadically this year. The days of being able to have it set to kick in at 20 are long gone.

LadyHelenaJustina · 18/10/2022 09:16

Still quite mild here. I’ve lit the log burner a few times with small twigs, just to take the edge off in the evenings.

wheresmymojo · 18/10/2022 09:18

We also live in a new build in the SE.

Inside temperature hasn't gone below 20.8 on our thermostat yet!

I think the hot summer means that the structure of the building has a lot of heat retained in it and it also hasn't got that cold here yet.

It does seem to be holding up particularly well this year as we've been here for nearly five years and have definitely needed the heating on before November in other years.

I started to feel a tiny bit cold the other day (still saying 20.8 mind) so decided to do some painting and decorating and was soon sweating!

wheresmymojo · 18/10/2022 09:20

As a comparison my in laws live 5 mins down the road in a large older house and they were down to 13 degrees in one of the hallways without a radiator...goes to show how amazing the insulation is.

They're moving to a new build in a couple of weeks and we were joking that they'd be in shorts and t-shirts given how warm it will be compared to their current house.

Dreamstate · 18/10/2022 09:22

No need yet, was tempted one night but took myself off to the gym instead

Blocked · 18/10/2022 09:22

I cracked last week and now we've been warm again we feel the need to keep putting it on. It was 3°C outside this morning where I live though.

wheresmymojo · 18/10/2022 09:24

Vapeyvapevape · 18/10/2022 08:41

We normally have the house way too hot in the winter with the heating wacked up to 26 sometimes 28. I'm holding out and tbh I quite like it colder, it means I get ready quicker in the morning 😀

I thought I was bad whacking it up to 22 😂

Surely that was basically like living in a greenhouse?

Mummyboy1 · 18/10/2022 09:24

Not yet. Definitely feel the coldness in the morning but it soon warms up. I just put a dressing gown on me and my baby, and have bought him a warmer sleeping bag.

Comedycook · 18/10/2022 09:26

Yikes. My sil does this. Heating always on and cranked up. It's unbearable

Solosunrise · 18/10/2022 09:28

It was 7c outside when i left for work and my thermostat inside said it was 19c. I live in a terraced house and we have our windows open most of the time too. So we are fortunate to have had no need.
Obviously I'll close the windows when the time comes to need heating. Never have heat on overnight or in my bedroom. I like warm bed/cold room for sleeping.

KarenPirie72 · 18/10/2022 09:29

Not had it on every day but have put it on for the odd hour at night and first thing in the morning, mainly because we don't want the house getting damp. We live in an old, converted Victorian semi.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 18/10/2022 09:32

I've had mine on two or three times but only one or two radiators at a time and only for an hour. I am definitely adapting to the cold, though! When the temperature dropped below 18 a month ago I felt icy after the hot summer, but now it's been 16 degrees in most of the house for the last fortnight and I've stopped feeling it nearly so much. I'm in Scotland (south east) and it's currently 5 degrees outside and 15 in here. I'm watching the kids - if I'm cold and they aren't then it's usually just because I've been sitting still at my desk for too long, rather than being actually cold.

I wonder how much energy we have collectively saved compared with last October? Every single person I know is refusing to put the heating on as much as they possibly can - I imagine that on a national basis that really adds up.

champagneplanet · 18/10/2022 09:34

Been putting ours on first thing in the morning for not even an hour, just while we get up and ready since the beginning of last week. I've been telling everyone to wear a jumper/dressing gown if they're a bit cold of an evening and so far it's been fine.

Lyndsb · 18/10/2022 09:41

I have put it on three times (usually at 7pm) for an hour. Beforehand I would have just put it on because it's October. I make sure we are appropriately dressed and not in shorts, t-shirt and barefoot ( teenagers).

northerncrumpet · 18/10/2022 09:48

2 degrees here this morning, house was bearable but will be lighting the stove later!

Mabelface · 18/10/2022 09:54

Mine's not on yet. North Derbyshire. It's 17° in my office during the day, so use a heated throw. Evenings are spent with fluffy blankets and a fake oodie. Plenty warm enough so far!

FreezyFreezy · 18/10/2022 09:55

We haven't because it's not cold enough. The coldest it's been in our house so far was 17°C a few weeks ago. It's hovering at around 19°C at the moment.

BlackeyedSusan · 18/10/2022 09:58

No. Ours doesn't work so use oil filled radiators when required but have not plugged them in yet. Our flat is really warm. Unlike my mum's house which is bloody freezing in August.

Siouxtse1 · 18/10/2022 10:00

Put it on for two hours in the evening a few nights ago. Not had it on since though. Currently about 8 degrees outside and rather foggy. We are surrounded by fields and I can't order any lpg at the moment as we have to wait until there's less than 30% in the tank...

WahineToa · 18/10/2022 10:01

Not yet, in Peak District. It’s cold and we would normally but we’re on oil so there’s no chance until it’s unbearable

SwordToFlamethrower · 18/10/2022 10:02

No, I need the windows open at night because it gets too bloody hot!
