DH has just smashed every single glass we own

... bar the handful that were in the dishwasher.

He was doing some DIY in the kitchen and (don't ask me how) unscrewed the wall mounted kitchen cabinet which holds all of our glasses, including our wedding Waterford Crystal. I wasn't at home at the time but apparently the noise and mess was epic.

No reason for the thread except to to mourn the loss of my lovely crystal wine goblets...

I remember someone telling me about their husband putting cut glass crystal glasses in the dishwasher and ruin them. Apparently they thought it would be a good idea to try again with the same glasses because what happened shouldn't of happened. Funnily enough it happened again.

He is excellent at DIY but occasionally slapdash. He has no one else to blame because he installed the kitchen himself 12 years ago, and cant believe he installed a wall mounted cupboard only held up by two screws.

Yes, tight smile, "it's only stuff", wine tonight (out of coffee cups).

My sister had her kitchen redone and one wall cupboard held all her wedding good make crockery. The cupboard was also only held with two screws.....all smashed :(

Things like this always remind me of the Changing rooms episode with the persons whole teapot collection on some hanging scaffold shelves. I think one survived

Once you've got over the shock then hope you can enjoy shopping for some new glassware. Is it something that is covered by household insurance?

Your DH isn't Kwasi Kwarteng by any chance?
I believe he might be a bit miffed and lashing out at things today.

I reckon he is dancing for joy at his lucky escape.

lissie123 · 14/10/2022 15:07

This happened to me too. Painter was refreshing our kitchen cabinets. Somehow the shelves in the cabinet holding all my very expensive champagne flutes dislodged and all the glasses were smashed. I bought very cheap champagne glasses to replace them.

This might make you feel better - the infamous episode of Changing Rooms where Linda Barker’s stupid floating shelf destroyed six grand’s worth of antique teapots, collected over a lifetime:

Just thinking about it now - the owner of those teapots could probably bring them to The Repair Shop and get them repaired and appear on a second TV show 😄

bigbluebus · 14/10/2022 15:09

DH somehow managed to knock all our cereal bowls out of the cupboard the other week. We have 1 left as it was in the dishwasher. I had to have toast instead of porridge for breakfast the following day as he got to the only cereal bowl first!

Yes. The one I expected to read would have been a lot worse so at least there's that, eh OP?

I don't think women should be grateful that their husbands smashed glasses by mistake rather than in anger. seems a low bar.

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/10/2022 11:33

He owes you a crate of wine now.

And perhaps one for himself too! The shock of it all crashing down would have been something - I'd certainly need a stiff drink!

Joystir59 · 14/10/2022 15:37

Thats a shame, and I'm very clumsy so only have cheap glasses from Wilko

Glitterspy · 14/10/2022 15:44

Soo much sympathy OP, my husband is shit at DIY as well.

HazelBite · 14/10/2022 15:51

I would think the Waterford would be covered by your insurance, its mega pricey to replace. The wine glasses I bought in the 1990's cost approx £35 per glass!

StrangeLookingParasite · 14/10/2022 15:54

Riedel is nice.

Jesus christ it wasn't a deep comment, the thread is quite lighthearted ffs

Laughed out loud!

WhackingPhoenix · 14/10/2022 16:03

Oops! Grin

I was out for breakfast with DP once and the poor waiter tripped as he was carrying two FULL double-stacked dishwasher trays of glasses; the whole lot smashed all over the cafe and went all over us and our food! Thankfully, nobody was hurt (apart from the waiter’s ego) but we did get another breakfast and they wiped our bill 😂 we did leave him a tip though because we felt so sorry for him!

crazeelala2u · 14/10/2022 16:07

FiveShelties · 14/10/2022 11:30

Could be worse, they could have been full wine glasses.

This is just not something one should joke about!

Hahahaha

ChickenRat · 14/10/2022 16:10

Something very similar once happened to me. We had cupboards with that types of shelves that sort of balance rather than being screwed in or whatever. The washing machine was in the cupboard under the wine glass cupboard and one day the vibration from the spin cycle caused all of our glassware to fall on my head. A lot of things were broken.

While I was attempting to deal with the chaos, the cat chose this moment to bring in a dead mouse and leave it in the kitchen.

I was getting increasingly flustered so called DH to tell him what happened. As I was talking to him I sort of ran my fingers through my hair and found a shard of glass in my scalp.

This prompted me to tell DH "sorry I'll have to remove the glass from my head before I dispose of the body" which I still come out with when busy and overwhelmed

Much sympathy! I'm very attached to some of our glasses including some antique crystal champagne coupes that would be impossible to replace.

There are some lovely glasses on offer from Galway Crystal. I'm tempted by a few of them.

Thank you - I have just ordered their Erne glasses (4 each of wine, champagne, high ball & mixer) absolute bargain at £80 for the lot!

Oh OP you will definitely need fancy new wine glasses & some fabulous wine to put in them.

temporarysecrettellingnamechange · 14/10/2022 16:26

Ah that's annoying. I have one Tiffany wedding glass left. It's lovely, no one is allowed near it.

Slightlydustcovered · 14/10/2022 16:36

Last week my husband managed to drop the bottle stopper ( large heavy thing) in to the middle of the stack of pyrex, given to me when I moved out of home by my late grandmother. Not valuable but sentimental, she had had them for years. It smashed every one, 5 in total. Although all the shattered glass was contained in the draw so cleaning up wasn't to bad. I still haven't replaced them and keep going to grab one before realising it's not there. Lucky I really like him!

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 14/10/2022 16:57

retro pyrex is easy to find in charity shops and ebay

ScribblingPixie · 14/10/2022 17:06

I once went to a beautiful old bar probably 19th century somewhere in Scandinavia that I'd read about in a guidebook. It had a whole wall entirely shelved with all these amazing liqueurs, beautiful glasses, special bottles of wine - a total work of art & a collection that had been built up over years and years. As we walked in and we were saying 'Wow, what an incredible place,' the entire thing just collapsed, the whole wall-full just fell and totally smashed. It was so loud and so stunning. I haven't thought about that in years. Enjoy your mugs of wine tonight, OP!

bingbummy · 14/10/2022 17:11

Men don't belong in the kitchen.

DillDanding · 14/10/2022 17:15

Men don't belong in the kitchen.

sexist much?

I barely know my way to the kitchen. It’s my husband’s domain.

ShowOfHands · 14/10/2022 17:16

My Mum's cupboard fell off the wall (had been there 25yrs) and landed on her head. She lost her wedding presents, her granny's china and sustained a horrendous concussion.
