DH has just smashed every single glass we own

... bar the handful that were in the dishwasher.

He was doing some DIY in the kitchen and (don't ask me how) unscrewed the wall mounted kitchen cabinet which holds all of our glasses, including our wedding Waterford Crystal. I wasn't at home at the time but apparently the noise and mess was epic.

No reason for the thread except to to mourn the loss of my lovely crystal wine goblets...

I still remember the Changing Rooms programme with Linda Barker when a lady lost all her teapots which came crashing down after an ‘inspired’ installation.
I imagine you felt like she did and I believe still does!

sueelleker · 14/10/2022 17:16

They're lovely!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 14/10/2022 17:19

I actually gasped out loud at this.

AdoraBell · 14/10/2022 17:20

FiveShelties · 14/10/2022 11:30

Could be worse, they could have been full wine glasses.

A MNer after my own heart 😀

mrsbyers · 14/10/2022 17:41

When we moved into our new build hubby put up some extra cupboards in the utility , merrily filled them with tins of stuff , cleaning materials etc - all good

Two days later they crashed down

LookItsMeAgain · 14/10/2022 17:44

These are the wine glasses I'd get:

Oh no! I assume he's OK? Could have been nasty.

Thank you yes, he's fine. He got a hell of a shock.

My uncle dropped every plate from my mum's new crockery set when washing up. We'd only had them about a week and was the first time we'd had a matching set. We never got matching things so it was a big thing.
I remember his face as he hopefully said, "one isn't broken" and picked up our only plastic plate.

Looking back it was quite funny, but I don't think my mum thought that at the time, even while she was assuring him it didn't matter.

NotMeNoNo · 14/10/2022 17:56

Ahh, my gran once tried to move her sideboard, the leg of it broke and nearlly all her china and glass with it. Just one of those things of life!

DillDanding · 14/10/2022 18:09

We have lovely Ver Wang champagne flutes. We had 6, we now have 3. All 3 perished at the hands of careless guests.

They now only come out at Christmas and birthdays and I’m like Hyacinth Bucket and her neighbour with anyone that drinks from them.

Just rewatched that.

Ah that is annoying.

I was worried he'd flung them at the wall during a blazing row and I was scurrying on to tell you to get rid of him.

Sadly with an accident you have to out on a tight smile and accept that these things happen. Bloody annoying though!

I was expecting glasses smashed in a rage too.

Tessabelle74 · 15/10/2022 17:51

Did he shout "Brace yourself Rodney!" whilst unscrewing the fixings? If not DTB! 😂

This is exactly what I thought the post was gonna say! 😱 glad it’s not though! Although I’d be raging even though it was an accident- especially the lovely wedding gifts- but I’m maybe over sentimental lol xx

akindredspirit · 15/10/2022 18:29

Sorry to hear this. I have loads of beautiful cut glass as I inherited my grandmother's and my parent's collections. I love it and though it is very expensive still in shops, it sells for next to nothing in auctions and on Ebay. I needed to replace a broken Waterford whisky glass and some Stuart crystal, and managed to match very reasonably on Ebay. Worth a look!

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 15/10/2022 18:30

If you are thinking of claiming on insurance replacing the Waterford Glass, look at Tipperary Crystal which was set up by former workers from Waterford Glass.

Brigante9 · 15/10/2022 18:37

I’d be devastated to lose my stained glass wineglasses. My mum’s friend broke one when we were abroad and mum was house sitting (for her benefit, not ours, they moved away from an area all their friends live in and we now live nearby). I haven’t found similar over the years.

Bernardo1 · 15/10/2022 19:01

Surely any reasonably intelligent person would empty the cupboard before hand. Washing the glasses, careful by hand and putting back when the job completed.

Katekeeprunning · 15/10/2022 19:20

🤣🤣

NonGardener · 15/10/2022 19:24

Write down an accurate list of everything that you have lost, and then check your home insurance for accidental damage cover. You won't be able to recover the sentimental/emotional value but it might be possible to replace the most important items.

ListenLinda · 15/10/2022 19:29

Oh gosh OP!

Did he not think to take the glasses out of the cupboard first?
I wouldn’t know whether to swear at him, laugh or cry! 😂

Gingernan · 15/10/2022 19:30

Oh gosh,I'm imagining the mess, quite scary,I hate broken glass...what a shame!
I can't talk I broke every bit of our dinner service, bought bit by bit from a pottery in the year before our wedding,it was really heavy stuff and seemed to dive off the draining board when I was washing up...I'm acciden t prone.

Lopoem · 15/10/2022 20:38

Sorry about your glasses Op.

When I was 2 my Mum in her wisdom kept mine and my older sister's craft glitter in the drinks cabinet (out of reach). It was one with the fold down flaps. I climbed up and along the fold down flap to get to it. The whole cabinet toppled on top of me. My Mum heard an almighty crash followed by my sister's scream. My Mum's very petite and struggled to lift the cabinet, so somehow had to drag me out (Dad was at work). I still remember looking down and realising I was covered in lots of tiny cuts and scratches. I was very lucky that was the worst of it though. Every single drinks bottle and glass (including wedding presents) was smashed!
